Deregulation of the auto industry.

Safety standards and CAFE are strangling cars, and the industry is deciding what the people want, instead of following what the people actually want. The industry is shilling hard for SUV's when they are really no better than a normal car, and in some cases, actually worse. as a result, the SUV has gone from a rugged 4x4 offroad truck, to the successor to the minivan, so that soccer moms can feel safe while men can feel slightly less emasculated because it's not a minivan and it has offroad capability that he will never use.

cars similarly, have been bloated and neutered by regulations. Cars were mostly fine until Obama took office and started going full ham on CAFE and other safety standards.

when the Auto industry crashed, the Federal Govt told them what they had to do and not do in exchange for the bailout. So we lost brands like Pontiac because despite GM planning to stage a Pontiac comeback, the feds said "lolno. cut it."

the industry is partially at fault here, but they probably should have been left to their own devices instead of the Govt stepping in. Sink or swim.

Also, give up all pretence of fuel economy and restraint. American cars are great because the designers didn't give a fuck about efficiency.
Huge fuckoff landbarges with big burbling V8 engines. Massive SUVs as big as a whale that seat 25. Big trucks as wide as a lane and able to haul a tank uphill with the brakes on.

Make them unsafe for pedestrians and drivers. Razor-sharp heavy chromed protuberances to break legs and shatter hips. Bench seats you can conceive children on, and enough seating to transport them.
SUVs that flip if turned above 5MPH. Pickups that need half a ton of ballast to get grip. Muscle cars that want to go everywhere sideways, with tuned amplified exhausts, enough power to propel an oil tanker, and 0-60 times comparable to European econobox hatchbacks because of all the bodywork and chrome.
Let them catch fire on impact. Let the brakes be advisory only.
Fuck safety. You can always make more kids, that's what the huge rear seat is for!
Drive-in movies would become great again. Parenthood would be mandatory to make up for the accident losses. You'd buy three cars a year just to keep up with the styles and fashions, and just send the old ones back to be melted down and updated, or sell them to your kids for pennies.

Back up cameras are nice, they really are, they make parallel parking a breeze, but they in no way should be a mandatory feature, because that just makes a new driver dependent on it. take away the backup cam and suddenly half of america doesnt know how to park anymore.

there's no reason for a high end sportscar to have to follow the same safety regulations as a 5 seater family car.

Does someone who buys a snek really care about the same features like someone who buys a prius or a corolla cares about? I doubt it.

And someone who buys an SUV to actually use for it's original intender purpose does not have the same features a soccer mom cares about in her mall crawler.

To be fair, I was driving my sister's new Jeep Renegade yesterday and went to look out of the rear window to reverse, and couldn't see shit. It was so tiny and the rest of the car was so bloated. I had to rely on the camera. New vehicles practically demand it.
