$600 total and have new paint on front half of car plus a new windshield. Buy new wipers for good measure. Insurance premiums stay the same and no charges on my license.

Gotta love public insurance. I once went to insurance for a stone chip on my front bumper. I was pressure washing the car and the paint peeled. The estimator looked at me kind of funny, then proceeded to write up paint on bumper, both fenders, both mirrors, hood, roof, grill, new headlights, and new windshield. It was an $8500 stone chip repair. Cost me $200 and no points since it was considered hit and run (not at fault).

Not emotionally attached to it, but to the time/money I'm gonna spend sourcing a replacement. i can't just wander into safelite and get another window put in like I could the yukon. Same story for the front fender, the only way to get it replaced is to buy an aftermarket panel, cut out the old one, and weld the new one on. Luckily though, rock auto has the parts available. The few auto body shops I've checked out want nothing to do with her, because they know it's not a huge collector car so they can't charge an arm and a leg, and that it's uncommon enough that if they fuck up, they can't replace what's wrong.

The stone chip was from a single actual incident involving a specific other vehicle at a specific time on a specific road. This is an insurable accident. What sort of reason would I have to not go through with a claim like that.

The chip on the bumper was so bad that the urethane was actually dented and the paint was torn. That's the one I noticed. Then when I washed the car it peeled and I was pissed. The car was peppered with pea gravel from a passing truck in a construction zone going way over the limit. When the estimator and I inspected the car, we found all of the other damage that I didn't originally see. The windshield for example was almost new from the previous owner, and was cracked at the very top edge right by the roof where a stone had hit and dented the leading edge of the roof panel. The car was pretty immaculate, so it was not hard to pick out the damage on the frontal areas. Stone chips are stone chips, but when they are all over with the force to dent metal and urethane, it's pretty obvious that they're from the same incident.

Originally I was kinda bummed when I saw the bumper, but it wasn't worth $200 to fix. After I washed all the bugs off (it was a 2500km road trip), the rest of the damage showed through.
