The gist of it is, octane determines how slow gasoline burns. The higher the octane, the slower the burn. "Premium" is just higher octane gas. You get no benefit from it, unless your car was meant to take higher octane fuel, due to higher compression. That's my understanding.

This talk about gasoline quality got me thinking, I have a two stroke moped that has two separate tanks for oil and gasoline. Now, when you mix oil and gasoline, do you not basically get dirty diesel anyway? What's the deal here? Could a twostroke moped run on diesel?

A few different tuner in Germany have tested 98 octane from differen stations. They found that modern engines regardless of the manufacturer tend to reduce the ignition angle due to knocking when 98 octane from JET gas stations was used.
Most other 98 octane from other stations were OK but the JET stuff is really knocking.

Still, so many people keep filling up there because it's usually cheaper here. Which would be OK with me. But there are a lot of people that don't understand that a reduced ignition angle means reduced power output and they argue that their engine still has the same output and fuel efficiency.

One guy spend a lot of money on some parts and tuned engine software. He had dyno runs with premium fuel and now only fills it up with the bad JET stuff. He's so proud of his 13L/100km fuel efficiency where everyone else with the same setup that's filling up with premoum 100 octane has more power AND 10L/100km fuel efficiency.

He's not able to comprehend it, we found out while talking to him.

2-stroke engines need oil mixed into the fuel to lubricate them. It's not 'dirty gasoline' or 'dirty diesel', it's a set ratio to make sure the engine doesn't seize.
And diesel will not burn in a gasoline engine.

Adding lube oil to petroleum does not make it diesel, much the same way as adding cat poo to milk does not make it cheese.

Your moped lacks the compression to ignite diesel, cannot ignite the diesel with a spark plug and most importantly does not have a diesel injector. There is no way to control the point of ignition if it were to occur, which it won't, so the diesel fuel would combust whenever it could. Before top dead center, at tdc, atdc who knows?

So no, you can not run your moped on diesel. You could mix diesel with petrol and it will run though down on power and very smokey. If you do try it though, film and upload plox.

How to tell BMWs by exhaust (2006+) for the newest generation, f80/82, it comes in 320i (single pipe) 328i (2 pipes, left side) 335i (twin pipes, one on either side) and M3/4 (twin dual pipes) same is true of the previous generation, except it does not come in 320 trim. No other easy/reliable way to tell them apart.

The reason why they use low compression and low RPM redline is different. If the RPM rise too much, the engine heats up and the air incoming into the cylinder pre-ignites from the heat, making the engine lose power and in some cases destroying it. The reason for the torque its is mad compression, which is also why diesel engines are heavier and build thougher.

Basically, in old engines, the air and diesel would be added inside the cylinder by the valves, and the high compression of the pistons would make the air compress so much it would heat up and spark the diesel.

On direct injection, only air enters, and the fuel is injected at almost the high point of the piston through the top, providing slightly better power and better reliability.

The reason why diesels run with less fuel is partially because they dont usually go to higher RPM (and their high torque means they can idle at lower RPM) And because there is not so much fuel injected to the engine compared to the standar fuel engines.


Fuel engines run a similar problem, the sparkplug ignites the fuel and the air at the same time, but if the engine runs on too high compression the air could ignite itself too soon, which is why higher-tier fuels are harder to ignite without a certain heat or without the sparkplug. A higher-tier fuel usually allows for either higher RPM before the engine misfires, higher compression, or most of the time both.

Getting a turbo is very much alike increasing both displacement and compression, which can fuck up the car, so most people rely on lowering the standar compression of the car before mounting a turbo, or the same issue than over-compressing the pistons would arise.

That goes through both superchargers and turbochargers.
