A guy I used to work with has a 1990 Toyota Celica GT. I rode in it a few times, most fun I've ever had riding in a car. With tax return season upon us and having some money saved up, I've decided I'd like to get a similar vehicle. Something small but really fast and zippy, on the cheaper side (under $4000 give or take), manual transmission, and something that I could easily mod or fix. I have some minor experience working on cars, so this car would be a backup/fun car/car I can learn to drive stick with and lastly a car that I could work on and gain some more experience working on cars. I really liked his Celica but I don't have my heart set on one, but I'd like something similar. I have a car in good working order so this purchase would just be a fun fixer upper. Any recommendations would be awesome!

what is your zip code? i'll check surrounding CL and post suggestions

I'd just like to say that if the most fun you've had is in a 90s Celica you lead a very sad life.

Good luck with the car search

i'm thinking miata or aw11.

miata is more fun but less practical and surprisingly for such a light car gets pretty meh mpg's

AW11 is also more fun, but less practical and not everyone likes the handling characteristics.

The steering response is very confidence inspiring but the car just doesn't grip all that well stock.

93 st here
Its a great car. Very simple to work on. Very helpful and mature community as well. Make sure you spring you a GT at the very least though. St is absolutely gutless and the 4afe is not worth touching.
A 2.0/2.2l with bolt ons and a tune can make good power for a car that size. Say 160-200hp

Celicas are fun cars.
>>
Celicas are excellent. Am Australian. Have owned 5. 3 5sfe 2.2 and 2 3sgte 2.0 turbo.

Great cars, great community, plenty of parts, plenty of donor celicas for cheap and the 5sfe is a hell of a motor. Not that powerful, but its got good torque and sounds alright.

How about SW20s?

Not as practical as a Celica and harder to wrench on, despite having the same engine, but more fun being mid-engined and RWD.
>>
>>14782659
you could probably only get an SW21 (5S-FE) for 4k unless you want a broken car
>>
>>14782710
would be helpful to know the kind of budget OP has or what kind of area he's in
>>
OP here, thanks for the suggestions so far guys! Live in Wisconsin and budget is $4,000 maximum.

What's so fun about grip anyway? Cars are at their most fun when you're not gripping
>>
>>14782812
i'm not entirely sure if that poster is right, but in general mr2s don't work so well when you've exceeded your grip limits
>>
OP here, just had another thought, what about a Mitsubishi Eclipse? Had a buddy in high school that had a turbo charged 02 I believe, that was a pretty fun car as well.
>>
>>14782710
Oh yeah, guess that would be the case wherever OP is from.
SW20s are really cheap here in Britain and pretty much all of them are the 3SGE models.
