About the only way would be some kind of super-auto pilot... even then if it decides to blue-screen, you die screaming and so does everyone you land on.
(Unlike say an airliner which has about 5-7 redundant computers)

I just wish there was that sense of adventure car manufacturers had in the 80's and 90s

I don't even like Star Wars but always liked this game on N64. Imagine just being strapped to two giant turbofan engines. Would be fun. Also deadly, but fun. I would love to have the means to build a working prototype that just ran on wheels and take it down the drag strip.
