sup guise -

need some advice cuz i heard something the other day and wanted to get some confirmation.

basically i got a big ol' promotion at work but the commute to my new location is 11 miles one way.

want to get a cheap reliable small bike for commuting (cruiser style, the street bike stance was never comfortable to me)

was thinking about just getting a good ol' honda rebel. they are cheap and all over craigslist and fuck.....its a honda. cant really get more reliable than that.

however my boys at work were tellin me how they think the rebel is a turd. that its kinda slow to get up to commuting speed, etc. that my 49cc 2 stroke yamaha zuma that i dick around on for fun would actually beat it in a race from the line.....lol?

are they just fuckin wit me? is the rebel really THAT slow?

Also for a guy 6ft1 is would the rebel for comfy enough - does the rebel have any known major running issues?

Thanks for the advice. Im either gonna get a rebel 250 or a ninja 250 but again, i dont like the street bike stance for commuting.
>>
>>14666767

The Rebel tops out at like 70mph.

It's 125cc slow, with none of the benefits of a 125.

>street bike stance

Ninja 250's are practically upright.
>>
>>14666781

Try harder or cut it and replace it with a new piece of hose.

im 24, i was studying for a while, then driving a tesla cab to get some money, now im in training again. should be done in 1.5 years
>>
>>14666793
This is pretty accurate

Honda CBR250s and Kawasaki Ninja 250s are just as easy and cheap and have upright riding positions, and you won't be slow as fuck but you'll still get good mpgs and have way more fun than on a rebel
>>
>>14666804
Just as easy to find I mean
>>
aight guys hey! thanks for the responses and now being dicks about it. im curious about what you're saying about having the speed of a 125 but not the benefits?

do you just mean cheaper to run/own, or does it have a better powerband? im needing a 4 stroke cuz 2 strokes out here get EATEN up. i live in AZ where it gets 115 outside for 3 months straight and that time is coming up.
>>
>>14666813
It's nowhere near as light as most 125's, so it doesn't handle anywhere near as good or is anywhere near as flickable.

Plus 125's get retarded good fuel economy.
>>
*not being dicks, kek

For commuting get like a Ybr or a Honda cg you won't go wrong.

You're not on /a/, dummy. Most people on /dbt/ aren't into anime I think.

Anyway, if your commute includes going on the highway you might want something with around 250 cc at least so you don't hold up traffic trying to merge. 250s still get really good mileage.

Just make sure it's a good one. You don't want your engine detonating between your legs when it's spinning at 16000rpm.

I had one and it was good. Bit hard to find some parts and tyres are pricey but it's very comfortable and much faster than any of the modern 250's. Shouldn't depreciate at all either. I'd consider the cb400 revo too.

Attach some bits of scrap metal to a string and tie it to the back of your bike so they drag on the ground when you ride. Same effect and will also deter tailgating.

They sound pretty awesome to me. There's also the added bonus of attention whores no longer wanting to ride. The entire culture will be full of people who truly enjoy it. I hope that it's similar to early Japanese sportbike culture, minus the attention from police.

I keep forgetting to ask this. Something keeps gathering twigs and leaves under my bike shelter (it's not the wind, they're pushed into a pile). When I lift the cover it smells like a stable. Any ideas what it could be? I'm guessing it's not tiny horses.

Probably a possum or skunk.

Might wanna check your bike for damage. It might be rats and those assholes chew wires and any rubber parts, but if it's outside I doubt it'll be anything other than a possum or skunk.

They were the only ones available. Touratech went from saying they'd deliver in the second week of Feb to sometime mid March or possible June. I don't understand how it takes so long to bend a piece of stainless steel pipe.

So I can rev the engine at the lights and accidentally go hurtling into traffic.

>>14667828
There are a few of them poking around. Is there anything foxes hate the smell of?
>>
How do you slip the clutch on a dct bike? Seems unintuitive to do slow speed shit by just slightly moving the throttle.
>>
>>14667834
It's actually really easy. You basically feather the throttle like you would the clutch on a manual or wind it open a bit more to fully engage it. I can proceed at as little as 3mph without having to wobble the bars around or put either foot down. In theory, you can even do wheelies.

I understand you don't really care what people think and you probably are enjoying yourself, but what made you choose it over a manual? Do you care that you can't bump start it?
>>

>implying anyone can enjoy themselves on anything but a turbo Busa

kek
>>
>>14667867
To be honest, I probably couldn't bump start the manual version. I went with DCT because I use my bike as a commuter-tourer and there's a lot of situations on my route home where I can't lane split/overtake so the DCT makes it easier. It's particularly nice in winter to be able to stop and keep your whole hand on the heated grip while being ready to go.

I'm going to look at an 83 xj650. No idea what to look for. Says it needs a bit of tlc, need to put a little fuel in cylinder to get out started if it say to long. And the choke is broken and missing battery cover. $1200, 50k kms. Thoughts? What do I look for when inspecting it?

Do other people's bikes really have to rev that high to go fast? I honestly don't see the point in going past 4k rpms. Seems like a waste of gas and pointlessly viby rides when that's enough to get my bike to highway speeds.

I don't know m8 this is my first bike so I have nothing to compare it to.

On the count that you're not trolling take a look at this graph. It explains itself. And what bike do you have where you rev that low and make power?

Also notice how the gay V configuration Ducati makes its power lower in the range.

Hey /dbt/

How do I get a rock hard brake lever.

I have a brembo radial MC and monoblock calipers, you would think I would have a harder lever than this mush shit for the first ~1" of lever travel.

I did a through bleed with 5.1 Motul and it firmed it up a little bit but still not as hard as the new bikes at the dealer. Bike has good braking power but is missing a bit of initial bike. Probably going to put in EBC HH pads.

The same story with the rear but worse. The rear used to be firm as fuck and just a bit of pressure with almost no travel would lock up the rear. Now it feels like I'm going through a good three inches of travel before the rear end will start to lock up. I bled and flushed with new Motul 5.1 at the same time and it didn't help much. Before I put the bike away for winter the pedal was perfect and firm as shit. not sure what happened.

An anon suggested zip tieing the lever overnight so I did that yesterday, I'll see if it made an improvement when I get home from work.

Thoughts?

My bike cruises at ~8krpm in 6th gear at 75mph with the regear. Before that it was at about 7000-7500rpm.

Cruising at 4krpm in top gear is like 40mph for my bike.

My bike also redlines at 16,000rpm, makes peak torque at around 9,000-10,000rpm (~45lb-ft), and makes peak power at just below 15,000rpm (~110whp).

Different types of motors.

At 8000-10000rpm the bike has enough power in top gear to out accelerate pretty much any car on the road other than some exceptionally fast vehicles. Past 10,000 rpm is where hyperspeed happens.

You can't ride every bike like it has a lazy twin in a beginner bike. Some motors are high strung because they make tons of power for their displacement. Usually the race replica bikes (supersports, superbikes).

I owned an SP2 RC51.

They are neat and sound tits but they are pretty horrible bikes to own.

>seeps oil from every mating surface
>constantly shaking itself apart
>water pump failures are major issue
>overheating is major issue due to terrible radiator placement
>coils fail
>heavy as sin
>uncomfortable as fuck, even by aggressive superbike standards
>heavy engine braking + no slipper clutch eats up the rear tire constantly without perfect downshifts.
>heavy bike + torque eats up the rear tire constantly.

Imagine a Honda with almost Ducati tier (lack of) build quality and constant issues that have to be addressed.

I owned it for about two years and had the fairings off it working on it longer than I actually had it on the road riding it. Had an intermittent issue where the rear cyc\linder would just stop firing for no apparent reason, even after coils, plugs, wires were replaced. I knew it was getting fuel because it would start flaming out the tailpipes, lel.

Tons of 'character' and sounded awesome with my Two Bros exhaust but a pretty terrible ownership experience.
