It does if you're known for your AWD prowess in rally racing.
By default FWD cars are at a big disadvantage because you're asking the tires to do 3 things. That's not to say I don't like FWD cars or that they're aren't some awesome cars using that set up.

Eh, not really. Ausfalians still charge $8-10k for a GC8 STI and that's for one that's been driven half away across the country.

Besides, you guys have all those cheap ass American classics. I think it's only fair we get cheap Skylines and Supras.
>>
>>14322802
>hyperbole

2.5RSs are retarded expensive for what they are, doubly so if you live in a snow state. And you're still dealing with a rusty fucking car if you live anywhere it snows (because its a 2.5RS, none of those cars were left garaged when it snowed out).

Subaru Tax is real. 02-03 WRXs are still fucking $5000-8000 cars even though they're almost 14 years old, a lot of them now with rusty 1/4s.

>>14322793
>>14322814
At least you have the option. $6-10k there really isn't anything sold here that's quicker than a late 90s Evo/STi. Maybe the US E36 M3 (which was still a very good car) or a Cobalt SS Turbo.

Cheap American Classics aren't very good at the whole handling part, and the "cool" ones aren't cheap (even the 80s Fox 5.0s and IROCs are going up now that the people who had them "new" are in their 50s).

In a straight line, an LS1 F-body will fucking trash either of the things you listed

On a road course it might be a bit more difficult to find a car that would beat them for $10k, but I imagine an AP1 S2000 would at least be close enough to catching them.

Here is a very short list of potential competitors under $10k
>300ZX TT
>3000GT VR4/Stealth TT
>C4 Corvette
>Maybe a C5 Corvette if you can find one
>MR2 Turbo
>2nd gen DSM with some sick mawdzzzz
>>
>>14322959
I think the issue isn't that LS1 F-bodies handle badly, but more that they aren't very communicative.
>>
>>14322959
While this post is correct (and an AP1 makes FAR more sense on any track than any Subaru)..

I will tear apart each of the cars listed and why they don't compare to an Impreza/Evo

>300ZX TT
Stupid overpriced too for what you get.. not even fast, nor can you easily find parts nowadays. Hell to work on as well from personal experience.
>3000GT VR4/Stealth TT
It won't ever leave the driveway. Again, personal experience
>C4 Corvette
Worst of the cars listed here. Like.. hardly anything redeeming about it
>Maybe a C5 Corvette if you can find one
Lots of C5s. Great value for a fun and fast car... however it does all those things and lacks practicality of what many people want.. which is to drive their toy everyday.
>MR2 Turbo
Solid choice. Takes aspects of both the 300zx (not much aftermarket support) and the C5 (not practical). A bit overpriced, but I think you get more out of it than the rest of the choices.. so it's a bit called for.
>2nd gen DSM with some sick mawdzzzz
This is just a poverty way of saying you wish you had a Subaru.

The Subaru does everything well. Simple as that. That's why they are so fucking overpriced.
>>
>>14321366
Mazda is the only purist one left!
>>
>>14322959
>>14322959
>In a straight line, an LS1 F-body will fucking trash either of the things you listed

Yeah...good luck; Car & Driver actually got the Evo VI to do the 1/4 in 13.9 and the 22B in 13.5 seconds. This was back in the late 90s when the only experience with powerful AWD cars were DSMs, so you bet they were absolute dogshit at launching them.

Best Motoring 0-400 meter times were closer to low 13s-high 12s with more experience/willingness to nuke the driveline. Remember, what makes them magical is that they're 270-300whp cars in 2700-2900lb tin can shells with retard-short gearing and AWD. The Evo 8/9 we got was slower than the older, lighter Evo 5/6s.

E36 M3/Cobalt SS Turbo sure, but those are probably the only cars that can approach the older Evos/STis in handling for the same amount. The M3s especially have race experience especially.

>>14322985
Pretty much all correct.

The C5 Corvette is the closest, and its nowhere nearly as practical as a car based off of a station wagon economy car for Japanese grandmothers.

The DSM can't turn for shit but will make more power than the STis without a doubt way easier.
>>
>>14322979
They really don't, they just rely on sheer grip to corner.

The problem with a lot of American cars is that they're not confidence inspiring because of their lack of communication. Its why cars like the FRS/BRZ, RX8, Miatas, 1990s Hondas, and BMW 3-Series are seen as cars that handle well.

Their raw numbers might be lower than a car like the F-Body (which has 275 wide summer tires on all four corners), but its easier for a average joe to drive one of those fast than a F-Body because you can tell what the front wheels are doing through its feedback/kickback on the steering wheel, you can feel close to the limits of traction through the seat how the car's responding, you can manipulate the car easily mid-corner, and if you go into a corner too hot you can usually save it without the car "biting" back (like a MR2).

The F-Body's weight (3300-3500lbs) isn't helpful either, nor is their floppy chassis and shitty rear suspension. You can fix the rear suspension but the car still feels "dead" like you need to seriously go fast to feel any sensation of speed. There was a tripfag on /o/ that had a WS6 with a bunch of Strano parts thrown at it (Bilsteins, Watts Link, etc). Got rid of it for a NA Miata on coilovers.
>>
>>14323163
I wonder what the deal is with the F-body then, I know exactly how terrible my foxbody corners. How does that feeling get lost coming back to the driver? I can feel my rear axle shifting left and right (fucking gr8 job engineers, no panhard bar or anything) , and I can feel my tires reaching their grip limit pretty well, and I can feel my lack of ackerman.
>>
>>14323042

>good luck

Who has that "Measuring the Competition" article screencap from Fast Fords and Muscle Mustangs where they were bitching about how the LS1 Camaro kept running 12.9 and decimating them despite it being hot out that day?

The LS1 Camaro is certainly faster and Best Motoring times are always ridiculous on AWD cars because they redline clutch dump that shit.
>>
>>14322941
As in the "look at how dumb I am for paying that tax" side?
>>
>>14322985

Are those cars really overpriced in America? I posted the GTO VR4, Z32, and SW20 because they're very often less than $5k here and thus significantly cheaper than the STI. Fuck me if they're over $10k in the US somehow.

Anyway if you need a fast sedan or wagon for $10,000 USD then you still have options, they just won't be as fast as the STI. They'll probably last longer and get better mileage though. I hesitate to suggest any other options because apparently I am very out of touch with how much shit costs south of the border.

VR4s are 6-8k depending on the condition, but again doesn't matter because it'll be broken ALL THE FUCKING TIME anyways. really unfortunate, because they drive like a dream when they work.

turbo 300zxs are still 8-10k for good examples

same goes for SW20s

Subarus cost the same amount (little more for nice ones) and do the jobs much better.
