I've owned 3 mk1s and 2 mk2s. One turbo one NA
I loved them all
But this is /o/ so everyone will tell you they suck. AMA

How reliable where they? Did you have to do much work?

My mk1s all had over 200k. One had over 300k miles.
Mk1 is easy to service. I never had to replace anything other than an alternator.
Mk2s are a bit more difficult but not bad if you're patient. Had to replace a turbo and clutch.
The NA never needed anything but it burned a small amount of oil.

not him but literally everything besides the fact that it's a toyota and it's mid engined. mk1 lightweight and low powered, agile go-kart with a car body. mk2 a bit heavier, more of a car (easier to live with), but got that boost (don't buy an na mr2 unless it's the japanese spec one (trust me on this really don't do it))

Mk1 is more basic. Sucks on the freeway. Twitchy all over the place. And slow as fug.
Mk2 is a comfy freeway cruiser. Especially the turbo with dem awesome leather seats. Far less twitchy. Feels more stable unless you royaly fuck the suspension settings.
Idk. Both have their pros and cons.

All 3 of them were twitchy.
Two were stock with stock alignments.
One was tokico adjustable, ST springs, TRD alignment settings.

Two mk1s had glass moonroof. (No issue)
One was hard top. (Awesome)
Turbo was T-top (leaked)
NA was glass. (Cracked but no leak)
I prefer hard top.
