Nissan pls
>>
Welcome to the future.

Gm has recently been arguing in court that you are only licensing it's ECU software. You own the car, but they own the software that makes it function. with OTA updates, they can update it to track whatever they want it to track, and you're stuck with the choice of accepting the new software EULA, or owning a big fucking paperweight.

What happens if you decline?
>>

The NSA is now tracking you instead of Nissan for being a dangerous outlaw/contrarian.
>>
>>14697736
I guess aftermarket ECU companies are gonna get some extra business then.

Why would you?
>>
>>14697799
only terrorists and terrorist sympathisers do that, sonny.
>>
>>14697846
This. Thank fuck for aftermarket ECU's.

This bullshit is fucking mind boggling and we need to be fighting to stop it happening.
>>
>>14697736
I thought they were only doing that because of the aftermarket tuners

Not happening.

>>
this is why I will always own my car from the 70s
>>
>>14697846
Considering how much of a modern car is computer controlled, it's basically new wiring harness, not just ECU.

>>14697849
It's not just GM pulling this shit. There's the nissan thing you see above, and all subarus will now have the tracking software available for insurance companies to negate the need for their own dongle. meaning at some point when you go to insure your new hybrid diesel WRX STI, your insurance company is going to ask for the code for access to your tattler. If you refuse you'll be placed in the highest risk group and charged to hell and back. If you accept, your rates will climb every time you enjoy the car.

>>14697899
That's part of it, but their main argument in court was to defend the car from "hackers". Attempting to apply the DMCA to their ECU.
>>
Time to buy a 90s car and never let it die. 91 Celica here i come

I can't let you do that.

It's not gonna be easy to create an ECU that can replicate the functionality of the stock ECU properly.
>>
>>14698085
It's a GM car with a bad automatic transmission and poor programming. If you try to shift and the ECU doesn't like it, it will tell you "shift denied". Note that this isn't the case on sports cars with good automatic transmissions.
>>
>>14697703
Daily reminder that if you can't take it apart you don't own it. This goes for your car, laptop, keurig machine, etc... Vote with your wallet, people.
>>
>>14698287
Ah, people on here know nothing as usual.
>>14698085
It's a trick GM used to cheat the EPA. It forces short shifting. 1-4-6, I believe.
>>
>>14698306
>Daily reminder that if you can't take it apart you don't own it.
Who said you can't take it apart?
>>
>>14697703
Oh shit!!
Tell me again why buy Nissan or any other shit Brand?
>>
>>14697937
But they already do? The main companies are making ECUs to make the car function. It's not exactly rocket science to make an aftermarket ECU. It's on par with programming a normal PC.
>>
>>14698307

It's the automatic gearbox in M mode. If you try to shift into anything above second gear while at idle it won't let you.

In the manual box, you'll actually get a digital image of the gear shift pattern and it will force you out of 2nd.

Easily bypassed and if you don't do that then just rev it uleh
>>
>>14698314
software is a part of taking it apart.
>>
I seem to recall hearing that cars with GPS capability would record that GPS data for some period of time, and that it could be played back to determine speed and so on... or is this just my paranoia fucking with me?
>>
>>14698318

I mean, come on, I know it's a shitmatic, but at least be accurate in your stupid criticisms.
>>
>>14698455
You are being paranoid. Look up U.S. v. Patrick EFF Amicus,

Ill sum it up for you

>The U.S. Supreme Court has already recognized that data about where we go can be incredibly revealing and that cell phones hold vast amounts of private information—potentially the sum of an individual’s private life. The court ruled that searching a cell phone found during an arrest and tracking a car using GPS now both require a search warrant

lolno, that's only half of the equation. Confirmed not knowing how an ecu works.
