Go with the ascotgruen, it is more of a classy colour especially since it is a metallic. Although it would mix well with a rusted panel...

I've been dealing with what I thought was a vacuum leak. Tonight for the first time ever my EML light popped on so I thought I'd scan for a new code using the Peake tool and luckily it showed exactly the problem which was the throttle position sensor.

Ordered and replacing when I get it. No more SES light either after I cleaned this one. I did reset it but for now it's staying out.

Do these cars normally take a while to warm up?

Probably everyone else here, BMWs tend to make you this way. I didn't give half a shit about any of my cars before this, now I'm super obsessive about it. I fix even little tiny cosmetic issues no one would ever notice, like a broken piece of plastic on my seat guide.

>>
>>14771703
Haha did you come across my thread on Bimmerforums?

I myself am down to ISC N1s or ST XTAs. The Xs don't have adjustable damping. The big difference between ST and KW is the housing, zinc versus inox. Plus you get decent camber plates and shock mounts with the STs. Basically, with a street car the STs are the way to go. KWs for the track. They both have the same twintube dampers, a design that KW likes so much they prefer them over monotubes.

As for the ISCs, they seem to be lauded and backed by BimmerWorld. They should definitely be a goos choice on the lower end, if you only have $1000 to spend get them. But I know KW is a great company, so I'm focusing on getting their STs.

And with the ISCs out there, you really don't have a reason to get BCs. And many of anything cheaper than BCs are made in BC's factory in Taiwan to lower standards (e.g. Megan Racing). Sure you can get a kit for $600 but the ride will be shit and the dampers will wear out and a weld may break. Just pony up a little extra and live regret free. $1000 is already on the cheap end.

Sounds like my T-Stat is ready to take a shit then I guess. Car takes anywhere from 15-20 mins to fully warm up. Then it'll stay at 176-187F consistently. Everything is stock, and ambient temps were in the high 40s today.

I drive it until it warms up, just don't beat on it.

>>14771847
Yeah, I'm not even considering BCs, they're unviersally shit for any car except maybe obscure 1980s-90s Sports Cars where your other options are equally shitty Teins.

And yeah, good pointing out the KW V1/ST Xs don't have camber plates, only the KW V2/ST XTAs do. I did notice the STs have a shorter warranty (5yr vs Lifetime), the housing is the least of my worries. Car won't see winter (maaaybe once or twice if I take it early in late winter followed by obsessive underbody washing)

The ISC N1s do have camber adjustment though. I'll probably go with them or maybe take a chance on the Hi-ops.

I don't even bother following Bimmerforums. They're obsessed with either $2-3000+ ASTs/TCKlines or outdated Konis/Bilstein Sports + H&R Spring Combos (which ultimately cost the same).

I did notice the E36s are hard on shocks/struts. They wear out noticably in 30-40k~ miles so its hard to buy a good used set. Even the set of Monroes (OE Sachs) this car has are already 4 years /20-30k miles old and blown out.

Link related are the Hiops. Never heard of them, some kind of obscure Aus/Euro brand from the early-mid 2000s. There's also a sketchy set of PSS9s for $1000 on eBay. ECS also has HSD Monotubes for $1300

Well I can't say anything about the HRTs, but HSDs are dropshipped and have virtually no support. They are a rebranding of Stance for the UK as far as I am aware.

I am pretty sure I know the eBay listing you are talking about. Caught my eye but wouldn't trust it.

Indeed, the forums largely recommends TCKs or cup kits or GCs, the latter which I would say are actually worth it. Oddly enough despite them shitting on any coilover kit under 1500, they all seem to recommend ISCs regardless. For some reason nobody talks about KW much, but ST had some supportive voices.

The 2000 already has an aftermarket touch screen stereo, which usually cost around $250-$600 and terrible looking aftermarket tail lights but it also has that sexy black interior.

The 2002 exterior looks better with the white signal lights and better looking tail lights. Also the 2002's business cd might be aux compatible.

I'd say check each car to see what problems it might have, like subframe cracking, vanos, etc.
>>
>>14773791
I realize that you want something easy because this is your first car, but do not buy an automatic BMW. Ever.
A manual 325i would be okay but for that kind of money you could get a 540i or a 530i and have money to spare. E46s kind of have a boyracer tax.
>>
>>14773832
Don't mind so much about the radio etc. Would change the fuck out of that ugly ass steering wheel and back to stock lights on the 323, that's about it. Not sure if I'd save anything over buying the 325.
>>14773861
Reason for this? Technically it's my second car, had a 1994 civic vti that I learnt in. Been through hell and back with that car, so not new to spending money and having to fuck around to get a car to do what it's meant to. Glad it's my brothers now.
>>
>>14773877
Automatics in general, but particularly BMW automatics have a tendency to shit their transmission much earlier than they should. The 323ci in particular has an issue where you can't select the reverse gear too, which can be incredibly annoying.
>>
>>14773885
that and bmw automatics aren't that fun. smooth sure, but manuals compliment the e36/e46/e39 engines far better
>>
>>14773893
This, BMWs like to pull super hard above 3500rpm and the automatic never lets it get there.

You've tried the Sport modes, right?

My old '94 E38 had an auto that held gears at the midrange right in the torque, it was awesome. Other BMWs I've driven do the same thing. Also manual mode, etc.

Sure the slushboxes aren't a DCT or manual, but they aren't all that bad especially compared to slushboxes from other makes.

I need some advice you guys. I got an offer from my mechanic to exchange engines, I'd give them my M43B16 which they need in order to swap it in some chick's car that has problems and they'd swap a 2.0 I6 in mine, not sure if M52 or M50. The thing is, my 1.6 even though it's a lawnmower engine is in really good condition and I put quite some money into it, I've recently had all gaskets except for the head gasket replaced to prevent oil and coolant leaks and so far that was the only problem. Should I go for it? I don't know in what condition that 2 liter is, what could be the possible problems that I might run into and how expensive would they be to fix? I'm not sure why he wants to get rid of his but I'm assuming he wants to swap in something more powerful.

If you're gonna tell me to go for something bigger, fuck off. I'm not considering this swap because I desperately need a more powerful engine, but because it might turn out to be a cheap exchange.

People have a harder time accepting the looks of the e36 vs e46 and the e9x vs f3x because the former were the first to present a design change, the latter building on it to a later climate.

In my opinion, each series has gotten worse in looks because of the transition from sports to luxury. It is evident in the styling.

>>14786387
Well just speaking for e36, since it is the year 2016 there really is no difference to prefer an OBD-I over OBD-II for performance parts or maintenance. As a general, parts are cheap and numerous if you know where to look, and asides from some mistreatment from a PO on my first one, there really wasn't much to get shat on to maintain. If you have multiple oil leaks though they can be a bitch to resolve. They say coolant issues and aux fan are what may go on you; I never had such issues. Just be sure they replaced fluids if is an auto, else you might need a transmission rebuild. Other than that it really depends on the specimen, some were taken better care of than others and that will carry over to you. Really solid cars.

The E36 has got probably the biggest aftermarket and is incredibly common, so parts prices are good. Reliability depends on the engine.

As for handling, I couldn't choose between the E30 and E36 so go with your personal preference.

Just bought myself a MG ZS (made under BMW ownership, so it's thread relevant) but this beauty (E34 525td) just popped up. It's on the other side of Britain from me (I'm in central Scotland, this is about 250 miles each way) but damn do I want me a diesel BMW.

Personally, I'd go for an E30 if possible. However, the market has completely dried up by now. Expect to pay a shitload of money for a well-maintained example that doesn't have a huge amount of miles on it. The E36 right now is essentially in the same place E30 was 10 years ago, so the former is probably your safest long term bet.

Why should I buy a Beamer over an Acura? I want something built well and reliable that isn't overvalued, any BMWs that fit that?
>>
>>14789525

I have a 2008 TSX as well as the M3.

I daily the M3 to the tune of 800 miles a week now. Was once a track car for the first three years I owned it.

As reliable as the Acura. Easier to work on too. Design of the E46 is very simplistic in nature no matter what you have to do. I've rebuilt the VANOS and have adjusted valves many times on this car and have done an impeccable job every time and my skills are average.

I've never had to tear into the Acura, but still. NOTHING has ever required me to tear into the M3 either. Everything was done for preventative measures (aside from a failed fuel pump but that was faster than removing and reassembling the intake assembly). I would not own just the M3 however cause you never know...
>>

possibly
sounds like a question for the bimmerforums e39 forum, or possibly the e46 forum since it'll be more populate and they have the same engine

Should I buy a 2002 330xi? There's two minor rust spots along some seams, but that's to be expected on a 2002, especially in Canada.

The guy wants $4700, do you think that it would be making a mistake to buy this car? Everything else seems to be in good condition, the motor is purring, and I would be taking it in for a PPI before actually buying it.

This would be my first beamer, so I lack any experience with this brand.
>>
>>14796035
ppi mandatory
read up on e46 common issues and tutorials on youtube for various repairs on the e46 platform to see if they seem to intimidating for you to do yourself
make sure the guy has service records. they don't need to be super detailed but if there's big chunks of its maintenance history missing.....be careful

excess weight
more drivetrain losses (less power)
little bit harder to get into gear if you're driving stick (which you should be)
lack of rwd feels
weird suspension geometry meaning your options for upgrading the suspension are much more limited.

get a 330i or 330ci instead, in manual
get snow tires

Throw S50 or S52 cams in it while you've got it apart. You can make pretty big gains with just an intake, headers and those cams. The only tools you'll need are related to VANOS timing.

having my own business in the fashion industry, it's easy to justify a leased car, if questioned, because you're constantly taking buyers out, transporting samples and materials etc
>>
>>14803021

>>
>>14803032
watching motortrend review the ats-v has me excited to get behind the wheel of one, but i truthfully would hate to be in that interior--especially when stuck in LA traffic

i definitely would not consider myself a car guy, it's something i've been trying to study and teach myself as of late
at the end of the day, especially considering my industry, the design of a car is as important as the performance to me
>>
>>14803052
in that case, if anything, you should be different instead of following the bmw crowd.

have you test driven an ats-v yet? aside from the instrument cluster the interior quality and layout is good, the gloss black everywhere isn't so good though
