Thoughts on the suzuki samurai? Can get them for pretty cheap and I was thinking about adding a true beater to my line-up. Cars you don't give a shit about fucking up are the best cars.

Oh ok.
>>
>>14646136
What year? Xterra wouldn't be my choice but its a decent offroader.
>>
>>14646151
2008. For the mileage and cost it's the best option. A 4Runner would be my preference but the prices are out of control. I like FJs but an Xterra is roomy enough to sleep in back of for cold nights.

Xterras seem to be reliable except for the timing chain tensioner and SMOD issue. Getting a six speed to avoid spending 7k on a new tranny.
>>
>>14646172
the 4runner is definitely better but im with you the resale value on them is absolutely retarded. 08 seems like a pretty good year and xterras are fairly reliable. any mod plans?
>>
>>14646315
Probably a fresh set of tires as big as I can fit. Melt the wheel wells out of the way. Winch bumper and maybe some lights eventually. Maybe some wheels. Nothing too wild. I live in Utah so not having a 4x4 is seriously limiting.

3rd gen 4Runner guy here, I had the biggest shit eating grin on my face when I test drove a 6spd pro 4X Xterra this fall. Dat short shift. Dem torques.

The suspension setup left me cold, I can't believe how soft the setup is in the rear, I can see why many people immediately add a leaf or two to right that wrong. Cargo space is also unfortunately a bit less than what I've become used to. But I still lust after a low mile used Pro-4X. Their poor resale makes them a total bargain compared to 5th gen 4Runners, which may as well be a different class of vehicle at this point in terms of size/cost.

my 3rd gen a few weeks ago down in Brown Co. Indiana. Mostly just super tame graded gravel with a few minor washouts that a 2wd truck or crossover would walk right over, but I've been discovering a few unmaintained sections that get nice and muddy in the spring. Thunderstorms also lead to some pretty interesting situations with flash flooding:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTneGPG2ZrM

Looking forward to going back to some of the newly discovered spots with a few buddies of mine (2 3rd gen 4Runners, and a 2.5gen Motnero)

I'm super jealous of you guys out West/Southwest, we simply don't have that kind of wilderness and number of remote trails, or that kind of scenery for that matter.

Have a quick sort of related question. I have a 2000 TJ and just found out the shocks are worn out and the coil springs are starting to sag.

Replacement stock springs and shocks will cost me around 800$ CAD, but I was looking around and found a complete kit from OME that will give me a 2 inch raise for around 940$ USD (about 1250$ CAD atm).

So I was wondering if i should just save for a bit more for the kit or just get stock stuff.

I wasn't really planning on doing a lift. Not a huge fan of the look but I could probably handle 2".

Thanks man. It's amazing terrain and the XJ has been the perfect combo of enough space for passengers and gear, but short enough wheelbase and size to go where other 4WD's have problems.
4.5 inches on 31" has been great, but currently upgrading to a long-arm suspension up front, ARB lockers front and back, and re-gearing for 33". At that point I will consider it done. New additional build will be ready for the next trip to the desert on the 30th for 10 days of exploring!

The 6 speed is sweet. I haven't had a manual since my Acura Integra got stolen. I was used to the 5 speed in that and now I have to remind myself to shift into that final gear on the freeway.

I'm not used to driving a short wheelbase SUV for sure. It doesn't feel really planted compared to a longbed truck and more squishy than my IS300 (surprise!). It's sweet as hell when I hit all the potholes and divots I'm used ot swerving around and barely notice them though. Lotta tire meat to absorb that impact.

Went to some local light-medium trails the last two days with some buddies. We had tons of fun. didn't get many pictures, but I thought this one was pretty cool looking.
I just got the jeep not long ago, but I plan on doing all the typical upgrades over summer when I can make more money, and I've already got the lift in the mail. My buddy's rigis a suzuki xl7, and even with bald street tires and moderately low clearance, had almost no issue going where some of the other lifted yotas and wranglers went

My bro has an XL7 with Cooper AT3s and manual hubs, stock aside from that. It continues to impress me every time we take it out. My 3g 4Runner has a ton more clearance, better articulation, and a locking rear diff but if I'm honest for the medium/lighter trails it makes no difference, and his XL7 can eke out like 25mpg and is a much more stable vehicle on the road.

His is an '02. It's treated him okay, he recently had to replace the timing chain guides/tensioner on his 2.7Lv6, a brutal 10 hr job that would have cost a fortune if he wasn't a mechanic himself and doing his own work. Aside from that it's been a front wheel bearing, and some annoying issue with balancing the driveshaft. It uses a CV joint instead of a u joint so it's basically impossible to rebuild the way you normally would.

I agree, they're a great budget platform and their small size and low cost actually makes them more fun that some overbuilt expensive monster.

Since this seems to be an appropriate thread, I'll post here.

I'm trying to learn to tackle off-roading in 4L with my vehicle, which has a manual transmission. I don't have a stupid low crawl ratio as many others do, but there are situations when leaving it in 1st gear is still too fast.

So how do I tackle these situations without riding the clutch? If it's fully engaged, I lose fine control, but leaving it partially engaged will fuck it up. I don't think I need to spend beaucoup bucks for regearing just to crawl slower without burning the clutch.
>>
>>14672128
Just curious, any idea what your low range reduction is?
>>
>>14672133
2.72:1
But I don't think upgrading the transfer case would be any cheaper than re-gearing the axles
>>
>>14672249
That should more than short enough to crawl most things with the clutch fully engaged. I find simply idling up to what ever I'm trying to traverse and loading up the throttle as needed without exceeding 1000rpm never has me feeling as though I'm going too fast.
I'd say just keep practicing and get some more experience under belt :)
>>
>>14672128
>So how do I tackle these situations without riding the clutch?
By not driving through shit your car is not suited to. Choose your path more carefully.

>>14672249
This is pretty low. Although I can see it being a problem if your engine cannot into torque at low rpms.
>>
I'm putting an LS in my toyota pickup and need some full size axles because the transfer cases on these 4L60e transmissions are all driver side drop and all the yota axles are passenger side drop, what's a good/cheap/abundant set of axles I can get that will work fur this?
If I can't find anything too cheap I'm just gonna say fuck it and turn it into a 2WD truck and the front axle will just be dead weight.
>>
>>14672409
Why not utilise the factory Hilux transfer with an adapter to bolt up the 4L60?

This is from an Ausfaggot website, but you get the idea.
Saves a hell of a lot of re-engineering and alignment issues.
>>
Adapter either doesn't exist or is expensive as all fucking hell.
I think I found one fur like 700 dollars or something when I looked, I can get beast full size axles fur that much desu.
Also, LS is about 350hp vs the stock 22r which is around 90, shit will probably explode.

Just a suggestion, but you're quickly going to find re-engineering the whole drivetrain is going to be a damn sight more expensive than the initial purchase prices you're mentioning, and I'll wager you're going to suffer your fair share of trial and error failures.

I'm not scared to rip out everything toyota either, I'm not a purist like that I don't give a flying fuck if it's not a true toyota lol.
I just want it to be beast.
>>
>>14672484
Don't really care about purism either.
Good luck to you, but I think you're severely underestimating how involving and precise drivetrain conversions are.
Keep that tripfaggot Burbalade in mind, and his SAF conversion that so far has taken 5 years with yet no result.
>>
>>14672507
might just say fuck it and go 2wd but it would feel super gay to have a 2wd 4x4 toyota pickup with that front axle being dead weight, just don't know what to do yet.
:/
>>
>>14672519
I'm still sure you can find a US local built transfer adapter kit for a better price.
8" Yota axles can be (and often are) built to cope with SBC conversions, so I don't see why an LSx wouldn't work. And while adding to cost of the project, it'll be a damn sight easier, cheaper and and trouble free over all getting it back on the road while removing the guess work.
Just google all the V8 powered Hiluxs, 4Runners and pick-ups and see how they've been setup. It's been done many times before.

What's the point in selling it if it upsets you?

And why the fuck does every xj owner leave those rear bumper cap brackets attached? I just drilled out the rivets and took it off. Ended up trimming the bracket and the bumper cap then putting them back on to make the corners look nice.

Also, got the other side done and painted. Now on to cut and fold the rears.

Is it rock stable or does the spare tire waggle a bit?
>>

I see. But all the ones I see around here, and there are a LOT, they all just have the bracket.

An update on my progress. Took the final bumper cap off to start the rear trimming. Found pic related underneath. Pretty fucking surprising, and bullshit, because the rest of the Jeep is completely rust free. So the project is on hold until I can weld in new sheet metal. That's the right rear rocker btw.

$10k, I wouldn't pay that much but there's plenty of suckers in Colorado and it a pretty bitchin XJ.

>>
>>14671300

Since they brought this out its been pretty much done with the jap small SUV's. Everything has gone soft roader. Thank Nissan for starting that trend.

>take pathfinder, a medium sized, easy to maintain, capable off-road vehicle
>turn it into smaller, fwd, mom car that you can get stuck on dry Tarmac as it lifts 2 wheels in the air with the slightest undulation.

It's only when you go larger or smaller that you start getting good stuff again but even then you are running out of options.
>>
>>14678241
>running out of options

No. There are literally MILLIONS of wranglers, land cruisers, 4runners, and cherokees left in the world. You won't run out in your lifetime.

And buying new? The Tacoma is still there. Or gay shit like the renegade.
>>
best expedition vehicle? my vote goes to the land cruiser.

*Old* Land Cruiser and *old* Patrol.

J200 and Y62 are bloated 3-ton land yachts, and IIRC the Y62 Patrol has body and suspension that's built more like a Juke than like the old Patrol.

>>
>>14684580
Thought about this and the lc70 is probably the best modern vehicle for off roading
>>
What are your thoughts on a 99' pathfinder? I'm getting one within the next few months and I am wonder if they are any good for off roading. I've heard that they can be quite capable, but I'm more concerned with the costs of modifying the vehicle.
>>
If I wanted to go wheelin with my friends in their 4x4's, but I'm only RWD, and one has a winch, should I be fine if I don't get too reckless, or should I not even bother?
anything I could do to make it more viable? mean tires on the back? it's a stick shift, is that better or worse for off road?
>>
>>14686859
R50 pathfinder is worse for off-roading than both the original one and the later R51, it's got no frame, has a weaker suspension and is sometimes RWD only. And no diesel engines in the US, though that is a common problem. It's also harder to lift and mount protection and winches on. It's by no means bad, but if you want a base for a seriously riced off-roader, there are better options (e.g. gen2 montero)
>>
>>14684770
why Russian?
>>
>>14687039
Just stick to less extreme paths. Mud tires can help, on the front as well since that'll prevent the car from slipping, but that depends on terrain. Get one of your friends with a switchable transmission to drive in RWD mode in front of you, this way you'll know in advance whether something is impassable without AWD.

I don't have a choice with this vehicle sadly. Being given to me by a family member, but I do know that it is 4wd. I didn't know about any of these issues so thank you. I'm not going for too riced out, but enough to where I won't have any issues with deep snow and mud, considering the area I go with friends gets snow in the winter and will have at least a foot and a half of it until late April, and then after that will turn to equal amounts of mud with any amount of rain.
>>
>>14684341
and the tipping capability of a plastic cup
get that piece of shit out of my thread
>>
>>14686859
The #1 thing is to watch out for rust, these things are horrid as far as corrosion protection goes. There was a recall for rear trailing arms rusting off and/or front struts punching through sheetmetal IIRC.

>>14687331
I'd take an R50 over an R51 any day. better articulation in the rear with the solid rear axle, more compact and less weight, better angles.
>>
>>14684678

I think the big things are having a rear leaf spring pack that is rated to hold a decent amount of weight without bottoming out offroad. besides that, the XJ's only failing is perhaps a lack of interior space for cargo/people, but I'd say you could make it work. Put a skidplate or two on it if it doesn't already have some, and get some recovery gear. Forget about huge tires, what you've got on there looks like plenty.
