Scion was fantastic, but got a bad reputation quick for reasons I'm not quite sure of.
Scion was the result of an earlier project to sell cars to young people called Project Genesis.
Project Genesis marketed 3 Toyotas different from all others from 1999 to 2001 when Genesis ended. The Genesis project cars were the Toyota Celica, Toyota MR2, and Toyota Echo.
The Echo wasn't unique or quirky enough to attract any following. This is why Scions later had controversial styling and quirky features.
The MR2 suffered from dealer price mark-ups (because sports car) that pushed the price of the car out of the range of the very market it was intended for. This is why Scion took Saturn's no haggle pricing but went one step further in making all their cars 1 spec with no trim levels. The only real options on a Scion were color, transmission, and dealer-installed aftermarket accessories.
The Celica was an initial success before Sales tapers off after Project Genesis ended a failure in 2001. From the Celica came Scion's best selling model ever, the tC.
Further research found that young people wanted a brand not associated with intensely boring products like the Corolla or Camry, so the decision came that a new brand was to be created for young people, by young people. Scion started, and operated out of a small Toyota warehouse in California as their headquarters.
Research also show that youth wanted something unique and enjoyed making the cars an expression of their own likes, beliefs and want with the wild modification scene, so it was decided Scion would offer aftermarket parts of all types through the dealers and wouldn't void the warranties regardless of whether the parts in questions were shift knobs or supercharger kits.
Anything experimental about marketing by Toyota was tried at Scion first. To this day, I believe the best marketing campaign they ever did was the short-lived "Scion United" campaign back around 2008.

Toyota for kids.
>>
>>14723100
Toyota trying to appeal to millenials. They did a decent job, but tried too hard in most cases, and the cars ended up looking too childish and underpowered.
>>
/o/ constantly complains about how dealers keep making the same boring shitboxes, but then when one tries to come along and try something new /o/ calls it shit and says its good that they died.

>do not trust /o/
>do not care about /o/ opinions
>/o/ is a meme board thats as bad as /v/ or /pol/

Extend this to most of 4chan. /tg/ is the only good board and rpg is some degenerate fag shit if you're over 18
>>
>>14723100
first gen xB and tC were the only decent models. You still had to put a couple thousand into them to rise them above shit-tier though.

It really is a shame they died, it had a lot of potential. Toyota didn't innovate after the first gen, products became severely noncompetitive.
>>
>>14723100
Big fat "meh"
>>
What would /o/ do? Buy a 2016 FRS or wait it out and get a new 2017 Toyota 86?
>>
>>14727159
Depends which is actually better. I guess wait and compare the two, then rebadge the new one if I chose it. The problem with Scion was never the name, "Scion FR-S" is a cool name I think, why throw it away with the division?
>>
>>14727159
Neither. I'd buy a year old V8 mustang
>>
>>14727172
The only difference is the badges, front end, tail lights, and 5 more horsepower. woo. Such a huge difference
>>
>>14727159
You might as well wait seeing as the 2017 is only months away from being released. Especially if you want steering wheel controls for the stereo. Also has silver (gray) stitching. Interior is less plastic-y as well.

Alternatively you might be able to get an okay deal on a '16 during model clearance around the same time, in August/September.
>>
I liked Scion. I bought an iA just before Toyota announced they're ending the brand.
>inb4 rebadged Mazda2
I really appreciated how they don't have any bullshit with trim levels. Every car is "base" and every base car comes well equipped. I know most of you never shop for new cars, but this was a pretty huge selling point for me. RIP. I wonder if my shitbox will be lusted after by /o/tists 10 years from now.
>>
Less boring than Toyota, but not by a lot. FR-S was cool, but should have had a turbo. Toyota and Subaru both have extensive turbocharging experience and they missed a great opportunity to use it.
>>
>>14727196
The problem I have with those kind of steering wheels is that I have big hands and I might accidentally press something just by gripping the wheel.
>>
>>14727212
>I wonder if my shitbox will be lusted after by /o/tists 10 years from now.

It would be lusted after just as much as Eagles and Saturns are today.
>>
>>14727227
I bought a running Saturn for $100 the other day. There was no lust involved.

>>14727225
Go for the FR-S then.
>>
>>14727212
Why did you even bother? A civic for <5k would be just as good as the iA.
>>
>>14727246
It's a Mazda 2 with Mazda crossed out and "Scion" written in its place in crayon.
>>
>>14727256
I somehow doubt it.
>>
>>14727257
I know. But that iA is god awful looking, while the Mazda 2 is more appealing.
>>
>>14727276
Mazda won't sell you a Mazda 2 though. If you want one, you buy a Scion iA or whatever it will be marketed as at Toyota.
>>
>>14727276
I'm crossing my fingers that a few years down the line, I can just import a Mazda 2 front bumper and headlights and bolt them on. I don't know why Toyota felt the need to make it look so ugly. Fortunately they left the rest of the car alone.
>>
>>14727192
New gear ratios too.
>>
>>14727260
It's true. Replace the suspension components if they haven't been already, put on good tires, and it'll drive like a dream.
>>
>>14727289
That is retarded. Reason US isn't getting it is due to the suits saying it isn't profitable.
>>14727292
Because Toyota. Seems they don't know how to design cars without looking fugly.
>>
>>14727338
>Reason US isn't getting it is due to the suits saying it isn't profitable.
No. It's because when Mazda actually Sold the 2 in America, virtually no one bought one.
>>
>>14727349
>The redesigned 2016 Mazda 2 won’t be coming to the U.S. after all, despite being built just south of the border at a new factory in Mexico. According to a report in Automotive News, Mazda’s U.S. brass has decided that the subcompact just isn’t profitable enough to bother with in a country where gas is cheap and everybody wants a crossover anyway.

Mazda sold 13,615 copies of the 2 in 2014, against 59,340 Honda Fits, 63,192 Ford Fiestas, and 93,518 Chevy Sonics. And the company is busy this year with the launch of the new CX-3 and, of course, the new Miata.
Even the Sonic outsold it. Sad.

Why did Toyota think it was excellent idea to change the front end from that to that shit the iA got?
>>
>>14727159
for me definitively the Toyota one

I don't care what people say about the 86 it just makes me happy that toyota is making sports cars again

That's the previous gen. This is the current gen that the iA is based off of. It's pretty much a baby Mazda3.
