That's because a whole load of factory 2.0-2.5L engines can do 450 flywheel hp. It's usually some stuff in the heads like valves, cams, etc. but the internals can be stock on with modern fuel injection and ignition.

How is that a power-related failure? That's usually your cam timing gone wrong, usually with a broken timing belt.

Rods mostly fail after increasing RPM. Adding a turbo doesn't increase RPM (they actually pull the power band down a bit), thereffore is makes the rod unlikely to fail as a stress component.
What can happen however, is incorrect tuning. Premature detonation causes severe stress loading on the conrods, and heavy thermal (and stress) loads on the pistons. Basically, just don't make it knock - which you can with modern ignition and injection tuners, and with modern knock sensors.
Stock internals have been becoming stronger and stronger since the 90's. We live in a world where small-bore LS's can hold upwards of 700hp. CA18's can push 500hp with a good set of cams, studs and gaskets, on their stock bottom end. 4G63's go up to about 450, but rod bolts should be replaced with studs after that. Most of these examples lack fuel to go there though, so you always need to upgrade injectors. If you don't, well, expect lean running and a whole boat of problems. If you do, 450hp on a 4cyl doesn't have to be a problem.

People run high boost 6 bolts for tens of thousands of miles, 350+ whp without an issue retard.
Saab b205/7's are good for ~350-400 bhp as well.
Chevy l61's are regularly put to over 250 bhp with literally a turbo/tune.
Honda k's can handle 400 with a turbo/meth or nitrous.
Yota 1zz's, even with the oil burning issue, can make 300bhp without a sweat.
