Because Detroit have done their business so lousy for decades that they've lost the passenger car market to foreign competition, so in order to save themselves they've banded together with the federal government, created favorable legislation for pickup trucks with cargo hatches, and convinced the public that it's impossible to live suburban life without a four wheel drive SUV.

No idea why American's don't like wagons.

A Magnum SRT/8 is a pretty car to look at. Interior is crap, and I wouldn't own one again, but it did turn heads.

I like and have owned a few E39 and E61 wagons, and am working on picking up a 2003 Passat W8 wagon.

Yes, I'm aware of the W8 problems. I have a spare longblock and transmission in storage already.

Automakers don't want to sell wagons in the US since they count as "cars" and so have tighter fuel economy regulations, whereas if they just jack them up a bit they're "trucks" and are more loosely regulated.
>>
>>14678522
Then you're shit out of luck, the best handling SUVs you're going to find are Range Rovers or maybe Escalades.
>>
>>14678542
Yeah, which is why wagons are a good thing and have every reason to exist. Unlike some people on this thread, I'm not saying SUVs are terrible and should stop existing, but you have to admit that the Golf Gti and Focus ST estates would be a couple of nice little editions to the US market.

EU never got the base 300, only the 300C and our 300's were assembled by Magna SXteyr in Austria. Mine in the pic for example has a 3 litre turbo diesel engine made by Benz.

I love the car, would never give a second thought if I had to pick between this one or a Benz wagon. THe interior space is just ridiculous, even though the interior looks vomit inducing

Why yurocucks don`t like fun?
>>
>>14679562
But we do, the fuck you on about?
>>
>>14678665
Yes. Handling, and fuel economy.

Because it's not a fuckbarge like SUV's are, it can make better use of available torque and wastes less fuel

Because it's not a topheavy fuckbarge, it handles better and is much less likely to roll over

If you need to haul people or may need lots of space more often than not, a Minivan is perfect for what you need as it's designed to be roadgoing instead of being a topheavy memebarge

If you need a vehicle that can get good mileage while still being practical enough to carry 4 people and cargo or 2 people and lots of cargo, but still being as economic and the width and height of a sedan, the wagon is king.

What are modern SUV's good at? Maybe cargo space and towing, but they fail at everything else.

And no, I'm not European, I'm as American as can be, I just really hate what the SUV has become.

Handling probably isn't the best word here, but roadholding, road feel, steering feel, responsiveness, lower center of gravity, less likelihood of tipping, etc. are all major factors that contribute to a safer (objective) and better (subjective) driving experience.

Timing chains and timing belts are simply two different ways of linking the crankshaft and camshaft(s) together to keep them in time. With chains they last the life of the engine, usually, but if they fail it's a bigger pain in the ass to change them. Belts have to be changed every 100k or so but are lighter and less complicated. Belts are also much quieter than chains.
>>
>>14682917
keep in mind "lifetime of the engine" can also mean different things to different manufacturers
it seems like most german manufacturers these days don't care about anything past 100k

Because to the generation ahead of mine they were effectively mini vans. Now to my generation they're fine because they've been replaced by the crossover segment, the new mom car. No, seriously google mom car and see what comes up.
But because of the stupid cafe laws we'll never get them back, because suvs are more cost effective to produce because they can be classified as a light truck and not a car that has stricter fuel economy regulation. >makes better use of available torque
But SUVs typically have big v8s which produce so much more torque that it doesn't matter if they use it as efficiently.
>minivans
I agree, I fucking love minivans and 90% of the people on the road driving SUVs could be driving minivans instead with no loss of functionality.
>SUVs are only good at cargo space and towing
If I'm not building a drag racer, cargo and space are my primary concerns when I shoo for cars

Having had a wagon and an SUV and a pickup, I can honestly vouch that the covered cargo area is not that great in the end. The interior storage is nice and good for say a road trip while towing a trailer, as there is plenty of room for friends, food, a couple dogs and more. The wagon definitely lacks as much interior space and towing capacity, and pickups have even less interior space.
Big part of the utility of a truck isn't just it going off road and towing stuff, but throwing stuff into it. Doors, smaller appliances, plywood, lumber, drywall all goes well in an SUV, but when it comes to loose things like firewood, gravel, mulch &c, it's a major mess in an SUV.
I found the ground clearance of my SUV was not that much help in the snow and ice, I lived on a fairly steep road that would get packed down to ice very fast, and the truck only had RWD.
It was the only thing that could climb the street without the road getting plowed as the sheer weight of it crushed the ice and it climbed up without a problem. I never actually had a problem and used it to go skiing with friends and such and remained unstuck in storms that pinned their AWD cars, while I just sunk to the road in the snow and it happily plowed out everything in front of it.
For casual drives though, they do care about handling. Drive an old SUV and compare it to a new one, the new one is far more comfortable and handles very much like a stereotypical american car, while older ones really show their truck basis. The SUV is nice, I loved mine and they have their place, but for a lot of people they fill a fairly minor niche. They're a decent all rounder if you need an all rounder that is more than a car base, but they don't exactly excel at any one thing.
Crossovers are definitely killing their advantages though, trying to be SUVs and usually lacking body on frame, so the better durability and ruggedness isn't really going to be there, and any body damage is going to be pretty serious.

They aren't sold because americans in general don't buy them. Yuros need to get 50 mpg because fuel is like 100 bongs/crumpet or some shit so they all drive 1L turbo diesles shitheaps that are slow as fuck and sound like wet ass. Americans are fucking poor and gas here is cheap so we can afford to drive things that don't suck.

Crossovers are fucking hideous though. As far as gravel and loose shit go, you can tow a trailer on the back of your SUV if you find yourself doing a lot of that stuff.
I think the all arounder factor is a big part of their draw. Rather than paying for upkeep and insurance on a pickup that you don't drive regularly most people would just rather have a DD that they can do most truck stuff with.

Actually, >>14692374 is right.

The Passat and A4 Avant are the same platform.

With the exception the B5.5 Passat. I think Audi jumped to the B6 sooner, and there was no B5.5 A4.
