Electric motors. Gotta replace the whole unit.

>>
>>14286640

False.

While there is less to go wrong individuals parts can go wrong in an electric motor.

They can be rewound
The have bearings
A good winding can be put in a new case
Brushes
Contacts

People rebuild electric motors and generators all the time.
>>
>>14286627
The engines on any subcompact smart car like thing.

You practically have to drop the engine to do any work on it.
>>
>>14286860

I have come across small cars like the Nissan micra and Toyota vitz that have much better engine access than most large SUV's and better yet, every fucking crossover
>>
>>14286647
>Mid engine boxers (914)
At least with the Boxster/Cayman they knew it would be a pain to service, so they made it a lot easier by giving them engine access hatches.
>>
>>14286790
The company I work for rebuild industrial electric motors up to 75k kW. The motor in an ev car shouldn't be too much different.
>>
>>14286936
Thats actually pretty cool
>>
>>14286790
I imagine service will be like many other parts where instead of rebuilding the original motor, you just swap it with a reman and send the bad one off to be fixed for the next guy

Jesus christ.

>literally 4 different chain drives
>so many turns made on chain guides
>chain literally makes a 90 degree turn on a chain guide for no reason.

I could design that motor to eliminate three chains and eliminate six sprockets while still accomplishing the same thing (chain driven oil and water pumps).

German engineering is fucking stupid.

You better discern that the people that designed those things had their reasons to do so.

Section 88 of the 1988 Road Traffic Act (RTA), sub-section 7 paragraph (a) states: 'a person who is not the holder of a licence may act as steersman of a motor vehicle, being a vehicle on which a speed limit of five miles per hour or less is imposed by or under section 86 of the [1984 c. 27.] Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, under the orders of another person engaged in the driving of the vehicle who is licensed in that behalf in accordance with the requirements of this Part and Part IV of this Act...'

http://www.bls.gov/ooh/production/stationary-engineers-and-boiler-operators.htm

well if you want to get really into it, you need at minimum 5 licenses and yearly inspections in order to not go directly to jail and or fines.

or you could stay under 14 psi and 1/10 hp.
than and ONLY then you could work on one in your backyard.
>>
>>14287280
Most of their old stuff is fine, but anything they make can absolutely NOT take neglect.
They've gone to shit over the last 15-20 years though.
>>

>>
>>14287290
Not the original guy,
but im not understanding that, why can't he work on his engine in his backyard? what you quoted has to do with driving a motor vehicle. How does that have anything to do with a hobbyist dicking around in his backyard?
>>
>>14287309
CHEBBY HELL YEAH MERICA
>design from the '60s with a few improvements, manufactured in mexico
>>
>>14287259
There is literally no reason to have separate chain/sprocket runs for each cam bank. Then a seperate chain/sprocket run off that crank to run each cam bank, then another different sprocket run just to drive the oil and water pumps. That's fucking stupid.

Just the oil/water pump drive itself is fucking stupid. There's no reason you couldn't run a chain around those three sprockets without that crazy chain guide setup. All you would have to do is change the rotation of your water/oil pumps.
>>
>>14287396
>design from the '60s with a few improvements

>had their reason

Yea, the reason is VAG engineers are fucking idiots

That or they intentionally design shit to be difficult to fix and prone to breakage to bring service jewgolds into their dealerships.

Notice BMW can make a high performance chain driven DOHC setup that isn't a clusterfuck? Pic related.
>>
>>14287412
but then you couldnt use the same oil pump from a jetta and the same water pump from a porche, thus decreasing profit margin by .2 cents per car.
>>
>>14287301
Chain speed doesn't matter. Sprocket size dictates the speed of the driven component.

This

I've serviced electric motors before, though it really depends on how they are made for how easy it is. Never rebuilt a commutator before though, that is an art in and of itself.

Fuck this engine and everything about its goddamned timing chain.
>>
>>14289370

>water pump fails
>engine explodes
>>
>>14289481
>>14289370

Here's a fact you might not know, but I do.
That fucking water pump has a PLASTIC impeller.
You heard me

I tried to save a 2.7 that suffered the fate of having a water pump failure cause a massive coolant ingress into the engine oil sump
I did manage to save it, actually, it only took about 30 hours of work.
Never again.

The goddamned chain is IMPOSSIBLE to adjust, and the tensioners are powered by engine oil pressure, so if you don't have any of that to start out with while trying to install the chain, it can jump off of the piss ass tiny sprocket way at the bottom of the engine and then you have to start ALL the fuck over.

It sucks.

somebody please explain why bmw uses plastic for their impellers and guides. i just...i can't deal.

>>14286790
Since most motors used in cars have no brushes or physical commutation, you won't have to worry about replacing them. That being said, you'd have to hope the motor controller holds up

By that logic every fucking piston engine is an "antique" and should use more "sophisticated" ways of making power.
