Nice 86, OP. These cars always catch my eye. I love the simplicity. Do any California legal turbo kits for these exist?

Why would you get an AE86 over something like an S13 or something? Are they fun to drive? Is it worth it over an S13? What about something like a KE70 or an older KE30?

I've never driven an AE86 but I've driven an old Silvia, hence why I'm asking.

Honestly, ive owned an s13 and I loved it. I would own one again. However, The reason I love the ae86 is the way it handles the corners.... honestly there is nothing like it, in the downhill its magical.... I run trd struts with T3 coilovers up front and TRD blue springs in the rear.... Honestley the most fun ive ever had with a car and Ive had many. They are light, feel very mechanical, real and provides a very immersive driving experience. The stock 4age gives me chills in the high revs whilst running some twisty roads.

My te72 doesnt have Power Steering and its not that bad because of how light it is, im assuming the same can be said for the ae86.
As for no ABS, just get good brakes and dont tailgate.

I've seen some that have gone 500k miles. Even though it's a sporty car, it's still a Corolla. Very reliable technology.

In Switzerland, cheapest 86 in the country is around 7k and would need more than that in repairs. Pristine condition ones are on sale for 15 - 25 k, although obviously they never sell for that price.

Most will have power steering and AC. A manual steering rack in a US AE86 was rare. AC may or may not work. Mine only functions as a heater.

I've used mine as a daily for 2 years. It's not a comfortable car for long distance commuting, but it works. There's always little shit that's going wrong with it and strange noises happen, but overall it's a solid and reliable car.

Back to what you said about the coupes..... undeniably more rigid. In my gts hatch to archive similar rigidity I run a T3 hatch bar, t3 rear strut tower brace and trunk floor brace.... IMO HATCH better for twistys and grip with all the chassi flex..... coupes drift like a charm.

On the one hand, I agree with you. You could get a lot of better cars for $10k. It's slow, made of cardboard and rust, has 60 rwhp, and basically sucks ass.

But on the other hand, if that's what you want, you might as well spend $10k on it. It's not like $10k is a lot of money. It won't even buy you a new Corolla, only 1/2 of it. So if you spend the money on an AE86, a rebuild, new suspension and maybe paint, instead of on a brand new Corolla, I don't really see anything wrong with that. The only time it would be stupid is if you're like "I want to go fast. Better spend $10k on a RWD live axle Corolla from 1986"

Depends on condition. I've seen people with dyno numbers ranging from 80-100 hp with stock 4AGEs in good condition.

No one who buys one expects to go fast stock. They expect fast throttle response and maneuverability which you still can't get from many newer cars. It's not the same experience as an economy trim Corolla in any year.

Jap spec GT-Apex model, Watanabes, Bride driver seat, Cusco strut braces front and rear, FC RX-7 brakes and steel braided lines, aftermarket ignition. Would post a pic but I'm sort of on the wrong computer for it right now.

Yes, basically. To me it's the perfect car:
Low-power, lightweight, RWD, ugly-ish and yet well-proportioned and entirely utilitarian. Basically, it's a car-car, no gimmicks, no bullshit, just a box on wheels that's fun to drive and in this day and age of creases, bulges and pretend-muscles, it's very unique.

Also, it gives me eargasms with its very distinctive 4A-GE sound. A very gritty fuck-you sound that pierces the ears, yet sounds much like "motorsports", contrary to higher-powered, higher-displacement clean-sounding rumble. I wouldn't mind a big old american V8 either, they're gritty and rough in similar ways.

In the end, it's a glorified shitbox, but I love the shape and the concept of it, so it's my number one dream. Which is nice, 10k is cheap, as I live frugally and earn good money from an engineering job, it doesn't take long to save that up.

Found a clean title gts coupe with pop ups for 2500. Rebuilt 4age with paperwork and 5spd. Painted awful light blue and was a drift car but not crashed or drift damaged, surprisingly. Really not a bad car but is it worth 2500? Vin checks out it's clean and has 10 owners as expected. No accidents reported.
