I never even considered looking at one let alone buying one, but every car that goes up against it for the same price, can't compete in any way.

At 60kaud drive away, I'm seriously considering it. Anyone own one of these and can talk a bit about it?

Finance is over 6 years, 5.5% nothing down

That or the Focus RS are your best options in that price range, though you can get the R now and you'll have to wait for the RS (if it's coming to Australia).

Haldex "AWD"

Otherwise. I've read it's kind of boring. Most reviews conclude with "get the GTI and buy yourself a motorcycle with the extra money." or thereabouts. Say dynamically the GTI is more fun.
>>
>>14804509

funny you mention that because I'm in the market for a bike too

That looks hideous even for modern car standards. And I won't even start on how it doesn't benefit performance at all. Engineers must be ripping their hair out because of the marketing department.

Get the GTI.

Just don't do it. I live in Australia too and have a friend who bought an R. His has had about 4 different stupid electrical faults in the first 3 months and on one occasion had to be towed due to stalling mid rev range and the dealership never found a single fault. Besides that it feels very well made and is very quick after an APR tune. Both of us agree that even though it is fast and wipes out SSV's it just doesn't feel fun to drive. The Focus ST, WRX, Megane RS are all much more enjoyable to be in.

If you're thinking of sinking that much money on a car at least test drive the others or consider a A45 AMG. God even a fucking Renault has to be more dependable than modern VW.

I'd buy a Golf R if they were cheaper.
>>
>>14806076
Those problems were before the tune and all mainly to do with the immobiliser, navigation system and the stop start. It makes me wonder in 10 what all these cars will be like in the second hand market.
>>
>>14806110
>10 what all these cars will be like in the second hand market.
Most cars made today will be absolute basket cases in 10 years, everything is so outrageously complex and there are so many computerized modules, today's cars will be extremely expensive to keep when they get old.
>>
>>14805028
No racing series uses side walls that thin. A little bit of compliance in a tyre helps it gain traction. Many people have proved this with private testing also.

He's partially right though, the 19" wheels come equipped with 235/35/19 tires, that sidewall isn't thin enough to be a problem. The GT-R uses 35 profile tires on the rear, the BMW M2 uses them all around, it's not an unreasonably thin tire, just looks funny.

Plenty of guys with turbo falcons went from 18" to 20" wheels, whilst keeping the same rolling diameter, and lost plenty of time on both the 1/4 mile and the track. They promptly went back to the 18's.

I wonder why the F1 guys don't run less sidewall?
>>
>>14806298
So you're telling me that your examples mean that the 35 profile tires on the rear of the stupidly fast GT-R are too thin and having 40s would make it faster?

>>14806305
Depends on the width of the tyre as to how much sidewall a 35 profile has. Race GTR's run more sidewall. I dare say they know more about making the car fast than some guy wanting bigger wheels for 'Muh stiffer sidewall'.
>>
>>14806255
This, ss vf2 with a tekno or walkinshaw upgrade
>>
>>14806298
You're an idiot, a Ford Falcon's OEM tire size with 18s is 245/40/18, to keep the same rolling diameter with 20s you'd have to run 245/30/20. Anything lower than 35 profile is past "good, stiff tire" territory and into "lack of compliance"
>>
>>14806325
Race cars are not street cars and race tires are not street tires. I never said the 19" wheels were the best size, only that the sidewalls are not small enough to be a problem, which is factually correct.
>>
>>14806338
>Your an idiot.
Obviously you don't tyre. Sidewall is dependant on width. A blanket statement like "Anything lower than 35 profile is past "good, stiff tire" territory and into "lack of compliance" is just retarded.

For your info, the 35 for sidewall is a percentage of the tyre width. Also when they went to 20" rims they went wider, 275's or 295's. Still resulted in poorer launches, and slower corner speeds.
>>
>>14806298
They're not allowed to? They're also not allowed to have good tires.
>>
>>14806275
In what way is he partially right? Cars run small aspect sidewalls because they have big wheels to clear big brakes. There is no advantage in "sidewall stiffness" from running a short aspect tire. Learn what a contact patch is.
>>
>>14806357
Not a problem if you want to trundle around the street.
The responses were to this post. It specifically mentions performance. >>14805028

Big wheels are like alloy radiators. "OEM uses them everywhere so they Must be good!!" When often a smaller wheel if better for comfort, and performance, and copper is significantly more efficient at removing heat than alloy.
>>
>>14806395
Not every racing series restricts tyre and wheel size. None can be seen with rubber bands.

They're mostly in between the stuff you get standard on the base model and ones that are really thin for looks.
>>
>>14806305

If the GT-R specifically benefits from taller tyres, that I don't know. What I do know is that even on racing series engineers have to compromise for marketing.

I have a friend that worked at a BTCC team in the mid 90's, when by regulations you could choose either 18 or 19 inch wheels, and they used the, tested and proven to be faster, 18 inch.
Mid 90's they get contacted by BMW's marketing department, which says they have to use the 19 inch, to "boost sales, etc.". The team replies back, saying that, after extensive testing, the 18 inch were faster in every way. At this point BMW's higher ups intervene, and demand that the team start using 19 inch wheels.

Here's now a street example, Lotus Elise S2, that runs 17 inch wheels all around. What if I told you Lotus engineers wanted to use 15 inch ones instead?
