Everyone has questions, o has better tailored answers than fishing on google (usually).

What are the pros and con on coming to a stop and leaving the car in 1st gear vs neutral?
>>
>>14231536
*cons

fingers are still stiff as fuck
>>
Nobody knows
That's all I can gauge on /o/
Nobody has a solid fucking explanation on driving manual
It's why I'm still stuck on automatic
>>
>>14231546
There's a lot of transmission specialists on o, give or take.

This is a big question for me because I've seen it go either way when it comes to literally ALL drivers.
>>
>>14231536
One way will wear your throwout bearing faster but you'll already be in gear ready to go when needed.

The other way has almost no wear but you'll need to switch to 1st gear before you can go.
>>
>>14231546
Obvious bait, you probably just refuse to read or listen why manual is better
>>
>>14231546
There is multiple ways to drive numbnuts. It's not rocket science.
>>
if you leave the car in first gear with the clutch in:
>risk of runaway car if you get rear ended
>stress on your throw out bearing
>makes your left leg tired depending on car
>stupid

if you put the car in neutral and rest your foot on the brake:
>you have to put the car in 1st when you're ready to go, a .5 second delay

I always put it in neutral

>throwout bearing
I'm assuming this difficult and expensive to replace?

So I guess the rule of thumb should be to stay in gear at stop signs and MAYBE stop and go traffic??
>>
>>14231559
Switching to first gear literally takes half a second, less if you have muscle memory.
>>
>>14231572
if you're sitting there for more than like 5 ish seconds I'd pop it in neutral
>>
How low should your RPMs be before switching to neutral/preventing a stall
>>
Hey guise my shifter doesn't like to re center after pushing it all the way left in neutral. seems like it's sticking on something. could it be the bushings in there? or is it the return springs in the transmission or something?
>>
>>14231596
~1000 rpm. Basically wherever your car idles.
>>
>>14231596
It depends entirely on what engine you have. Some engines stall later than others, because different engines make different torque at the same RPM.
>>
>>14231596
Depends on the car, newer cars are more forgiving.

Just experiment.
>>
>>14231582
I don't even drive a manual on a daily basis, and I know that. Besides inpatient chucklefucks who are behind you, a half-second delay isn't much at all.
>>
>>14231596
If you're first driving manual, I always suggest buyig a beater car like a corolla. That way you get the basics down and wont be afraid to stall it.

Normally it's around 1000 rpm, but it's typically around where your engine's idle speed is.
>>
Is it possible to go up or down more than 1 gear in one throw (like 6th to 4th, 3rd to 1st)
>>
>>14231663
Yes. I downshift from 5th (my highest gear) to 3rd for engine braking whenever im coming up on a light. Make sure you rev match tho

If you are racing, what's the best way to change gears quickly

I've heard people say you have to clutch in all the way, or you should just kick to the bite point, or unless you have an upgraded clutch to just not do fast gear changes at all
>>
>>14231678
What about going up 2, 3, 4 gears
>>
>>14231679
Depends if you want your clutch/transmission to last more than 5 miles.
>>
>>14231702
I want to be as fast as possible with minimal to no wear

everytime I hear about powershifting I physically become ill
>>
>>14231536
Leaving the car in gear will ensure that should your car rolls, it will have maximum resistance. It's an in-case kind of thing.

There is literally no con to leaving it in first though, unless you're brain-dead and don't make sure you're in the right gear at all times.
>>
>>14231679
Dump and pump
>>
>>14231663
Your gearbox might make it tougher than usual to switch gears without double clutching but it's possible and usually okay.

Coasting on clutch in 5th/6th/7th and then switching to 1st is usually pretty difficult without resetting the gear selector through a double clutch.
>>
>>14231738
Obviously I'm talking when you're at the appropriate speed, i.e. at a fucking standstill
>>
>>14231571
>risk of runaway car if you get rear ended
This is the exact opposite of what will happen. If you have it in neutral your car is going to roll away. In first, your foot will come off the clutch too fast and the car will stall, providing some decent resistance.
Throwout bearing is valid but everything else is eh. If you're not the first person in line at a stoplight feel free to pop it in neutral and take your foot off the clutch. Otherwise you're retarded and are going to slow down the flow of traffic.
>>
>>14231715
You have two options if you don't want to fuck your shit up senpai
1. Shift normally (as in let the revs drop so it's a smooth shift)
2. Shift as fast as possible while still fully pressing the clutch down (it'll bang up your drivetrain among other things but is still considerably less shitty than partial clutch usage)
>>
>>14231688
A lot of times if I'm speeding up from 0 to about 55 I'll just go 1-2-6. Just let the revs drop to wherever it would normally be in 6th before letting the clutch out from the 2-6 shift.
>>
>>14231536
>Leaving in first at a red light
>left leg starts to cramp up
Solved.
>>
>>14231760
>Shift normally (as in let the revs drop so it's a smooth shift)

wat
>>
>>14231790
Let's say you're at 4,000 in 2nd gear and if you shifted to 3rd gear it'd drop to 3,000. What you want to do is basically upshift rev matching: keep the clutch in while the revs drop from 4,000 to 3,000 THEN let the clutch out in 3rd.
>>
>>14231795
>upshift rev matching
>mfw this is a thing
>mfw have been driving manual for over 10 years and didn't know this existed
>mfw I have no face

SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP

Holding the clutch all the way in does NOT cause excessive throwout bearing wear. That part is designed to be used in such a way, it always has pressure put upon it. Maybe MAYBE this was a problem in 1935, but it is not now.

For all manuals, if you want your transmission to last forever, learn to single declutch and rev match while shifting after you start to move. The process is simple

use the gas pedal to set the engine speed such that there is zero load on the transmission. A very LIGHT amount of gas is what is right.

At this point, WITHOUT touching the clutch, the transmission should effortlessly slide out of gear.

Now, for a DOWN shift, press the gas pedal in to boost your rpm +~500
For an UP shift, let your foot off of the gas to lower rpm by -~500

These steps so far are those nescecary for a no-clutch shift, however those are usually trickyer to handle in traffic and often lead to grinding when you screw up.

Now, simply press the clutch in and shift into the next gear, then let the clutch out. If your rpm matching is right (for this you can be +/- 10% off and it won't really matter) and let the clutch out.

This is a very fast, very smooth shift method that minimizes wear on your transmission.

Manual sure is rocket science for you guys.

TIL you can shift out of a gear into neutral without your clutch. How the fuck does it work?!
>>
>>14231813
I never heard the term used but the concept itself eludes people. It literally is the same thing as rev matching downshifts in principle.

>>14231826
You still take your foot off the gas, stupid

>>14231829
Yes it does
>>
Manual is the norm in my country. Old ladies who can't drive for shit and ride the clutch all the way don't have to fix their clutch systems until well above 100000km and it has been that way for ages. But sure, let /o/ worry about "throwout bearing wear"...

>What are the pros and con on coming to a stop and leaving the car in 1st gear vs neutral?

Only people who have skipped leg day put their cars in neutral at lights.
>>
I'm already on neutral before coming to a complete stop. I dunno why people think it takes a significant amount of time to shift from neutral to first gear.

Is this a new meme?

Do these people even drive a car, let alone a manual? Fuck, next these people are gonna say don't use flappy paddles in an automanual/DCT because it wears the gears and clutches out.
>>
>>14232155
I know a throwout bearing is a wear item, but you can make it last much longer very easily just by putting it in neutral at a light.
>>
how do I into manual
>>
>>14231839
you just pull it out of gear while letting out the gas

>>14232116
hydraulic clutches can be heavy too

>>14232180
this. bearings have limited life, using the bearing reduces it's life. it's that simple.
