Bench racers don't like it because it's slow in a straight line. 200hp is a little bit weak even for a classic RWD econocoupe and there is a dead spot around 4000 RPM.

Otherwise it's a fantastic car.
>>
>>14326285
What about the Hyundai Genesis Coupe? I'm thinking of getting a new car and can't choose.

So are most people on this board.

BRZ is a better car than the Genesis. If only go Genesis if you need usable rear seats and more trunk space.

Protip: listen to the automotive journalists and not /o/. It's the 2+2 hardtop miata some of us have wanted for a long time.
>>
Saw one of those in Finland today, it was surprisingly big really, I was expecting it to be like much smaller. Like something akin to a Lotus Elise or an Alfa 4C.
>>
>>14326718
I thought it was surprisingly small. Weird.

Mind you I live in Alberta where everyone drives lifted truuuuuucks.
>>
>>14326722
Oh yeah, I've seen a 3500 Ram once, thing was fucking enormous.
But anyway, the BRZ I saw was almost as big as my Mercedes Benz and the W123 ain't no small car either.

The BRZ was much fatter in my opinion and quite a bit higher too.
>>
the swagalicious owners trigger /o/tists
>>
Does anyone here think the motor is factor that ruins this car? Toyota should of just used the 2zz-ge. The vibe was tuned to around 190hp and lotus pushed it to ~240 with a supercharger. Pairing with subaru doesn't make any sense to me.
>>
>>14326743
Yes, the motor is the weakpoint in the vehicle. It makes like 170 to the wheels on a good day, has a torque valley, and compression too high. All it needs is a lower compression engine pushing out closer to 200 to the wheels and it would have been great and given room for force induction. Instead we got slow with room for forced blown heads.
>>
>>14326743
>Pairing with subaru doesn't make any sense to me.
Yeah, it seems to me the only reason would be that they'd have access to STI parts, but they aren't even making an STI version. No Subaru AWD platform either since its RWD. Who the fuck knows...
>>
>>14326743
If they put anything else it would have body roll like a miata.
>>
>>14326245
Here are the dumb arguments and the very logical and reasonable responses.
>hurrr IS SLOW
It was never meant to be fast, it's supposed to be a fun little car.
>hurrrrrr it cost $27k!!!!
This is a very reasonable price for a brand new car in 2016.
>hurrrr X car cost $1k less!!!
Okay? Not everything will be the exact same cost and the two cars are not equal.
>hurrrrr it wasn't 500whp and $15k brand new
This is basically what people are complaining about. And some people are mad they can't afford a new car so they compare it to cars from 25+ years ago.
>hurr some owners like to stance them
Yeah, welcome to every car ever. There is always some group doing retarded shit to cars.
>>
>>14326743

It needed to be a boxer, because otherwise it would be either prohibitively high up front, ruining the aesthetics of the car, or it would be too pointy at the front, ruining the pedestrian safety of the car. Hence, Toyota paired with Subaru because that's what Subaru has poured R&D money into for decades.

The FA20 isn't a shit engine. It responds very, very well to turbocharging, as evidenced in the new WRX, as well as the Levorg in Japan. It's a good fucking engine, just not if it's left NA. A lot of people who go the forced induction route on their Toyobarus report very substantial power gains. However, the 86 isn't offered with forced induction, for whatever red tape reason you can come up with. Most people say Subaru didn't want it to cannibalize their WRX sales, because they are only allowed to sell a certain number of BRZs as stipulated in the partnership, and that this number wouldn't recoup their losses on the WRX.

Either way, it's a fun car with the best chassis anywhere close to its price point. No, it's not as fast or as practical as a WRX. It has a softer suspension than a Miata. It costs more than some are willing to pay. Still, it looks nice and is a pretty fun car. Just be prepared to justify your purchase to benchracing /o/tists.

How much do you think it would cost to turbocharge it? Is it hard to do with a boxer engine?
>>

>>
>>14326799
100% this.
>>
>>14326829
To do it right. $10k with a shop doing the work. Engine probably can't handle a lot of boost stock, so to turbo it and build the engine, $18k or so.

Also enjoy your lol no warranty.
>>
>>14326829

Most people supercharge it rather than turbo, because the factory turbo setup on the FA20 is a bitch to install and lies below the engine in a little crevice. Prices vary but there's a trillion hits on Google for people who sell forced induction services for the FA20. You'll generally get what you pay for: an off the shelf kit that costs a few hundred probably won't make the power a professionally installed supercharger and tune will.
>>
>>14326829
You can super charge it for half the price and make good power and eliminate the torque valley.
>>
>>14326843
Bahahahaha fullblown does it all with an fp red for 5k incl parts and labor and tune you mong. And dan nyugen or whatever hisgucking name is has his daily boosted for already 40k miles and counting problem free. You are he dumbass that would pay a shop 10k for 40hp you fucking retard omfg you are fucking retarded.
>>
http://www.avoturboworld.com/avoshop/turbo-manual-p-191.html
>>
>>14326829
I wouldn't turbocharge it straight away. Maybe an exhaust, front camber bolts to take out positive camber, different tires minimum, possibly different wheels if you want, and generally just learn to drive the car, get a feel for what you want.
>>
>>14326860
Why you so angry? I don't own one and I'm not google I just took a guess. turbo + labor+ exhaust + fuel upgrades + ECU + gauges +miscellaneous parts.
And you means this http://fullblownmotorsports.com/full-blown-scion-frs-stage-1-base-turbo-kit with NO extra parts included and labor not included? Okay then. See how I said "TO DO IT RIGHT". That implies not just slapping on the most basic shit and crossing your fingers.

>>

idk OP I don't think I've ever heard of a turbocharged boxer engine before.
>>
>>14326245
No turbo and no STI.
Seriously, why didn't the use the WRX engine? It wouldn't eat into the WRX market because people still want AWD.
>>
>>14326788
p much this, I'm glad they made it corner the way it does instead of making a miata clone.
>>
>>14326904
Because Subaru still want to be as Toyota-like as possible.
>>14326764
>what is DI
>what are decompression plates
Also you'll thank that torque dip for good fuel economy, talking to people who've tuned it out of their cars, their mpg went to shit. You won't really hit it when you're going fast anyway.
>>
>>14326904
because the number of BRZs that subaru can sell is tied to the number of 86s/frs's that toyota can sell

even a little demographic cannibalization of the wrx is enough to put subaru off of turboing the fa20 in the brz

>>

About £5k fitted and mapped buy someone like fensport. That's good for about 320hp then you hit the limit of the fuel system so budget for bigger injectors if you want more than that and start thinking about a "bottom end" rebuild north of 420 if it's an everyday car. They ran 2 seasons of the TSS and all the demo work on stock internals at 420 and only swapped out the pistons and con rods when they pushed passed 500.

the stock wheels are also beyond hideous. i have no idea how they thought that was a good idea.

Don't forget the prehistoric suspension.

27k for a BRZ gets you a few options that you'd have to pay extra for on an FRS. And considering it's about the price of a miata with a limited slip as well as the price of an old 86 adjusted for inflation, I'd day it's pretty reasonable..

Just be honest. We get it, you want people to see you in a new car. We get that in your head, displaying status trumps financial sense or the actual driving experience.

So just be honest. You'll catch less shit.

>>14332967
>Costs the same (inflation adjusted) as the old AE86, must be a good deal LOL
Yeah except no. Wages have not kept pace with inflation. Auto technology has progressed by leaps and bounds, there is no reason for it to cost as much as it does and be as crappy as it is... especially when you are Toyota and Subaru with giant, state of the art parts bins.
>>

>>
>>14333045
I agree with your assertion that it is expensive, however in isolation it's still a good car in my opinion.
There are reasons why it costs what it does, but Toyota and Subaru are making a decent margin on these and it is supposed to be affordable (that was one of the design objectives). Obviously it's not Toyota and Subaru's fault people are as poor as they are but that's the reality, and of course being profitable was also one of the objectives (or an unspoken inevitability).
>>
>>14330850
These sedans you're talking about weigh much more than the toyobaru. Also, the 170hp hondas were high performance variants tuned for track.
>>
>>14333074
>however in isolation it's still a good car in my opinion.
Thank you for being honest. I respect the owners a little more now.

When I test drove one, my first thought was about the car itself. It does a good job of being a base level sports car. Next I compared it to the Miata I owned. It had the same willingness to corner but with out all the rattles and the floppy chassis, and it was a coupe and I like coupes.

But then I compared it to all the other cars I have driven. And for 26k there are a lot of other cars I could buy and restore that would end up giving me a much more visceral experience. There is also the freedom of not being locked into a loan.

So I'll be honest back. What it comes down to in the end is I rather build what I want rather than buy somebody elses idea of what I want. If I am going to do that, the toyobaru platform is an utterly ridiculous place to start.

If you want to learn how to drive and your parents are willing to buy you a new car. It's a great car for that.

If you want to own a sporty car and don't want to get your hands dirty, its a great car for that.

If you want to dabble in car culture and maybe do I/H/E or a track day, it's a great car for that.

But if you are the kind of person that thinks about cars in most of your free time. You are really serious about wanting to have a platform that will expand and grow with you. You want to build a monster machine down the line. It is a terrible choice. And I resent the owners that try to shill it like it is a good choice for this, they always get backed into the corner of saying "Its new!" which is why I wish they would just come out and say that is the only reason they like it.
>>
>>14333214
well I used to own a peugeot 205 gti that i spent a fortune rebuilding. it was fun at the time and what i wanted but i can totally understand how it isn't for anyone and isn't something i'd recommend to anyone.
the gt86 is okay for someone who knows what he's getting into. if you want to move but not downshift or carry speed then i'd tell you it's not for you. it's takes some determination to get it going but that's the fun part (for me).
for someone like me who doesn't have a garage space it's great. i can park it on the street and it won't get vandalised or stolen and insurance is reasonable.
if it was priced at fiesta levels instead of focus then it would have been big. it is clearly overpriced imo.

Sure you care, it looks news and modern. For 15k you could buy ANY S13 or S14 on craigslist and completely restore it to factory. For 25k you could pay somebody else to do it. You didn't do that because at the end of the day you don't want to be seen in a old car.

Its totally fine if you don't want to be seen in an old, unfashionable car. Just be honest about it and stop pretending like that didn't factor into your buying decision. The BRZ/FRS doesn't have the weeb autism associated with it that driving a 90s car does, if you ask any normie they are going to say it looks like a new sports car. The social price you are pretending to pay is imaginary.

That's why my 3 other cars are all more than 15 years old right?

That's why I don't take any of my cars to shops, and do all my own work right?

Why on earth would I pay absurd ricer tax on a 25 year s13 and then proceed to pay someone to restore it for me?

Look at it this way, an Evo IX was roughly 32k new. 10 years later it is impossible to find a clean evo for under 25k. Is it really such a dumb idea to buy certain cars new instead of paying a good chunk of money on someone else's old project?

>Look at it this way, an Evo IX was roughly 32k new. 10 years later it is impossible to find a clean evo for under 25k. Is it really such a dumb idea to buy certain cars new instead of paying a good chunk of money on someone else's old project?

Yes it is dumb, especially if you can restore a project to like new condition for less than the inflation adjusted price of the car when it was new.

Tell me, what is wrong with a car that has been restored like new. Is this the seat fart thing again? Is it not as good because a strangers farts have infused the seat foam?

They had to hit co2 and emissions faggotry. Read it on their site. Blame Obama

It's still impressive making 100hp/ liter
My 2.5 makes 180

I enjoy restoring cars, and I still do it even though I also have a new car. Why is this so hard for you to understand?

this board is more cancerous than /b/

Idk, even /b/ is at least funny sometimes. /o/ just repeats the same unfunny shit forever.

As if anyone on the entirety of 4chan needs a reason to shit on literally anything in the universe. Shit posters probably don't even give a fuck one way or another about any given topic, they just get off on feeling superior without any repercussions because they are such disgusting "victims" in the real world.

That said, I just finished up a 3 year lease of an FR-S and had a great time with it. Knew it wasn't fast going in and didn't care. Tons of fun on back roads and got 30mpg for the slog on the highway. It did handle like shit in the rain when I had the shitty stock prius tires on there. Snowed a few times and as long as I wasn't retarded, I had no troubles. But I live in Tx, so rain and snow were infrequent issues. Had no mechanical problems whatsoever. Only complaints are tiny gas tank (weight), its a bit noisy inside (insulation is heavy and takes up space), and the stock tires sucked, went through them faster than shit through a tin horn.

>Look guise! It handles but it has no balls! Totally worth every penny if I dare say! XD

Retards like you make this promising board the cancer it is.

What the fuck does that even mean?

I'd love to get a red frs before all the new bullshit rear camera mandates. Looks like I'm going to have to buy used now since I don't work atm.

Everyone here cracks jokes on these things but they truly are modern classics. I would buy two in a heartbeat if I could. Have a nice stock example and another one modded. It would be good for comparison purposes too.

I think its out of /o/'s price range. I get the feeling most people on this board buy cars based of hp per dollar.
>>
>>14330404
it feels toquier because it is. The Fiesta has 202lb-ft,versus the FR-S/BRZ 150lb-ft
>>
>>14326251
Mfw he was right
>>
>>14334150
Let's be real here. A BRZ is a way better car than a new stock Swhatever ever was. Granted, with mods and 20 years of depreciation it's another story.

The torque dip is what turns me off but the cheaper option than turbocharged is to get some new headers and tune to get rid of the torque dip
