Hey /o/ ive got a question.

I just got a 1990 chevy cheyenne 1500, and its sputtering badly due to a hole in the exhaust pipe leading up to the muffler. I know it will be obnoxiously loud if i cut it off where the hole in the pipe is, but will it affect how the truck runs if i do?

By sputtering do you mean you can hear the exhaust coming out of the hole? But anyways yes you can cut it off. But put a turn down on it facing towards the side of the truck so you don't have exhaust floating around underneath the truck. It might be a little loud but not too bad. Did that on my 2002 1500.

Photo of the hole in the pipe.

Sputtering as air attempting to leave the hole(in the photo below) and making the truck shake as it blows out.

Ah OK. Was gonna say if the engine is sputtering then it wasn't the exhaust at fault. But ya that's about where I cut mine off. Should be fine.

As long as you leave the cats on, it won't be loud.

I've never seen an entire vehicle shake just from a hole in the exhaust pipe.
Is there something more to this?

Almost definitely.

put a soup can and exhaust clamps, instead of cutting it off

Sounds more like a vacuum leak, timing issue, stuck egr valve, upstream O2 sensor, or any number of things.
but sputtering caused by a hole in the exhaust pipe? Well,... idk 'bout that son

Vee-8, shmee-8, v-6, 4-banger, makes no difference.

Did you see the large hole in the pipe?
>>

The muffler itself is gone too.
