P Plate laws restricted young drivers from high powered vehicles. Before turbos were added to that list the VL Turbo was probably the fastest P Plate legal car you could buy. Coupled with the fact they were fairly cheap, so Gino or Habib could buy one after working a couple of months in their uncle's Pizza/Kebab shop. This combination made it a status symbol, in the same way people still drool over '64 Impalas because of Eazy and 'Boys in the Hood'.

plus a dose pipe is mandatory for all VL commodores, if one is not fitted and the dose is not sick enough it won't be considered road worthy and won't be able to be registered
