I had one for almost 3 years. Bought it with 97k miles. Run like a charm, the only time it was in the shop, was for the general maintenance (oil, brake, headlight fluid). Great car. If I hadn't lost my job, I would of kept it. Very Sad!

could be better. on the S models I believe they switched over to electromagnetic steering with the facelifted models so they feel pretty disconnected from the road. so look into that if thats a concern of yours. of course the prefacelift B8 S5s came with the 4.2 NA V8 so you may be stuck between a rock and a hard place with that considering the 3.0 V6 in the facelift models is a lot more tuneable (if youre looking to go down that road, otherwise if youre keeping it stock the V8 is a great motor).

besides that, make sure you get the sport differential option. thats honestly half the reason to get an S model. because if you dont get that then the only real difference between you and a stage 3 a4 like the black one in my pic will be the fact that your car is about a half second to a second slower in the 1/4 and you have a cooler steering wheel.

The interior honestly makes up for a lot. Test drive an S5 to see if you can live with the steering. Then test drive a 335i to see if better road feel is worth the tradeoff. I don't know what else you're looking at but everything is going to end up being a compromise one way or another. The sports diff I mentioned helps a lot but there's still no physical connection to the road and you can feel it.

Also there's no manual option on the new B9s coming out next year. Like, at all. So don't hold out for that. Totally scrapped for the US in both A and S models.

Older audis are OK. Some models are reliable, some have their problems, but overall not hard to fix. They are not worth the money vw asks for them. If you don't buy your audi used, you are a dumb bitch and deserve being ripped off.

Newer a4 are stuffed with vw trash technology, this shit will fail and cost you more than it should. Newer models are also harder to service. The design is utterly boring, there is no moder audi that i find even slightly interesting to look at. Their interiour is dogshit, but still overpriced.
Oh and, buying an audi in america is just plain stupid. You have so many great cars that are cheaper to service, get them and stop living the "grass is greener on the other side" meme.
