But didn't Saturn make their own cars at one point? i thought the S series was an all original in-house design?

I feel like if maybe GM had let them continue to do what they were doing maybe the S series could've been to GM what the Civic is to Honda.

A very moldable reliable platform that GM could use to fill all their small-car needs.

They have a small car called the "Cruze" and "Spark" but it feels more like a place-holder than anything like the Cavalier, Cobalt etc.

Saturn was good as a proof of concept that GM's rules were silly and ignoring them would result in a better and more popular car, but was ultimately killed because daddy GM only sees that number next to a line called "net profits".

The S-series was the only car that was truly Saturns, the rest were rebadged Opels, much like half of GM's lineup is nowadays anyway.

i actually own a cruze. bought it for cheap and i agree the car can feel slapped together. not the top tier GM vehicles like their large trucks and full sized sedans. sometimes panel gaps are weird and wide and the seatbelt mechanism is pretty weird keeps fucking up. still a good car but not great compared to godlike GM vehicles.

Jap cars were overtaking GM in the 80's so GM had the bright idea of operating a company inhouse like the japanese ran their companies.

The Buick has a much lower cost of ownership, is incredibly cheap to insure, and very comfy.

Yeah, it's a slow lump that gets terrible city fuel economy, but they are good, safe, economical choices.
