Hey guys, I need help.

So basically, all my life I've been pretty interested in cars. I did automotive courses in my first 3 years of highschool and I learned a lot about cars and their functions and how to repair parts of them, so I'm kinda well off in terms of knowledge.

However, my best friend is an absolute petrolhead. The kind of guy who can tell you what kind of engine is in any car, and can tell a car by it's exhaust. You point out any car to him and he'll tell you the make/model/year, and he's got this superb knowledge on cars. Him and I were at the dealership the other day checking out one of the S-Class Mercedes, and he was telling me all about the interior of the car, and about the engine and everything, and he was having really detailed talk about a Mustang GT with the Ford Dealer and whatnot, and I really want to get to that level because I really love cars and want to get more invested in them once I've got more money.

Basically, do you guys have any videos/articles or even your own advice that can get me going on cars? Anything that would help me learn about car models and how to differentiate makes/models/years and engines and even some technical details.

Thank you so much in advance.

Literally no joke, play a Forza motorsport game and try out as many cars as possible. They have a ton of great cars that you can recognize, common and uncommon. A lot of it is just acquired knowledge about specific cars though, if you're interested in a car you'll tend to research it.

I've always wanted to play racing games but
A) I don't have a console, so I'm limited to steam games
B) None of the steam racing games seem to include regular cars, it's all Formula 1 and I'm not a fan of drag racing.

Know of any good games to download? I've got an extra $17 sitting around on my steam account right now.

Absolutely agree with him.

It's through years and years of collecting knowledge, there's no cheat-sheets I'm aware of.

I'm a BMW guy, and in M3s, there's the different generations. In 2008-2013 M3's, they reworked the brake lights (LCI) in 2011, and the only way you can tell is the pattern of the brake lights. So I can peg an M3 down to a 2-3 year range, and based on the wheels, I can determine a lot of the features on the car.

This knowledge is from 2 years of being obsessed with my M3, and M3's in general.

My point: Become obsessed with cars. Get curious.

For the past week since I've been seeing him a lot and all we do is talk about cars, I've been getting pretty obsessed. I spend a lot of my time reading articles on CarThrottle and watching Youtube videos, but I don't really know where I can find legitimate information and not just filler.

In that case I'd suggest looking on craigslist or whatever and seeing what catches your eye, basically just window shopping. Then take 10 minutes to google things about it. What years it was made, what engines it was offered with, facelifts, common problems, etc.

Do yourself a favor and stop reading them. Absolute garbage. Read Motortrend or something instead. Look up build articles on hotrod.com if you like older American cars.

I only like CarThrottle because it's like a social media, it's pretty convenient. Where on MotorTrend can I learn info about current cars rather than upcoming cars?

>>14702171

I spend a lot of time on craigslist, yeah. this is the kind of tip im looking for, thank you.
