BAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. My dream car. How much did you buy it for? Mileage? Condition?
>>
>>14228369
104k miles on it
Great condition
Bought it on the cheap from an old couple moving north

The reverse will break.
Then the third gear will break.
Then the transmission will break.
Replace as much rubber as you can, it is all worn out.

The turbo will leak oil
The motor for the top will break
If it hasn't rusted, it will. Even in CA

How positively weird/unique are 90's Saabs? I like unconventional things.

Also are they reliable and not decent in terms of cost-of-ownership/insurance?

fwd luxury sports car
turbocharged engine
backwards longitudinal engine orientation
transmission = engine oil sump
transmission takes engine oil
faster than a same-era porsche turbo from a roll
rally heritage

They're pretty quirky
>>
>>14228679
Really weird. In the 900 the serpentine belt is close to the firewall, engine is reversed (longitudinal), slant mounted, and it sits over the transmission that sends power to the front wheels.

Is it really luxurious though? Not really. Just safe and well-built/over engineered (sometimes too much)

Just installed their mid pipe sounds pretty good with my muffler delete. Not too loud and almost no drone

Buddy just picked up a 93 900 non turbo s vert. For 450$. Just about ni rust at all. 157k when the odo stopped working so no idea on milage but it runs fine. Stayed away from the turbos for reliability reasons as its his first car and ge can't afford expensive repairs and is doing most of it himself. Only real issue with the car is exactly like the ones stated above, tip motor barely works and tranny is glass. His 2nd gear syncro is shot. 1-2 needs to be done at 1100rpm or it'll grind. 3-2 is a nogo, but he's happy.

Seems like trannys go fast in these because almost every one ge ever looked at had some sort of tranny issue.

Can one of you explain the tranny oil thing?, so the whole tranny just uses sump oil from the motor for lubrication?
>>
>>14228271
in my 92 the pinion bearing had to be replaced. If it starts to hum on the highway you MUST replace it immediately. If the pinion bearing fails it will destory the transmission. The transmission is unique to that car and starts around 2000 or so used.
The power top needed to have fluid purged replaced.
IAC will need to be cleaned out.
The temp switch to turn on the fans needed to be replaced.
Rheostat for a/c heater needed to be replaced
Speedo gear failed.

Those are the issues i have had with my 92 turbo vert which has 250k+ (i haven't replaced the speedo gear so mileage is a rough estimate)

>Can one of you explain the tranny oil thing?, so the whole tranny just uses sump oil from the motor for lubrication?

It does not use the engines oil. The tranny uses 10w-30, there is a drain and fill bolt on the passenger side of the engine towards the front. I'm thinking 18mm but not exactly sure.

I had one a couple of years ago. Dark blue four door saloon. I felt like Han Solo most of the time, espacially because of the looks you got from both guys and girls. You are a member of an exclusive community, every other Saab-owner will smile and wave. It's the way it is. The car is fantastic, it is almost like driving a danish piece of furniture. Pic related. My old friend.
>>
>>14231223
The saab community is arguably the nicest community
Probably because its mostly old dudes
>>
>>14231272
Yeah, and they aren't the kind of old dudes that get angry with imigrants, and thinks everyone should just fuck off. They're the kind of guys that has some sick stories to tell, because they worked as engineers or professors or architechts. Fucking fantastic.
I drive a Volvo now, and I had to take it for the yearly checkup the other day. The first thing I noticed when I entered the door at my local Volvo dealership, was six other fellows just like me, just 40 years older. Grey hair, checkered shirts and round glasses. Except these guys wasn't exactly what I imagined. They were nice, for sure, but they weren't my old Saab buddies.

Same as a large majority of factory 4x4 transfer cases out there.
There's literally nothing wrong with chain drives, so long as they're adequate.

I dunno about a 1991 but I was working on a 2002 recently and that was the dumbest fucking car with the most ridiculous combination of fasteners everywhere on it.

Thanks saab

>>14234136
that isn't anecdotal, pretty much every 900 owner lives in fear of his gearbox.

hell go to any forum and search for gearbox, pinion, or hp increase.

>>14236739
I have not encountered a single etorx bolt anywhere on my 2001, lots of sweet glorious torx, but no etorx.. where did you find the etorx?

How is Saab for cost of ownership, for designs prior to 2000 when GM only owned 50% of the company?

>>14238564
meh
>>
>>14238564
the last fully saab saab was the 79 to 92 saab 900. The saab 9000 was a joint with alfa.

As far as cost of ownership.. a 93 to 98 saab 900 n/a 5 speed is a little fucking tank. Not much is going to go wrong with it. ever. The 93 to 98 saab 900's used shitty turbos.. they will fail at 120k or so.

The saab 9000 aeros are pretty stout, i wouldn't imagine any problems. The saab 9000s that are n/a are good to, the ones with garrett turbos will go through turbos ever 120k or so.
>>
>>14239013
I'm looking at a 2000 9-3 though
>>14238729
What
>>
>>14239026
I have a 2001 9-3 se. I would only consider the SE as that will have the better mitsubishi turbo, larger intercooler and a few other nice things.

It is also much more likely to have had regular oil changes. The car is good, however there is a mechanical weak spot and that is sludge. If it has had regular oil changes with synthetic then it will be fine. If it hasn't.. it may not be fine.

Check for a PVC 6 update, google that if you don't know what it means.

other common issues are the SID display will be broken, just needs the ribbon cable replaced, its pretty easy, you can get the ribbon cable from amazon, get the self adhesive one, not the solder one.

If it has higher mileage it may be do for a suspension overhaul, in particular the strut mount bearings, its a cheap part, but requires suspension disassembly for the most part.

The DIC might need replacing, you can prevent this with fresh plugs ever 15 to 30k. OEM DIC are the only ones that work, and they are about 300bucks. Throwing in a new set of 3 dollar copper plugs ever 10k to 15k will keep the DIC happy forever.

I bought mine when it had 140k miles on it, It now has 210k miles.. i did replace the DIC at about 200K before i went on a 1400 mile road trip. I do need to rebuild the suspension, but I drive it about 700 miles a week and no problems so far.
