>>
>>14682199
Either or, really.

Ninja 250 is faster and is a twin, but the CBR has fuel injection and optional combined ABS.

You might be able to find an older model Ninja 250 ('88-'07) for much cheaper than the newer model too, might be more value for money.
>>
>>14682199
Get a 650 twin.

The 250/300 cc girl bikes are a meme troll.

650 twins have manageable power, good ergonomics, and they aren't underpowered on the highway.

SV650's are cheap and plentiful. Ninja 650's and CBR650's are nice too. If you want to go real cheap look for an older HawkGT.
>>

Yeah it makes a huge difference to how quickly you fatigue as well. My R1 sits at around 4000-4500rpm at 65mph or so. Redline is 13750rpm so it's basically silent with no vibrations at that speed.
>>
So I've read the guide. But here's the thing: i really don't care about safety. In fact, I'd like something that will kill me.

>>14682230
650 twins are the perfect balance between manageable power but enough power that you can be competent on the highway and you won't be sick of it wanting something more once you get tired of the pathetic 25hp 250 you got trolled into riding around.

$5000 will get you a clean modern (2004+) 600 or 1000cc sportbike that will be fast enough to make you piss your pants and send you into a guardrail at 160+mph.

Have at it, pick whichever one has the color you like and a catchy name that tickles your pickle. They are all essentially the same other than minor differences that you'll be too new and inexperience to notice.
>>

>>
>>14682199
If you have the money, just get something higher than a 250. something like a 500-650 range. That way if you decide to go on highway, you be trying your engine so hard just keep up with some traffic, and it'll save on some gas. Also there are tons of decent priced 500-650cc bikes on CL, just research any major issues with a bike you like and when you go to check them out you'll know what to look for.
>>
>>14682278
>my opinion is "good solid information" because I say so
>your opinion is irrelevant because I say so

Please explain what a 250/300 does that a 650 twin doesn't and how it would possibly be better to learn on?

Since when does a beginner deadlift their bike?
Relative weight differences are essentially irrelevant once the bike is rolling at the speeds and pace a beginner will be riding. As with any bike while stopped, it's a matter of keeping it balanced over the contact patch. You can drop even a tiny bike if you're not paying attention to how it's balanced.

>>cheaper to buy and maintain
Nope. Maintenance is the same. Purchase price is pretty much the same too. My brother bought a HawkGT for $900. You can find SV650's in good condition for ~$2000+ pretty readily.

>Mr. Garcia of the Bronx was caught on the Red HONDA CRF 450 on June 19, 2015. When the suspect spotted the 46 Precinct POM, Mr. Garcia attempted to flee on the stolen motorcycle but stalled the engine. The suspect dropped the motorcycle and attempted to flee on foot where he was apprehended shortly after. Upon further inspection of the motorcycle, it was found that Mr. Garcia had run out of fuel.

Kek

And the cop told me when they got back over the motorcycle in the street, 5 little nogs were trying to pick it up and take it.

I can see an SV650 being a bit intimidating for low speed maneuvers, you can't fudge it you really need to know how to control the bike at low speed.

Arguably though that lead to me (and my brother) getting much better at low speed control than most people we know as we were basically forced to actually practice at it.

#1 the engine.

Combined with the gearing it leads to a bike that feels too strong off the bottom end for no rational reason, but one that runs out of steam and starts wheezing well before the redline.

So it's too strong off the bottom, but too weak up at the top, coming geared all wrong doesn't really help that.

2nd is what most people go after which is the suspension, it's hard to put into words how inappropriate it is for the power level of the bike, it visibly wallows up and down like a waterbed and when you're on it it's just weird.

Ergoes and the sound are pretty nice, value is good.

To me it seems like a bike that was designed to impress on a showroom test ride, then slowly disappoint you as you own it, I suppose if you fixed the suspension that'd be one thing but it still leaves you with a bizarre motor that I can't make sense of.

Take the 09 engine, give it a more aggressive cam profile, TI valves etc. shift the power up top and put it in an R6 frame imo.

You literally have no idea what you are talking about. Pic related.

The FZ09 has a very linear power delivery throughout the rev range, it doesn't run out of steam at all at the top while still being strong at the bottom to make city riding a breeze.

The only real complaint about the power delivery is the throttle is snatchy and difficult to modulate at low throttle openings and in on-off-on transitions.

This can be fixed with an $85-150 tune through a tuner with Flashtune. Mail in your ECU after you put the exhaust you want on it and give them the specs of your mods. A plae like Danno's Racing or Bauce Racing can do the flash for cheap.

The other main drawback is it's suspension which can be easily and cheaply be fixed. See:

>>
>>14682508
This is literally the first time I've ever heard anyone say the FZ09 runs out of steam up top. It's literally as powerful as a 600 supersport (100+whp) up top but has the midrange and lowrpm power of a 750-1000

It just doesn't have a huge rush at it's top end like a 600 does because it has a lot more displacement to work with to make that power. But it is by no means weak up top.

You sound like you've never ridden one.

The rear suspension is garbage though. But it's an easy swap.

all I'm saying is you feel the engine lose go from about 8,000 RPM when you ride one, and why bother buying a bike with 100 hp at all if you're not planning on using it? I said in my initial post the engine gives you a different impression from the bottom then sort of disappoints you as you rev it out, that's all.

Why would you want a ridiculous amount of power down low on a street bike either? Just makes it a pain in the arse while doing low speed stuff, I'd hate to try motogymkhana on an MT/FZ 09.

rebuilding inverted forks isn't the easiest thing but anyone with any mechanical skill can pull it off. Racetech has free tech support to walk you through rebuilding your forks and installing their valve kits.

Replacing the shock is easy.
>Suspend rear of bike from the subframe (use an a-frame ladder or saw horses with a cushioned 2x4)
>unbolt OEM jello shock
>bolt in suitable replacement shock (like late model ZX6R shock)

Literally that easy.

Figure 2 hours for the forks, and about 30 minutes for the shock. Well worth the effort though.

If you wanted to you can get the shock resprung for your weight and revalved by racetech too for a bit more money, but just the stock ZX-6R shock is a drastic improvement that transforms the bike.

>hey look at that, the power curve starts flattening off like a whole 2000 RPM before the redline, almost exactly like what I said huh?
So it flattens off... It makes over 100whp for over 2000rpm. How the fuck is this a bad thing?
Running out of steam means it starts tapering off in power at the top, something the bike definitely does not do. In fact it keeps making power until it peaks a couple hundred RPM before redline.

600's have a more drastic fall off in horsepower up top than the FZ09.

>Seriously go and actually ride one, If you don't feel the drop off at the top i'll send you 5 bucks in the mail.
I've ridden once. I helped a buddy do a shock swap on his.

They don't run out of steam, they just keep pulling up top. It seems like you're expecting a 600cc tier rush of power up top when that's not how this bike revs, and for good reason. It's a lower revving, higher displacement street oriented triple. It's not wanting for power anywhere.

>>14682681
>wow that sounds exactly like what I fucking said.
You said they run out fo steam up top. This implies the bike doesn't make any power up top. Which is wrong.
The bike makes good power up top but isn't hamstrung in the low-mid range like a 600 is. Add in that it's lighter than most 600's and it's a great street bike.
Especially once you fix the suspension and the throttle response.

>I have ridden one, that's why I don't like them.
>Why do I have to like them?
No one said you have to like them. I'm just correcting your factually incorrect statements. These bikes don't run out of steam up top. They have a pretty much dead flat torque curve from just above idle while making about 50% more torque than a 600's peak over the entirety of it's rev range making for very linear power production. And they make 600 tier power up top.

These bikes have the low-mid rpm grunt to make twins jealous while still having the peak power of a 600 supersport. The best of both worlds so to speak.

Wrong, The bike produces more power and doesn't fall off until just before redline. That is the opposite of "running out of steam".

>but they're not even incorrect, you can see the line visibly just fall off as you get near the top.

The power starts leveling off at over 100whp. This is not "running out of steam". 600's and 1000cc supersports do the exact same thing, even worse because they level off and start losing power towards redline in a more drastic fashion than the FZ09. You have no idea what you are talking about.

Pic related.
This is what "running out of steam" looks like. Notice on the stock graph the bike makes peak power about 3000rpm before redline and power starts to taper off. This is exactly opposite of what the FZ09 does.

>I don't even know why you're arguing with me while saying the exact same things I'm saying as a counterargument..
I'm not saying the same things as you.

I'm emonstrating how what you are saying is wrong.

You're saying that a bike that makes a strong low-mid range and then goes on to make a strong top end in a linear fashion while making near peak power for a large swath of rpm without and dips or falling off of power until just before redline is somehow "running out of steam"

This is completely wrong.

They're not. Literally no body was talking about TZR's or 250RR's at all.
When people are recommending 250 starter bikes they are pretty much always talking about CBR250R and ninja 250 ladybikes or their 300cc equivalents.

TRR250R's and CBR250RR's are pretty terrible beginner bikes too, way too peaky and hard edged for someone to learn on. 650 twins are again, better bikes to learn on.

Please try harder with your shit tier trolling.

I did, but just to recap for your lazy ass they're better on fuel, and now that I think about it, lighter as well.

>They're not. Literally no body was talking about TZR's or 250RR's at all.

You made a blanket statement that ALL 250/300's are shit first bikes. Nowhere was specified that you didn't mean certain bikes like the TZR or MC22.

So unless a 250 isn't actually a 250 then I think you were in fact moving the goalposts.

>CBR250RR's are pretty terrible beginner bikes too, way too peaky and hard edged for someone to learn on.

Clearly you have never ridden a CBR250RR, they're one of the most popular learner bikes in Australia. Peaky, sure, but not in a bad-for-learners-way. They're not as hard-edged as a bigger sportbike either, but you wouldn't know that.

650's are a good option as far as first bikes are concerned, sure, but they're not the only option like you're making out. 250's exist for a reason, and not just because of licensing restrictions either.

Sure.

You can either cut the "mode switch" wire on the loom (good luck removing a pin from the harness that shit was hard) which will swap the stock ECU over to the the "B" mode which is full power.

Or pick up a 17GC0 ECU from american eBay, just make sure it DOESN'T come from california.

ok im gonna make you think real hard here.
take a waterbottle, set it in front of you. now shove the bottom of it to the left, it just fell to the right.
now with that in mind..
think back to a wheelbarrow if you ever lifted a finger in labor, how do you turn a wheel barrow in forward motion? you lean it, the round profile of the tire makes it start to climb, which on flat groune translated into turning in the direction it leans. bikes do the same thing.
when you turn the bars left(to knock the bike over to the right) the natural course for the bike with round tires is to climb, the farther it leans the harder it climbs on the side.
so if you add speed the natural course is that the bike will corner when leaned and will naturally balance itself upright at speed.
>>
>>14683502
But if you push left you're gonna go right

>>14683380
Isn't your mate pete? I watched his video on the 1190sx

>>14683439
Depending on how old it is stainless steel brake lines aren't bad, and it's like 80 bucks to add sonic springs in the front forks so they don't dive while braking. Other than making sure it's mechanically fine that's about it. I added in a rear shock from a Suzuki Katana for $25 that helped the ride in addition to the front springs.

Other than that look for soft saddle bags. I strapped my back packing backpack on this time but I'm still looking for some bags that will work. There isn't any real support for this bike in terms of luggage racks. I spent a little extra money ($300) to make it a nicer bike to ride because I knew that I would be with it for a couple years before I could sell it.

You countersteer literally every bike to initiate and maintain a lean.

In order to turn any motorcycle, big or small, you have to countersteer. There is literally no other way to turn.

Even hands off the bar and just leaning causes the head to countersteer to initate the bike leaning.

>>14683711
>Me and my /sick ass/ goldwing beg to differ

All that you are telling us is you fundamentally do not understand motorcycle handling dynamics.

Just because you don't conciously do it or aren't aware that you do it, doesn't mean anything.

Unless your goldwing is a gay ass trike, you countersteer to turn the thing..

>>
>>14683568
But the bike turns left. Countersteering.

Basically
>push left
>Wheel turns right
>Front end goes right
>Inertia of the bike pushes bike forward over wheel which is sideways up front
>this causes bike to keel over to left
>Front end then countersteers and front wheel turns to the left to balance out the bike and help it hold lean angle
>this results in turning to the left
It's convoluted and a pain in the dick to explain but the reality that it's push left to go left and push right to go right.

Yes, it's just much less noticeable at lower speeds. If you didn't countersteer then you'd lean left and fall over on the left side.
>>
>>14683775
As soon as you're rolling enough for gyro effect to feel steady, yes.
>>
do the anons who don't understand countersteer not know how to bicycle? because that's where it first applies

Pretty sure they're trolling

Does it work with bicycles as well and mopeds

Better way to explain:
The Gyroscopic principle of Precession dictates that a force acted on a gyroscope (your front wheel in this case) is felt 90° down turn (as illustrated). Therefore if you push on the left handlebar, as would apply force in the yellow arrow, the would translate to the wheel leaning left, putting you in a left turn.
So yes, leaning the bike does make it turn, but your body weight is insufficient to overcome the gyroscopic rigidity from the wheels, at least enough to get you through the twistys.

So if you want to turn left you push the left handle bar so technically your wheel I going right but yet you're turning left.... What kind of kraut space magic is this

I understand that. Just why the fuck would you set it up like that? What benefits are there for doing it?

More rotor surface area maybe? Idk

But that's only part of the story. The gyroscopic effect is pretty weak compared to the rotational moment of the bike front to rear.

Imagine a line starting at the front of the bike, passing through the bikes center of gravity to the back. The bikes lean rotates about this axis.

Now imagine the wheels as a lever acting on this axis. The contact patch is where force is input to cause the bike to rotate about this axis.

Imagine said bike rolling down the road. You push on the right lever which steers the wheel to the right, this imparts a force on the motorcycle about it's axis. The lever is a line drawn from the front wheel contact patch to the centerline axial axis

You push right which causes the wheel to steer to the left, this wheel steering to the left causes the bike to rotate about it's axial axis and lean in the direction of the bar that you pressed. In this example you push the right bar and the bike leans to the right.

A simple way to think of it is when you push the bar on a given side you are steering the bottom of the bike out from under you to the outside of the turn opposite of the bar that you push.

Cleaner look, more leverage due to more swept area because of the larger disks, it's different.
>>
>>14683852
being mounted to the rim instead of the hub makes them more effective than a normal disc which is connected closer to the center, think about leverage, it's like making the spanner longer etc.

Doing this means they can run one disc, combined with eriks autism in wheel design (hubless) + an 8 pot caliper that makes the unsprung weight of the front wheel far lighter than a dual brembo set up with a hub, which makes the suspension work better and reduces the gyroscopic effect of the wheel making it turn faster.

According to EBR it saved 3kg of unsprung mass from the front wheel and provides similar braking performance to dual discs setup in a normal fashion.

Decent helmet if you get it for a good price.

Don't listen to brand haters. Icon has annoying advertising and designs sometimes but their gear is good.

>>14683880
my bad just remembered only the rear wheel is hubless.
