I've had mine since 14 with little problems aside from fitment issues since it's built on an econobox chassis (windshield seal, rear cloth well covers, driver side door panel).

Ironically I had a Mazda 3 with the same door panel fitment issue.

Also it's an FWD Miata with more low end torque than an ND and more planted powered wheels.

That said if you're buying car for more than 2 people for Fuchs sake don't buy a FiST/Miat until your family has viable means of transportation (Sienna/Odyssey, Camry, older Lexus, 201x CTS, DO NOT JAM THESE PEOPLE INTO YOUR WEEKEND CAR I SWEAR TO YOU I WILL FIND

I cross shopped the Fiesta ST, Miata, and WRX. Ended up with the ST because it just feels better. I have had several miatas including an SCCA spec racer. For a daily drivable car the ST is hard to beat in performance/cost. I've had mine out to thunder hill several times and I'm still on my stock brakes at 23k.

Not really. Many car companies have restricted MT to the base models. This is common.

The weird thing is that a manual is offered on their mid-size crossover, but not their subcompact crossover, when the CX-3 would benefit from it more.

It's weird in the sense that Mazda is supposed to have a sporty image but only offers manual on base models, whereas Ford is manual only on it's top models. Also, Sport is the bottom trim for the CX-5. You can get the 2.5L in the Sport if you get an auto but you're stuck with the 2.0L if you go for the manual.

I've owned my Fiesta ST for over 2 years and 35,000mi now, and I spend a lot of time on the forums.

Only its brake-eating habit has proven to be true in my case.

A very small number of early cars on the forums had clutch issues, and Ford bent over backwards to deal with them in most of the cases I've found.

The rest of those supposed issues are either mixed up with problems from the non-ST Fiesta, are things that literally happened to single owners and are well within typical component failure rates for a brand new car, or are things that I've never heard of outside /o/.

That said, I don't think the ST is really comparable to a Miata, it's a very different kind of driving experience. If anything, it's more like a WRX or other turbo AWD car. I owned a Mazda2 before the Fiesta and found it much closer to the Miata in driving style.

The RX-8 is probably as close as it's going to get, if you can deal with the rotary.

The Infiniti G20 and Sentra SE-R are probably as close as it'll get, given that they're SR20 powered and are about the same dimensions and weight. Nissan seems to have preferred the RB series in its RWD cars, but the closest would probably be the JDM Laurel or Cefiro.

If you're just talking about a 4dr car that's cheap, RWD, relatively light, and popular for skidz, then it's probably the BMW E36. European drift events are overflowing with them.
