This is happening and all new cars are getting LCD touch screens to double as backup view screens.
Also, its easier for mfgrs to build 1 display and drop it all vehicles than to design a bunch of different dashboards

My mom bought a new toyota a couple years back with a LCD screen/radio. When you turn the car on, the audio starts instantly but it takes several seconds for the electronics to load up so you can turn down/off all that noise. Even pressing/turning the knob does absolutely nothing until everything loads. That shit is the most annoying thing ever when I need to get in her car for whatever reason, I have to listen to super loud shit for several seconds.

I liked the physical buttons and potentiometers that you could even adjust with the entire system turned off.
>>
>>14246512
Is there anything other than time and effort keeping you from installing a traditional radio system? How long until we see aftermarket dash replacements with a small screen for the backup cam and traditional radio controls?
>>
>>14246509
yes those toddlers should pay the ultimate price for not knowing their drunk daddy is backing his truck out of the garage during chalk time.

Not saying it should be mandatory but to say the kids are at fault is ignorant.
>>
>>14246551
>Is there anything other than time and effort keeping you from installing a traditional radio system?
Well there's the fact that it's not my car, cost, practicality, and the integration with the rest of the vehicle. It's hard for aftermarket parts to interface with other vehicle systems like OEM ones do.
>>
>>14245686

Well, yeah. I'm asking generally. By the time I'm 40 every car will probably have this shit, so I want a way around it.

As long as you know your wires, you should be able to run power and speaker wire to any old stereo. You'd just have to make due with splicing wires instead of plugging in a harness. Worst part would be fabricating a shelf to weld to the interior and bolt the stereo to, I think.

The roofing company I work for uses cube vans, light duty pickup trucks, and those really tall, old diesel trucks that sound like semis.
Granted, we're using really old trucks. But that's because new, expensive trucks are full of new, expensive shit that gets broken by filthy roofers and equipment that's not tied down.
Every contractor we work alongside (when doing new roofs for buildings under construction) uses shitbox old vehicles for work.

If microsoft can make it illegal for you to alter the kernal of their software, or samsung can sue you for altering their TVs, it's probably not a stretch to assume that car manufacturers are going to make it illegal to alter their gps/telemetrics/data recorder/sending unit in any way that would result in the fuctions of the device being altered/stopped.

That, or they'd just make the dash screen integral to operating the ECU/mechanics. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if pulling a jeep dash system out wouldn't make the jeep inoperable from what i remember reading about those hackers being able to control.

The fact that it's capable of having many parts replaced is a testament to simplicity.

I DD a 52 year old car and work on new ones 8 hours a day. There is no getting around simple = less likely to break, because there are less things to break. Imagine a current car in 50 years, vs. a 1966 car now, of course the 1966 car is much more likely to survive it's 50 year cycle due to construction techniques and simplicity.

>How did this happen?
Trucks became daily drivers instead of tools for getting work done. I kinda agree, I miss the hell out of my spartan 72 GMC Suburban I had in H.S.
>>
>>14245637
Who cares first thing i'd do outside of warranty is replace the screen with something with better DPI and have full manual controls fuck touch screens when driving

Unresposive and dangerous.

Do you see racecars with 20" tacky lcd's? NO you dont
>>
>>14247330
>Unresposive
They're designed like that so you don't fuck around with them while the car is in motion.
>>
>>14245694
>mandatory ABS systems for all new vehicles
what the fuck
>>
>>14247345
I never used a touchscreen but ones without haptic feedback or physical buttons fucking suck
>>
>>14247345
>reach down to touchscreen
>can't adjust volume or whatever

And now, for the $100,000 question, what will the average harried soccer mom or caffeinated wage jockey do when they're driving down the freeway at 75 and they can't make their stereo change volume?

A) Pull off the road, stop, and fix the problem
B) Look down at the device without stopping and attempt to fix the problem
C) Ignore the problem entirely and drive to their destination
D) Grow wings and soar into orbit on fairydust farts

This isn't rocket science.

Cars still have volume wheels and some even have controls on the steering wheels but you can't start plotting hyperspace coordinates while it's moving
>>
>>14247385
Of course not, fairy dust is magic you.
>>
>implying having a rear facing camera and display isn't the greatest thing to happen for towing trailers
>not realizing that cameras and LCD's are cheap as fuck these days

people who are buying a brand new truck probably want some nice features

>muh basic work truck

my 1991 b2200 disagrees with this statement.

do you see racecars with stereos? or heated electric seats? etc

you're an idiot lol

>tfw aftermarket head-unit with bluetooth tablet+usb master race
>>
>>14247432
I have no issue with useful features.
I have issue with sensitive electronics in a work vehicle.
Is that shit going to stand up when 3 or 4 mantanks covered in mud, blood, and shit are rocking and slamming shit around the cab at the end of a 10 hour workday?
>>
Lifelong truck fag here, back up cameras and lcd screens are not the fucking devil holy shit. Dont want it? Dont buy it.
>>

Nuh phablet master race
one thingo to rule them all

there is one on your cellphone. ever drop it? still works. right?

>>14247468

>closed system

you could say the same for the entire network of modules and sensors on a modern vehicle
>>
>>14247500
Not the camera m8, the screen and shit in the cab.

Nokia is forged in Valhalla nigga

I don't see who wouldn't want a backup camera in a truck.

It makes backing up to a trailer a one person job instead of two.

It allows you to see behind a massive truck. (A RAM 2500 tailgate sits at like 5'6" with the tailgate up).

It allows you to see behind the 24' behemoth.
>>
>>14247600
Don't understand how you couldn't figure out how to back up to your trailer after the first couple times. I can back up to my camper, stop 5 inches away, get out and see what small correction I need to make, and generally stick it without any other motions. I only haul that trailer every other year or so too.
>>
>>14247944
>get out and see what small correction I need to make

or

>look at the screen on the dash in your $40,000 truck

there's a reason poor people don't have nice things. it's not because you don't want them or couldn't use it, its because you couldn't afford it.

my jeep doesn't even have a passenger side mirror. that doesn't mean i wouldn't drive a new grand cherokee

>not offroad enough
>too nice
>too expensive
>fancy screens and leather etc

hurr durrr
>>
>>14247972
As far as it concerns me, it's just not an issue...like, at all. I gotta walk out there anyways to lift the trailer up above the hitch anyways, and take the lock off and lift the latch...just getting everything done at the same time.

It's just like hearing people complain about driving a manual, it's really only an issue to you if you don't drive that often.

Those cars have HEI distributors, not point type. Still some electrical fuckery there.

topkek why do rednecks and squidbikers do this so much.
Shit i live near philly and they do this.

It's because backup cameras are becoming a mandated safety feature.

I'm more curious about how you time traveled here from 1954.

They use LCDs for everything nowadays, man.
Fast food places use LCD screens for menu boards.
At the gas station they have a cooler with see-through LCD as the door which plays ads for Bud Light.
Lots of vehicles use LCD displays for the gauges.
Lots of people carry multiple LCD screens with them every day (cellphone, tablet, smartwatch).
