So an update for adVentura: Went and saw the New Yorker. Exterior is a bit mossy, floor pans and trunk appear to be solid as does the gas tank. Engine spun free so I ran a softline to a gas can from the fuel pump. No start, but it did crank. Ran my little inline fuel pump to the can, dumped a little gas in the carb got it to start but the engine needs overhauled as it was smoking very badly (smelled like a head gasket). So at minimum, I'm looking at a rering kit, new gaskets, and a fuel pump to get it running. Can't confirm the condition of the tranny, but it is engaging when I put it into gear (engine stalls when put in gear, combination of barely idling and possibly a voltage regulator, very common). BUT, it is his I'm glad to say and am talking to my sister on what we want to do. I left a deposit with the old lady who has is and she wrote me a receipt saying shed hold it for a month if needed. Working on a price offer as well.

In other news, my 512 is just not in a good way. After sitting in the driveway, I went to go start her up and it was.... Odd. It cranked for half a revolution and then almost felt like it was binding. Carb was due for a rebuild anyway so I pulled it and found a bad float..... And a wood screw in the carb. I have never opened up this carburetor as it was claimed rebuilt and looked to be so. Now, my worry is something dropped into the intake and has gotten imbedded in the piston. I have another stock 440 if the 512 is trash, but I don't want to lose my 300 ponies. On a slightly brighter note though, I do have a spare set of pistons for the 512, but I will lose some compression (I run -1 flat tops, these are -6 dished I had from my first 528 stroker).

So it's one of my greatest classic dreams to build a first gen Pontiac Tempest coupe with the front sheet metal and trim from a first gen Buick Skylark and the trunklid and rear lights from a first gen Oldsmobile Cutlass because the boxy Skylark ass with the broken up side notch around the rear wheel well looks worse than the other two, but its front is utterly fantastic and an almost obscene compact homage to jet age styling.

Turns out someone very nearly beat me to it, only with an Oldsmobile Cutlass for the base. Looks very neat, but I'm guessing the curved metal behind the rear wheel will be even more pronounciated on a Tempest without the extended rear bumper cutting through it. Also the Tempest had some extra chrome finlets on the rear fenders. Glad it fits nicely together though.

Aforementioned Pontiac rear with said chrome finlets, making the ass look far more fin centric and less rounded off.
>>
>>14642605
The Cutlass on the other hand lacked the finlets, but in return had a trunklid without grooves that's just a better looking smooth curve from side to side, also instead of single slot shaped tail lights in a car colored housing it had double round tail lights in a chrome housing that are easier to turn into jets with bullet lights, though I'd recess them by about a third of the length so they'll actually look like jets coming out of a hole.
>>
>>14642619
And here's the regular Skylark side profile and rear with a broken up slope and a weird boxy butt.

Fucking sweet man. I'm glad that it was your dad's. From what you have described it doesn't sound like it would be the end of the world either to get it driving which is good. When it comes to a price offer, I probably wouldn't go over maybe 2k? Also did you end up taking any pictures of it?

I didn't have the chance to take pictures as I'd killed my phone using the GPS. Interior was in great shape considering the rest, no tears in the seats or carpet. Dash had no cracks and the dash pad was solid and straight. Being as relatively good shape as it was, I'm setting my max amount at 4k, but again, this was my fathers car and will be again so pricing it is difficult for me. I wanted to lowball it and say $1000 but held my tongue to see if they would settle on a price.

Between the New Yorker and my 512 shitting bricks, its going to be an expensive spring. I'll let you know what else I find out.

Sweet man, please continue to update whenever you can.

>>14643291

>>
>>14643731
No worries, ill keep you guys posted. My only worry now is if I should go ahead and order a set of rings in case I have a bad piston but the rings I need are 140 a set minimum and are a non stock part at all the local stores. I'm guessing a bent rod is causing my vibration and the wood screw I found in the carb was from the previous "owner" (fuck up). Can't figure how a screw could get into the float bowl without being torn down anyway....
>>
>>14642835
Why not? What happened? What should I do then
>>
>>14643783
Use whatever "professional" clearcoat is used for when you paint a car. Because the shit you buy in a can will wear right off after like a month. Happened to me, and the rust is coming through already.
>>
>>14643831
They make a 2k clear spray paint that's supposed to be good, did you use rustoleum or something? UV will wreck all kinds of shit
>>
>>14644441
I honestly don't remember. It might have been rustoleum.
>>
>>14644536
If it was that cheap duplicolor stuff then it'll do that every time. Rustoleum is better about staying good usually.
>>
>>14643316
If you need help or parts, let me know. I know of a lot of people who hoard Imperial parts; the fact that they need to is one of the biggest things preventing me from buying a '65 or '66.

Also, the Nixon sticker will go out tomorrow. I was out of envelopes, but work wasn't.
>>
>>14644564
Actually just went into the garage to check what I used, and I was right it was Rustoleum. I personally don't know shit when it comes to painting but my buddy told me to use this stuff.

Progress on the Nova.

The nightmare of the build is almost ready to turn on. The timing is set, and it runs now.

Just need to finish connecting radiator. The 350 is running the alternator on the passenger side, so I have to extend the alternator wiring to reach it. Also will need a new belt and a ton of other small touches.

what car is this we're talking about. I have accepted my truck is fucking slow. I want a nice paintjob, but I know once that happens I can't have as much fun with the truck or just bash and beat on it.
>>
>>14648274
This pig, I'm sure you've seen me post it before. I won't even be aiming for too nice of a paint job, just fix the cab corner/rocker rust and get rid of the attrocious matte white the PO sprayed it with. It flakes off in some areas, has pitting, and dirt clings to it. I've considered doing the cheap tractor-paint method, just to get it somewhat presentable.

At least your truck pulls off the patina look well, mine just looks like a beater.

>>

I love squarebody trucks in flat black, I do, but if I was to go black it'd have to be gloss. In the end, it'll probably go some grey/silver, who knows.

>>14648317
Yup, dumping out the factory 305/th350 for a new crate 350 and going to buy a new th350 from a local shop. I'll probably build something from the oil pan up eventually, but it's my DD, so right now I'm looking for getting rid of the 200k and counting drivetrain, and getting it back on the road. PO treated the thing like shit, I've spent nearly a year cleaning it up and fixing little things here and there, while putting a shit ton of miles on her.
>>
>>14648336
Body last man, get everything drivetrain related done first, let it look pretty after it's reliable and fast. Nothing irritates me more than anyone who dumps their money into wheels/paint/stereo/etc and worry about how it looks when it runs like dogshit and has issues underneath.

what's the figures on your 350?

I am very blessed though that my previous owner had completely restored it before I bought it, and only the exterior got fukt. That being said I had to rewire and redo the stereo system. that was a fund afternoon activity.
>>
>>14648368
I opted to just go with the base 350, ordered through Summit.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-10067353

I could've gone for more power, but I wanted to get rid of the factory transmission at the same time, rather than grenading the thing with a better motor. Eventually better heads/cam/lifters etc; will be in the mix, but for the time being I just want to get rid of the damn 305, and have a bit more power out if it.

Helped put one of these crate 350's into my dad's truck 2 years ago, after the previous motor fucked off a piston, and it's done well in his 85 3/4 ton that we regularly use to haul shit.
>>
>>14648349

>>
>>14648407
Yeah, it's a bitch isn't it? Lol. I'm doing a full swap for the most part, motor, trans, headers and exhaust. Put a rebuilt quadrajet on the 305 a while back, that's done fantastic, but it's going out the window as well for a 600cfm manual choke Edelbrock. Part of my problem is just going all out and doing it right from the get go, locking header and collector bolts, ceramic plug wires and whatnot.
>>
>>14648399
9 inch is a ford unit, as is the 8.8. Both are pretty much a go to for rear ends, similar to how the 350 chevy is a standard hot rod motor. I don't know about the 8.5 though, I am not sure how that is. I have always thought the GM 10 bolt was the way to go but I don't know GM rears.
>>
>>14648424
I'm pretty sure I have an 8.25, and its a 10 bolt.

I'd love to pluck out a 9 inch from a junkyard, but I'm weary about the fab work and shit.
>>
>>14648432
I hear that. odds are you could get one for fairly cheap, but do some googling about easy swap rears.

>>14648423

This. Body work for me has always came last for a couple different reasons:

1. You change what sort of setup you want during the build which can affect the theme of the car.
2. If you paint before pulling an engine, you have to be paranoidly careful because of that pretty new paint job (and didn't you want a colormatch engine bay too?)
3. Performance trumps looks nearly every time (look at the first rat rods, just big engines in heater looking cars. I know that's the style but they are just building off the same idea though the look evolved into its own.)

>>
>>14648714
Not terrible just remember to plug any hoses and avoid the wiring harness. Rhino liner is something I've played with before for lining engines, but I usually go black implement paint and a LP spray gun. I can see bed liner working better long term and it would provide protection, however your vibration damping is reduced as it makes the metal stiffer due to it being non flexible. Just something to keep in mind.

How is it shipping to Canada from summit? I wouldn't mind saving a hundred bucks if the shipping/import fees weren't bad.
>>14651510
Little off topic, but I've seen plenty of chevy manifolds and carbs on kijiji for cheap, but most of the ford-related stuff I've looked at is rarer and more expensive. Is this how it usually is, or are SBCs just more popular around here?
>>

depends on the engine. if it is for a windsor it should be around the same price as a SBC. If it is an FE it should be a bit pricier. I know very little about MEL or 385 series prices but 385 should be a bit cheaper than the FE just because of the production run. FE was also the uscle car engine of choice back in the day.
>>
>>14651678
Ahh, I see what you mean. I don't know a lot about individual engines but AFAIK 460 fords can make decent power but aren't the go-to engine for most people. I've seen a lot of people who have huge hardons for 429 cobra jets though.

ford 460 is badass, but they are large engines, and guzzle fuel like hell. The 429 is from the same family, it just is destroked and debored. That being said, most 429s have better factory heads and cams though than the 460.

Figured it'd be better to ask on this thread, instead of creating a new one.

What would one do, in order to get a beetle to be more fun to drive?

Beetle owner here, it's a fun car, but it's kinda slow most of the time (even though I already drive at 10 above the limit all the time, since speed limits are a joke in São Paulo), but I don't feel like it's lacking any comfort, since I drive with the windows half-open most of the time.
>>
>>14651774
That's what I've heard. It's too bad that cobra jet heads et al cost megabux because otherwise I'd put some of those on while I have my engine apart. I can't afford to fall down that rabbit hole quite yet

There are somewhat easy to get dual-carb kits out there, but i wonder if the gains in power are worth it, considering the loss in mileage. Also, I'd be better off with new and better camshafts, heads and pistons, right?

upgrade the suspension a bit, and either swap in a more powerful motor or look into getting more power from what you've got in it.

someone here knows about Chevy small blocks, right? I need some help with mine:
American replacement 4 bolt main, 2.02 heads, has a quadrajet manifold I despise on it and an edelbrock 600 cfm 1406 adapted to it. I have good pressure, new pump, new fan clutch, everything I can see is right, but the engine overheats incredibly fast. it will start vapor locking after a good 5 minutes of idling. what could be the cause? coolant is good, fuel supply is fine, everything just runs up to 250 F fast. I can take a picture if needed
>>
>>14651923
The other stuff would help but you'd probably still want the dual carb. What engine do you have? If it's smaller than 1.6 you might as well get a bigger engine while you're at it.

1500cc engine. There are kits that up the cylinder travel and a little bit of diameter, and allow for bigger displacement.
>>
>>14651968
Wrong head gasket or installed wrong , .060 overbore without adequate cooling, running it too lean, plugged radiator vapor lock in the radiator. Lots of things can contribute to overheating have done any work to it recently or has it always done this?
>>
>>14651968
Could be faulty thermostat. That would be the luckiest one to be
>>
>>14652006
What's stopping you from getting another engine entirely? Too expensive?
>>
>>14652030
they aren't exactly cheap, especially a desirable dual port 1.8
>>
>>14652047
This desu. If I was to get a new engine and go nuts on it, I'd get the VW 1.8 AP engine, straight four with tons of mods and turbo kits available here in HUEland.
>>
>>14651968
Specs will tell us more. Are you overbored/stroked, electric or mech fuel pump, are you running a carb spacer, how are the fuel lines to the carb routed, have you ever hot flushed the block and radiator, is the thermostat faulty? Carb size doesn't play into this unless you can verify the cooling for the block is free flowing and your rad can handle the cubes and output of your setup.

Start with your cooling system then figure out the fuel, as your engine heat issue may be directly related to your vapor lock issue.

That's what I was thinking of doing. Just pack a shitload of fuel line, coolant, oil and a battery. Just stop at every gas station on the way back home

>>14657178
Check your overall ignition and mechanical timing. The later requires pulling the timing cover to veryify you have no slack or a bad cog tooth. Chances are, if the guy built the engine right, you will have a Cloyes double roller. If you are lucky, you have the fully adjustable version which is god tier. From there, call crane cams and tell them your displacement and see what custom grind they come up with and time it based on figures from that. It's a long shot as you don't have the cam card, but if that BBC was built right, you should get close with that method.

A carb rebuild never hurts you in the long run as it lets you eliminate any possible carb problems (minus bad tuning, so if you rebuild, set it close to stock adjustments and it should run fine). Have you tried putting a fuel pressure gauge between the pump and the carb? Is the fuel pump electric or my preferred mechanical?
>>
>>14657209
This is correct. And BBC always like a bit more timing than BBM (mine is set at 30* total mech advance, 4*BTDC ign timing, and 2* retard mech timing). Btw, when you say a no run condition, will it fire over, sputter, then die? Hows it do with a shot of carb cleaner down the carb? Finally, have you verified that your carb base gaskets aren't leaking badly (it can cause one hell of a lean condition if they are bad)

You're not getting much with the Manuél unless you really want that granny 1st gear, and without overdrive a small block won't get too much better mileage than a big block. Still you could get a pretty nice small block longbed for 6-8k or maybe even less.

So I was looking around for my first actual project car in the local classifieds, and just now a yellow 1976 Porsche 911 Targa popped up for sale, with no price listed (which probably means they're going to ask a lot).

They didn't answer the phone today and I'm probably going to try to take a look at it tomorrow.

Judging from the pictures, the paint has peeled down to bare metal, the vinyl parts are work and scratched, there's some surface rust in places where the paint has worn down, but the body looks straight, can't tell much more. For what it's worth, the ad says the car is in "great condition" whatever that means.

How much would one of these be worth in that condition and what should I be on the lookout for if I got take a look at it.

And what would I be getting myself into by buying an air-cooled Porsche as a project car, money-pit wise?
>>
>>14659736
I think 15k if it is a really raggedy one. maybe 10 in a pinch but it is not a long nose so you don't have to trip.
>>
>>14658851
Keep in mind finding a low mile one to begin with isn't easy, or usually cheap, as well as the amount of time and money that goes into the notorious repairs on those 60-72's, let alone fixing some PO's "work". I'd see if the guy would entertain 15 or 16k, if not, give him what he's asking, looks like a gorgeous truck and like he's put a lot of love into it.

Buy it, keep it like it is, if you change anything, keep it limited to stuff that can be undone without cutting/welding, save original parts.
>>
>>14658851
>>14660281
Also, rather than worrying about a smallblock manual, you could invest in a gear vendor overdrive unit for the big block. They bolt onto the back of the transmission between output shaft and driveshaft.

The old 2.5 Triumph 6 is no dog. Brother had a stock 2.5TC with 4spd + o/d. When it was tuned it went very well.

Going the RB route would just wreck a classic that is getting rarer and rarer to find one that isn't a pile of junk.

>tl;dr was triggered by the RB bullshit.

Going to have some minor body work done and repair the front and rear bumper. I'm good friends with some people that own a body shop that will do all the body work and bumper work for dirt cheap! My car just needs some touch ups and a dent removal. Other than that my car runs solid I've done so much work to it.

Nice interior color. Is that an original radio I see? If so, fucking awesome.
>>
>>14662219
Yes, original stock stereo. I plan to install a new radio because the current one is old and the tape player no longer works. Thought the stereo itself still works. I just wanna play my own music using the CD player or USB and Aux port. Instead of looking for good music on shit stations that play shit music and mostly commercials. My classic runs fantastic and always has. But now even better after I had the carb rebuilt and new fuel pump, water pump, fuel lines and filters, front breaks and rear break drums. break lines, master cylinder bleeders. rear upper and lower control arms as well as rear shocks. entire exhaust system replaced. the list goes on.

Well, did my first full day of driving the car around.

Starts up well, and gets surprisingly decent gas mileage, but it definitely needs a lot of tuning. Throttle is very sluggish, and it feels like it's got a lot of power being held back. Trying to decide between a full carb rebuild or just trying to tune what it has

It was still fun to rumble around town and get checked out though.

Here's me pistons. Everything looked clean and neat and the rings seated in really well, no heat markings or scratches in the cylinders. Lifters were fresh as well with no visible wear and same with the camshaft. My dizzy bushing was a bit rough so I replaced it and checked the gear which was fine (good brass bushings). Overall, I removed very little carbon from the chambers and did polish the valves up a bit but they all seated well. Decided not to do valve stem seals as they all appeared to be just fine and my rocker play was right on spec as were the arms.

Sup guys, I'm >>14659736.

So I went to look at that 1976 Porsche 911S Targa, and it's really in a pretty bad state, needs tons of work. The good part is that the body is pretty much rust free and straight. There's some superficial rust where the paint is cracking and peeling away, but the body pan and everything underneath is completely rust free.

According to the owner, the car has been standing in a garage and hasn't run for close to 10 years. They rolled it out, change the sparkplugs, fuel pump and distributor, the engine will fire and turn, but it wont stay on, and you have to pour fuel into the CIS thingy to even get it to fire. There's a massive oil leak somewhere, and the fresh oil the owned poured in is all over the exhaust. No idea about the transmission, but at least I can select all the gears with it standing and off.

The interior is pretty much fucked as well.

The owner wants $7000 for it. I'm thinking it's too much for a first project car, but I figured I'd ask for a second opinion.

One thing that confused me is that the badge says 911SC, but as far as I know the 1976 model should say 911S, no idea what's up with that.

So, is this too much of a money pit or should I say fuck it and give it a go?

Should I? Looks like all it needs is a fender and some non-negroid wheels. My first car was a 69 Caprice so I might be looking at it with ride colored glasses. There's also this one which looks almost exactly like mine did, right down to the wheels, Mexican kandy red paint and missing door handles.

>>

I never like when people put no info for a car, so I would be a little iffy with the red one.

The other one looks pretty good for the price. I would probably at least check it out and see how it is,
>>

Yeah lack of info sketches me out about the red one. I think I can make out the holes in the door. Mine actually were shaved, it was a royal pain in the ass and I don't really wanna go through that again. The blue/grey one seems reasonably priced but I really need something DDable and it looks like it'll need a fair amount of deniggering.

Wow I'm super jelly of those prices. I'd never find something like those, that cheap up here in Canada. I love the 60s Chryslers and love Thunderbirds, so I'd say one of those

Fucking right? One of the few good things (that I know about and assume) about Commifornia. Also, I found this and I'm sure you will like it.

>>14671247
What the literal fuck, that should be no more than half that price.
>>
>>14671261
I know right? Car prices up here are just fucking crazy. The cheapeast I've ever seen an early 70s Thunderbird here was $6000.
That 1950 Plymouth Deluxe would most likely be listed around $15000 or more here as well.

And if you think that's bad, check out what this crazy fucker wants for this http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/van/cto/5483099512.html

I like the Newport, it's like a giant version of the 65 Dart I used to have. Dat big block too. Probably a 361?

Not that into post-72 Ferds but that is a nice one, wonder why it's salvage though

Hnnnng dat Continental dough, I didn't even know I wanted one. Slightly over my budget but sheeeiiit

Mostly looking for a Chebby right now, something with a small block that's easy to find parts for. Budget's around 3k. Ideally I'd like a 64-72 El Camino and there's a couple I'm planning on checking out but I figure I might as well diversify a little.

Nice Newport but damn thats too much.

>>14671294
Gotcha man.

Now this would be quite something, if it runs, which the ad conveniently doesn't say...
>>
>>14671362
what's your budget negro?
>>
>>14671373
$3k or thereabouts, might stretch it to 3500.
>>
>>14671384
I would get a C10 or an old truck. cheap, you can build it into anything, and hot damn are they fun to drive.
>>
Since I won't be getting that 54 Chrysler Imperial, I've been looking at this truck for a while.
http://comoxvalley.craigslist.ca/cto/5449706188.html

I already went to look at it with my father, but he couldn't buy it, cause it was only an F150. So now I want it

6mpg, the truck. looks good though
>>
>>14671425
Actually average is 12 mpg city and 17 mpg highway, plus it only has 260 000 on it, which is jack shit for the 300 I6
>>
>>14671429
bullshit it gets 17, even with the OD. unless EFI but even then I don't think so.
>>

My grandpa had a mint condition mustard yellow 69 C10 longbed with a 350, 3 on the tree and no power anything. I loved that fucking truck, actually more than my grandpa did as he preferred his 80s Town Car. He gave it to my cousin when he went to a rest home, I couldn't be mad because I wasn't old enough to drive yet. Later on I lost touch with my cousin for a couple years then when finally I saw her at my grandpa's funeral, I found out she fucking sold it without telling me. I dunno if I can deal with those feels m8

It is EFI and 5 Speed. Ford trucks were last carb'ed in 87
