Just finally got my truck a week ago. Steal of the year. 03 F-150 4x4 with 156k and a five speed. Most solid frame I've seen on an old truck in Pa. Drives like its new. $1500

I'm sure your a cool guy op, but Ford is the only way to go. Nice truck though.

I've taken it across the country twice and treats me well.
I enjoy it's light modification but it's wide tires kill my power steering and ball joints occasionally but I think it's worth it lol

I don't really see anything wrong with jap trucks. If you like your truck and feel it suits your needs then there's nothing wrong. Someone's always gonna give you shit for truck no matter what you buy. Just the way most truck guys are.
>>
>>14650795
I like Japanese trucks. While not the titans of the auto industry, I feel like they have a stable hold with consumers that want a vehicle that's well rounded and majorically reliable. Additionally, their design and abundance of parts make their maintenance fairly easy. Finally, no one expect foreign markets seem to make small cabovers anymore, which is something that I really enjoy myself.

Going to be such a nicer ride to school than my TJ, which I'm still not sure what I want to do with yet.

Order is in. Now just have to wait the 6-8 weeks.

Decided to x-plan instead of negotiating to save on stress. So I'm down 5k from MSRP. Not very good I know, but usually not very good discounts on ordered vehicles. About 15% discount. I will also get any new incentives that come in after it has arrived.

Gem green supercab with the 8ft bed. Vinyl floors, 2.7 eco, power pack, tow package, running boards, side steps, and fogs.

Will be putting some 18in wheels from an '09 expedition with 33in cooper discovery A/T. I have not had any problems with them so far and will probably get the same thing in a smaller size when these wear out.

Gonna sell old truck private party so going to be stuck taking the bus for a while.

Looking to haul my sportsbikes and dirtbikes to tracks. Looking for double/crew cab, a big enough bed for 2 bikes, and a V6. It would be nice if it could fit in my garage, as well.

New Tacoma ($30k), new Frontier ($24k), new Colorado ($28k)?

Used 2009+ Ranger ($10k)?

Or do I just go Silverado for the same price of a mid-size, accepting the landbarge size and inability to fit in the garage?

In short

>sudden blown/flat tire without any pop

Long explanation

Truck suddenly started shaking pretty bad going about 60 it came off as I let off the gas approaching the exit...almost like a flat tire once under about 25mph it wasn't much to it....pulled over to inspect starting with tires then checked front end then under the hood(thought maybe blown out plug or exhaust manifold noise on interstate almost like loud exhaust) then started to look at back of wheels for breaks or something loose or raped up in the drive shaft...just happened to notice the shinny grease on the joint.
>>
>>14657530
Actually it happed because I put the u-joint in wrong 10k miles ago

Anyone here go from an older Toyota truck/SUV to a 2nd gen Tundra? I have a 3rd gen 4Runner that I really like, but the Tundra strikes me as a massive upgrade in road trip comfort and utility. Of course one option would be to keep the 4Runner AND buy a Tundra (and dispense with my 35mpg commuter) but that seems a bit irrational.

Extended. There is a reason reg cab is way cheaper - it sucks unless it is purely a work truck.

the 4l60 had no issues behind the v6, it did struggle with the 4.8s and 5.3s if you beat on them (i put 2 in my RCLB 5.3 in 120k miles of hard driving) but if you arent doing brake stands and burnouts, or slamming it into park/reverse while moving they are reliable, my 02 ECSB had 165k on the original 4l60 without any problems
>>
>>14658707
165k isn't a lot to these trucks though. Although that should be a testament to its durability. A guy rolled into my shop with a 2001 Sierra with almost 400k miles. Didn't know what was in it though.

the 10 bolt is usually more of a problem than the transmissions when you are hard on them but its rare to see an original 4l60 passed 200k miles. id say thats not bad considering most people see them as a shit transmission

You realize that after the F150, the Tundra has the most American parts content in the truck segment?

The Tacoma is up there too. They at least manufacture them in the USA (San Antonio TX), as opposed to many Mexican built Rams.

I know, was pretty hard to justify getting the power windows and locks, but I have young kids and want to be able to control the back windows myself.

2.7 and tow package is of course pointless, but I can still do 7k lb. Don't tow often but I need the ability.

Whats wrong with OEM wheels? Honestly I would prefer the stock steels but I had 18in tires and my steels were only 17. Luckily the OEM rims were only 40/per

Maybe you would like it better if I bolted the spoiler from a supra on it.

I'm looking at getting an s10 with a manual and a 4.3. I'm really married to the idea of a slightly lowered mini truck that handles a bit better than a regular truck because I'm coming to this from someone who just doesn't want to pay sports car insurance for rwd anymore. Would the reduction in weight and the addition of a manual (I can't find any manual full size Chevy pickups in my area) make your recommendation any different?

the dont handle for shit, build quality is worse than the big trucks, still get 15mpg, interior sucks, and youll scrape off of the slightest bumps
>>
>>14660912
God damnit though. The only things I can afford to insure are economy cars (american 90s economy cars are garbage, I don't want to be caught dead driving an import) or some sort of small truck. I like Rangers, but the the 3.0 is disappointing and the 2.3 and especially 4.0 are well out of my budget (~3k CAD).

What would you recommend? I am realistic with my budget, but would like two of the three: RWD, manual, or decent handling.
>>
>>14660984
Actually I'm going to stretch that budget to 3.5-4k.

Got a 2001 ranger 3.0

It looses about a gallon of coolant if you go and drive it a decent distance but after awhile it stops loosing it as much or is at "equilibrium". I drove it 2 hours straight with the heater on after it lost a bunch and it did OK.

Fluid test for head gasket: good, fluid did not turn yellow.

Pressure test with spark plugs out, cooling system held 18 PSI for 24 hours, no leak....

Does not leak visibly when idled or sitting cold. Only seems to have issues when under load and then it looses about a gallon then seems to stop but you have to run the heater since its so low on coolant.

What DE FUG is going on here??? Basically ruled out the main suspect which is the head gasket... which i guess is good...

6.0 and 6.4 are great trucks. You just can't drive them like a 7.3 or 5.9 where you run the dogshit out of them and expect them to last. 6.0 are EXTEMELY finnicky and need maintence as well as the 6.4. 6.4s had the most advanced injection system before anyone else, so people tuned em up but didnt do anything else and got mad they didn't last after being ran like a corvette everyday. Highly recommend the 6.9. Mechanical makes it easy as fawk to work on. Na means it has a mean v8 exhaust note. Max torque at 1400 rpm makes your dick diamonds. Not to mention the badassery of that idi diesel clatter.

If you pull heavy it'll pull it, but not fast. Just keeps chugging along. I've pulled ~11k with mine. Barely did 55 but it did it. I love my idi so much that even though I have a 12 Cummins I'm rebuilding my 6.9 before I toss on the turbo and swap it into a cleaner truck.

No crewcab fords here in the US, Chevy made them in S10 and Colorado guise. Tacoma and Frontier are another two options, although the Toyota tax is insane, and Dana frames on Toyotas of that generation are prone to rusting out, so keep that in mind if you're in a northern climate. I'd also caution that those midsize/compact crewcab trucks tend to have very short beds, so even a mountain bike might need to be position sideways to fit with a closed tailgate.

Consider this though, SUVs of the same platform (S10 blazer, 4Runner, Explorer) tend to be much cheaper and less beaten on than the truck variant, and I'd argue are better for canoe hauling owing to their longer roofs. Heck oftentimes they already have a roof rack. For bikes, a hitch mounted carrier works fantastic. Additionally, if you're going /out/ with a group of 4 people, SUVs generally have better rear seat comfort that small crew cabs of that generation.

I use my 3g 4Runner for exactly what you described, and with a Thule 5-bike hitch carrier with a swing-away function for hatch access, it's been an awesome setup. I've actually had bikes on the rack, and a canoe on the roof, it all works out great.

Just a thought.
