Actually thats false, Americans just think of diesel as dirty and refuse to buy cars powered by them. The recent VW scandal hasnt helped either. In normal Day to Day driving they are comparable to gas engines and typically get higher mpg.

It's a shame theres like no good modern diesels in the US.

Diesel doesn't catch on in america because it waxes or gels in very cold weather (much more so than unleaded) and it would be impractical to market a car that could only work in the warmer southern america versus unleaded which can work in all seasons

As I guy who moved from Yuroop I can assure you that diesel engines are shit for non-commercial transport. The only thing I miss is the option to get a manual transmission for most car models

The fastest diesel engine in the US AFAIK is in the BMW M550d XDrive and it gets to 60 in 4.7 seconds. That's slower than a $30k American pony car...
