Sleeper General?

I'm looking for a sleeper car, pref a factory forced induction setup, for under 10k.
What are some suggestions from other anons? I want to be fast but not flashy.

pic really not that related.

I was thinking something like a debadged VW CC VR6 4Motion but only the base model 2.0T comes with manual as an option.

problem - this will be a DD as well. If it were to by a weekend/fun car project I could see that, but the thought of DDing a v8-swapped car isn't really fun.
and i prefer my sleepers to remain somewhat silent until I give it some slack.
It's part of the sleeper charm.

You can add a turbo or make power pretty well with one of these, and it just looks like a grandmas car.

no it won't, and you're on an auto enthusiast board and looking to build a sleeper, so you should be able to fix any problems that arise

Sorry mate, i may be an enthusiast but at the end of the day this baby will have to be reliable enough for me to drive it to and from work 5 days a week.

>>14437134
>>14437140
FI is not a must, but I prefer factory forced induction as it's significantly more reliable, and if it's not FFI, I intend on doing it myself, not buying someone else's.
Also, finding an Altima in manual is hard, but I'll look out for them.

>>14437155

>I'm also not looking to spend an arm and a leg on parts for a BMW that will break when pushed.
HAHAHAHAHA Do you actually think that's how BMWs work? Especially not E36s. Tons of people daily drive BMWs without any problems. They are reliable cars, they are just expensive to get repaired. Parts can be had for cheap and installed for cheap.

>Also, finding an Altima in manual is hard, but I'll look out for them.

If done right, yes. you can actually do a good turbo build and if you have supporting mods, it'll be fine.

>>th-they don't break, b-but when they do, it costs an arm and a leg to fix
That's not what I said. It's expensive to pay somebody to fix them, not to fix them yourself.

>>
>>14437320
i said sleeper not tuner. stop throwing a fit over me being skeptical of a BMW. I said I would look into the rest, though once again, I am skeptical that I'll find an Altima worth a damn.
It's not my fault you didn't know altimas with the new 2.5 liter are dogshit.
It's not my fault you didn't know the Q series V6 in them is only factory-rated for 200,000 miles, and most examples are nearing that or over that number.
It sounds like they were great tuners - new.
But this isn't 2007 and I'm not buying a new Altima SE-R.
>>
>>14437502
Only Saabs available in my area are 9-3's and the SUV (9-5 I think) and only the SUVs are available with AWD trims.
I've heard bad things about Saab reliability (this is going to be a DD, I will drive it 7 days a week).

>>14437515
>>14437519
tax on anything subie has made me stay away but I'll look into those

>>14437356
There are very few WRX's in my area that I would consider looking at, and most of those are on the lower end as far as priorities go - They just have too many miles or are too expensive.
>>
>>14437913
9-3s made after GM took over are NOT unreliable, especially from 06 onwards, doesn't matter the trim they're all reliable, and the 9-5 isn't the SUV
>>
>>14436772
So does anybody know anything about working on Corollas? there's a 2007 Corolla S and a 2009 Corolla XRS I'm looking at.
Is the XRS worth it for the 2.4L engine?
Is it as reliable as a regular corolla? (this one has 165k miles, kinda makes me wanna stay away).
>>
>>14437944
The 2.4 is from the Camry so yes, it will be reliable, you'll enjoy it over the 1ZZ in the Corolla S
>>
>>14437954
>>14437954
How does it do when turbo'd? how much can the block hold?
sorry mate, the internet is full of tuning suggestions for Corollas from the 80-90's but woefully little on post 2000 models.
Should I be looking for Camrys? (since they share the engine)
>>
>>14437943
but what about the constant memes (in real life as well as here) where it shows the guy starting the Saab and problem light after problem light comes on?
>>
>>14438009
and I was being autistic, I have 9-3, 9-5, and 9-7, and it's the 9-7 that only comes in AWD trims.
Only 9-3's have a manual trans, and they only come in the 4-cylinder option, as well as all being either convertibles or built before 2006.
I know the 4-cyls aren't that bad but isn't pre-06 bad?
>>
>>14438042
The pre-06s are not horrible, but they have their quirks, there's at least one anon on here that knows Saabs really well, you can have the manual with the Turbo 6 in the Aero package 9-3s and the 2.0T is a fucking great engine as well, and 9-7s are all AWD because they're the platform mate to the Trailblazer

have a decent idea, but a sleeper is a car you pass and go "yeah, big deal." and then shit your pants when it guns it.
Anything can be a sleeper, depending on situation, but in general it's a boring-looking car that gets really exciting under power.
some anons may say "muh 4 door sedans" but desu a minivan is as much a sleeper as an SRT-4 Neon that's been rebadged as a regular SXT neon and had the spoiler removed.

a lot of it depends on what you see as faster than you, and a lot of it depends on what the person who owns the car does with it.
A civic that rolls lambos (theoretically) is a sleeper, even if it has a fartcan and a gigantic useless wing.
because you see those things and go "ricers" and pull in your lambo to be a prick - and it keeps up.
I roll with a lot of 250-300 HP sedans and coupes, mostly V6 swaps and a lot of noise, so I prefer something quiet and zippy, with noise being okay when I gun it, but I don't want to wake the neighborhood while idling.

everybody likes different things, and there are a lot of different things to like in cars.
I actually hated cars and car related things until about 2 years ago, mainly because I was kind of forced into helping my dad upkeep his truck (asshole DD'd a fucking Syclone) and later on had to do that in order to get money from him.
Then he unloaded a lemon-tier ranger on me for my first vehicle, and I found out it was kinda fun wrenching on something that was yours.
As far as my interest in sleepers, it started when I wanted to talk about cars with my parents. Anything that so much as looked sporty was kind of out of the question and would kill any conversation really fast. (Dad was really into trucks, mom liked SUVs) so I would pretend to like things like Corollas, Taurus', and anything that was an American luxury type deal.
first actual car was a 300 SRT-8. Recently gave it to my sister. was a fun car, heavy as shit, unfairly fast for the weight. after that it was kinda like "why do I need to look fast if I -am- fast?".
and now here i am, typing a monologue while I look for an IC for a Scion xB because who doesn't like a boosted box?

>>14438598
i mean, it's easy to say that now (and i realize half the time I was just being a brat because rich)
but i mean it was literally daily, like
>get home from school, generally walking
>change into not-so-nice clothes
>be ready in garage by 5:15 sharp when pops pulls in
>be ready to go through truck with fine wire comb thrice
>dinner
>homework (if applicable)
>check truck again (if pops is feeling restless)
or
>bed
>repeat

weekends were a mixed bag because no schedule means it could be nice but there's the potential of getting dragged out of bed at 4 in the morning because pops thought he heard something funny when he started the truck to go out fishing.
it's easy to like something when you have an interest, it's not easy to like something when you have a forced interest, you know? and it's not like I'm ever going to get that truck (he's giving it to his brother-in-law in the will) so saying "I'm doing it so I don't have to do it later on" is a misnomer.

Even the slow 2 valve base models love to light the rear tires up and swing their ass end out. Though that just kinda reinforces that guys point about them being hard to handle, especially with more power.

That said, they aren't. They handle nicely for their size. An okay sleeper but definitely not as subdued as a lot of other choices because so many non-car people see a crown vic, think 'COP CAR WITH COP MOTOR' and think that they're faster than they are anyways.

The stock cam is okey. The real problem is these damn heads and headers. She can't breathe, captain.

its more like v6 camry tier.

Pretty much every new car now, M8. Everything looks angry af yet provides nothing or just fast 0-60 and call itself sporty. Even the most base VW Golf has angry look of its headlights. Cut the muffler and you've got the same, just with "real" engine.
>>
I think the humble neon is the ultimate sleeper, just build a 2.4l turbocharged.

OP here, surprised this thread is still getting bumps.
After much looking and soul-searching I think a Cobalt SS is what I want.
How does this one look?

>>14440135
I'm checking those out right now to compare the prices/miles with the Cobalt.
>>
>>14440179
SRT-4 /w 140k miles on it.
6,500. Better deal than the SS but the miles worry me. (I prefer less than 120k)

another one with 97k miles, but no pictures.

So I guess the question is Cobalt SS or Neon SRT-4?

This car is fast and handles only in brochure.
>>
>>14440263
if you read the thread you'll find that I've already discarded the car in favor of either a Cobalt SS or a Neon SRT-4, I just haven't decided which one I want.

9-7 aero is pretty good and with its ls2 engine quite a sleeper.

The 9-5 aero/2.3T is also quite good, can occasionally be found with a manual.

as far as reliable, I can't speak to the 9-3s after 2003, but I think the only reason the 9-5 gets a reliability rap is people taking it to non saab mechanics. The car is a bit different and really does benefit from a specialist.

Get yourself a PT cruiser with the turbo and build that mofo to the moon. Bonus points for a white convertible with fake wood paneling.

Get an ion redline instead. Supercharged is best induction

Srt4 swap

Don't do any visual mods, steel wheels+ hubcaps. Stock exhaust but run an electric cutout. Drag radials with hubcaps for extra luls on the weekends

Get a galant vr4, ok on gas and pretty cheap if you can find one. But finding one without being modded to shit and not rusted out is pretty slim. Or go for a Dsm, reliability won't be as good though because #Americanbuildquality
