What competitors?

wait wtf how is that car 2100lbs?!?!

that's lighter than gen1 and 2

Using more aluminum instead of iron and steel.

why aren't these cars more popular? (besides that strange front...)
Is the handling characteristic bad? Must research!

very underrated and looks good with a hard top.

Just looked at different builds, 2ZZ swaps, turbo kits, etc etc.
Too bad the base price is so much higher than an NB miata.

Also the trunk/frunk space is abysmal compared to the SW20 and AW11
>>
>>14659292
A 986-gen Boxster will drive circles around an MR2, and 986-gen Boxsters can be picked up for cheap now.
>>
>>14661033
A 986 with decent km is still 33k, and the early IMS issues makes it a money pit in waiting.

Pick up an MR-S for 13k and drop a 2zz in it and you'll have a car that's lighter, faster, 10k+ cheaper and you'll be able to drive it forever.

The boxster s is sexier though.

compared to the elise? cheap to buy and own.
compared to the boxster? slow but cheap to run.
>>
>>14661093
>33k for a first gen Boxster
Where on earth do you live?

>IMS
Not an issue in higher mileage cars that weren't garage queens. Drive them hard and they'll be more reliable in that regard
Things that I'd take into consideration are replacing headgaskets and changing the water pump and oil separator before they fail
>>
>>14661033
Another pro for the Boxster is the sheer amount of trunk space it has. You just gotta do preventative maintenance and they make great daily drivers
>>
>>14661145
Straya. Luxury euro car tax fucks us. People still try selling old 911's for 65k.
>>
>>14659449
Never understood this, these start at $700 in the UK, they're one of the cheapest entry level sports cars.
>>
>>14661162
Jeez I've heard about how expensive kangaroo land is.
My Boxster is probably worth like $5k in the US, and I can get a Cayman S or a 996 C4S for 33k here. Couple thousand more and a 996 Turbo is an option too

But those old air-cooled 911s are expensive everywhere now, can't find one for under $40k

In the US they sit between AW11 and SW20

I used to drive a Corolla with the 1zz and it's an OK engine. Great for commuting and shit but I think Toyota really dropped the ball by not offering a 2zz trim for the MR-S.
>>
>>14661197
Blame Lotus. There's a rumour that there was some kind of binding contract that prevented Toyota from putting a 2zz in a mid-engine design.
>>
>>14661231
Lotus was scared that an MR2 might put them out of business?
>>
>>14661259
Only the exige had the 2zz, a base trim, lightweight mid-engine toyota having the same engine in a car more than double its price would take away both the uniqueness of the exige, and make people wonder why the elise was so lacking.
>>
>>14661093
> 13k

10k or less probably if you are looking in the right places
>>
>>14659292
It's a poor man's Boxster, but also way cheaper and easier to maintain than other MR layout cars of the era.

It's fucking gay, stop being a poor Cuck and buy a Porsche

Looks in good shape, since there's a fuckton of neglected NC miatas in chilangoland for sale around the same price.

A Boxster is a hairdresser's car, no matter what price you pay for it.
>>
>>14664962
Only bus riders say this

>X is a hair dresser's car
>Y is a secretary's car
You know what those people actually drive? Toyota Corollas
>>
>look them up online locally out of curosity
>most say manual transmission
>it's almost always pic related

They must have sold a lot of these "manuals".
>>
>>14664970
but it is a hairdresser's car. if you're a fashionhead, would you rather be seen in a toyota or a so cute, omg! porsche by your clientele?

as much as a truck is redneck's car, a corolla is for people with sense or a bus is for people who live in the middle of the city or japanese people.

If I recall correctly, that specific transmission setup is a hydraulic actuated clutch in a sequential gearbox fashion. Similar to Ferrari's F1 transmission. Pretty cool actually. No third pedal, but if you don't shift it won't shift. So not really a manual, but pretty sporty none the less.

>>14664978

they respond exceptionally well to engine swaps

i think the most popular ones are the T-sport Celica engines and I think I seen a K20 swap on Best Motoring that absolutely raped everything.

IIRC the k20 mr-s actually completely trashed a load of turbo S13/S14s
>>
>>14665206
It's actually annoying. It's got a few of the advantages of manual, and a whole lot of disadvantages.
Namely, it's SLOW. Gears do not change smoothly. You hit the shift stick, you wait a while, then it kicks in. With a manual, the speed of your shifting determines how long of a split second you stay in neutral with the clutch in, and you are in control of the exact timing, you know when the gear catches. With SMT you have no idea when the car will actually shift. You'll start coasting for an indeterminate amount of time, because for whatever reason the gears shift at dramatically different times all the fucking time. It's legit random. Even in casual driving
>turn a corner in 2nd, bring up the speed a little, shift to 3rd.
>Nope. Slowing down. Gear kicks in a full 3 seconds later, your passenger gets their head thrown back, car shudders for a second from being too slow for the gear, you're now making progress again.

The SMT also doesn't have anything preventing rollback, and the lack of a clutch makes stop and go traffic on a hill a chore. You'd think it would be good without a clutch, but you're wrong. Instead the clutch is kinda worked into the gas pedal. In a manual, you know exactly where the biting point of the clutch is, and how many revs to give the car on a hill, in the SMT it's isn't a fixed point. It's wherever there is a compromise between the clutch and the acceleration. You're left with a gas pedal that is wildly inconsistent with how much you should press it to keep the car moving.
The smt also likes to put itself into neutral if you wait too long, at the most inconvenient times, and you have to put the car out of gear, then back in it to go. (Which sometimes lags and takes a while, while you're sitting there revving the engine up)

I find myself hand braking all the time and deliberately putting it in neutral before the car can get the chance to fuck me in traffic.

You feel like a shit driver, and it's completely out of your control.

huh, well now I'm glad my father went with a Mazda Speed Miata after all. It's funny because those symptoms sounds almost like tiptronic systems.

It's kinda worth it to fly down a twisty road in a mid engine car though, you just end up wishing it had more appeal for driving super casually. Driving by yourself makes it less of a chore if you don't mind hitting the acceleration and playing around.
