Your fuel pressure regulator may be going, or possibly cam/crank sensors, engine temp sensor. It's not difficult to ohm test the sensors, just takes time

Did you check the spark plugs? Had a similar problem with a bmw. Turs out they're picky about certain brand and parts. I had to get single electrode iridium btw.

If the engine idles and revs well without being in gear, then it's something related to the gearbox anon. The engine sounds absolutely fine.

Do a code test right now and get back to us. If it comes back with nothing, it's something to do with the gearbox.

Whoever serviced the gearbox must have fucked up somehow.

Its these super high powered (has a warning lable on it) plugs, you know what im talking about, they have not been replaced but Ive done a hot compression test and thats how i determined #6 cyl needed a new fuel injector, now its straight across the board.

Heres the brass tacks: we had the transmission and my mom ran it hot and melted O-ring, so I had a guy mechanic that has a lot of exp to flush it out. put the trans back in well its leaking again. So I got all the parts orings seals etc, we had another (ASE) mech rep the rear, front seal..... Still Leaking!!!

Then took trans back out took it to yet another guy who had over 25 yr trans exp and he replaced every single seal and o-ring. We put it back it in, not leaking.....

Im so fed up with it at this point, it runs great cold and I know i am -so- close to resolving this...

If it starts and idles fine in neutral or park but it dies when you put it in drive or reverse the transmission is causing the issue

Torque converter is putting too much load on the engine. Shift solenoids are a real possibility fin this case.

This. If you put in fresh fuel, it has compression, runs well hot and cold, cleaned injectors, all sensors from maf to temp sensors are good, no vac leaks, there's a transmission related issue then.

Double check everything is hooked up correctly, any vac lines for the transmission, verify they're all in working order. Do your rear wheels spin freely with the car in park/neutral and off the ground? Highly unlikely but the driveshaft, diff and axle in working order, nothing's bound up or fucked? If double checking everything leaves you high and dry, I'd be on the phone talking to the guy who rebuilt your transmission, see what he thinks.

Asking the obvious, will the car idle in gear? You've tried all options, 1, 2, 3, D, R? If it idles in gear, can you leave from a stop very slowly applying light throttle, will the car move at all or die? Can you mash the gas in gear or dies it still die?


How is it dying, does it shudder and stall, bog and die, or is it cutting out like you turned off the ignition? ECU/ignition/wiring aren't damaged?


Just shooting you ideas, maybe something got overlooked, never hurts to double or triple check when things haven't resolved.

Alright guys, I did the stomp test. The check engine light stays solid for a couple seconds then goes off, then comes back on for 1 second, then cycles. it's been doing this for the last 5 minutes.

I should also mention that during running the car, the check engine light is not on

Is that why its not giving any codes?

Also on the O2 sensor, I noticed some idiot spliced the wire harness for it instead of unplugging it from the connector. Could this be an contributing issue?

the torque converter / transmission problem is the best explanation i've seen in this thread. do a manual swap dude.

My assumption would be that it's idle control related - when it's on the cold (fast) idle, it's running fast enough that it can shift into drive without stalling. When the engine warms up and it transitions to hot (slow) idle, it's now going slow enough to stall.

Alternatively, possibly the torque converter lockup is sticking. I don't know if you can disable it on a beemer like you can on a chebby by just disconnecting one wire, but that's something you can figure out for yourself.


OP, if you hold the throttle open enough to raise the RPM a couple hundred, does it still stall on shifting?
