I've been passenger in a car with a texting driver a few times. They don't seem to notice their mistakes, but it's fucking frightening. I feel you OP. Car makers try to appease normies by cramming more features and technology into cars every year but I just want a bare bones safe car. Is that too much to ask?

I'm researching for a new car to buy but how do you choose the safest car?

First of all there is a shocking lack of crash test information and ratings on cars pre 2004 especially from the IIHS. Even when the NHTSA takes up the slack and provides some information the results are often different from the IIHS, How can they claim the newer cars are all safer when they did not even test the older cars very well in the first place?

The new computerized equipment that now comes standard on cars like esc that is supposed to have saved lives. I'm sure it works fine in brand new cars being tested what happens to that same technology as a car ages and things start to malfunction over time?

There is also debate about size because larger vehicles are stronger and will always do better in a crash. but does that mean that a compact car with excellent ratings is worse then a full size car with poor ratings? I do not know.

They also say pickup trucks are more likely to roll over because of their high center of gravity but what about the altered small pickups like a lowered ford ranger? Do they still rollover?

And can these tests ever be truly fair and the same? I mean if the seat on one car is a little farther forward or higher or lower than another car of the same size and weight will that affect the outcome of the crash test?

Finally, all the new computerized parts in cars today are just more things to go wrong and get people killed. Like the Toyota unintended acceleration (where faulty computer code is still suspected but never proved) and the Chevrolet faulty ignition switch. Do they take that into account when giving safety ratings for these cars? No
