Where is everyone at that's getting coated in ice? The mountains? I went up to MI last week and it was only like 34°
>>

>Needles siting at 80

How do the air brake pressures work in a truck? All I know is that if you release the brake pipe pressure, the brakes apply, like in a train. What is the full release pressure?
>>
>>14217443
Snowed yesterday in Michigan and Ohio. Got into the single digits around Chicago, but it was in the teens near Detroit. Saw about two dozen trucks broken down between Toledo and Detroit this morning, so I'm guessing it's the guest cold snap of the season out here.

That was my tank pressure. It was dumping air as fast it was compressing it so the pressure wouldn't build. Usually stop with the application needle around 30psi, but it goes as high as pic related. (Middle gauge in the second column from the right)
>>
>>14217471
Ahh, I see. In the locomotive the reservoir runs about 130-135psi, and the brake pipe is 90psi full release (though I think some passenger trains run at 110 instead of 90)
>>
>>14217443
Southern Indiana for me. It was 51F and a steady rain just before midnight Saturday night. By 0600 Sunday the temp was in the teens and there was about four inches of snow on top of about an inch of ice. Sunday was not fun.

>>14217459
>30 psi for a normal stop
Holy crap, I'm flipping out when it takes 20 at 80k.
>>
>>14217658
I read the graduation on my gauge wrong. Usually run 20psi into a stop.

The rain in northern Indiana was shit at night on Friday and Saturday night. Of course I ran rt2 across so I couldn't see shit. Ended up staying in Angola, and oversleeping until it was dark again.
>>
I feel bad for all the company drivers in DEF trucks this week...those systems really don't like the cold much.

3 degrees in southern Wisconsin today.

I was in NE and it was in the singles. Drove through IA, for several hours it was between 0 and -2. Now in OH, 13 degrees.

Speaking of Ohio, I got pulled over on the Ohio turnpike. The guy was pretty nice, no violations, but he complained about my windshield cellphone mount. He also asked me if I had any shotguns, which leads me to believe that he that my guitar case was a gun case... which was probably why I got pulled to begin with. He checked my logs and let me go pretty quickly.

pic related is how i feel right about now

So do companies and owner/operators even use cb radios on the road anymore or is that something that got played up in convoy and smokey and the bandit?

Asking because when I was working with a hauler company doing tomatoes (I was the guy who set out markers on where to turn in the dirt roads and direct the drivers on where to drop the empties and which set had been sitting the longest) and I got issued a cell phone with ptt and inacurate phone numbers.

Also what's your record haul that you delivered without getting over weight? Iirc we had one trailer set that made it to the cannery ring in at 126thousand.
>>
>>14219116
I've got my radio on all the time and it's helped out a lot by giving me advance warning of problems ahead. Occasionally you run across good conversations between trucks heading your way, and not long ago a particularly gregarious driver got I65 karaoke night going, but most of the time it's just verbal dreck spewed over the airwaves.

Hello truckers,

Does anyone know if someone can be a seasonally employed pilot car driver? I've tried looking it up with no good results. I was thinking that it would be a cool way to spend the summers.

Pic unrelated.
>>
>>14219437
Ah, was just curious because the only truck that had a cb in it still when I was working for that hauler was the mechanic's field repair rig and an older cabover with a coat hanger being used as an am/fm antennae since they'd pulled all the cb's and replace them with a small mountain of cell phones.

Non trucker here, what's the standard procedure when shit like that happens? Do you take it back to the loaders or do you have to basically park and gaurd it like an angry goose till you can deliver?

If you have to guard it do you get extra hours, or is it a situation where your docked pay for not being on time despite it being entirely the fault of the forklift drivers?

I got it from the dealer I got the Pete from. They said the price was 5k even. But the one sales rep came out and said to the parts guy " you know who this is is right he bought that flat top" she has been trying to get my dad to get the other one they got.(not happening) anyway they rang it up for 4,200$ and gave me a hat.

They are very bi-polar over there. Last time I was there they charged me 55$ to set Jakes to come on 3mph over cruise. And couldn't make any time to give me an inspection 2 months after they sold the truck and their 6 month sticker ran out.

But ya I'm excited. I will be a monkeys uncle if I hit a deer waiting for that fucker

As whenever I had a flat with super singles the rim was no where near the ground as a proper setup has travel limiters on the axle so the rim doesn't drag and you can keep driving.

lol, this was me a few days ago

I don't think hes trying to adjust his tandems... I think his tandem brake shoes are frozen to the drums and his trailer brakes aren't disengaging. Or perhaps his trailer air line is frozen.

I believe he is trying to jostle his tandem wheels free from the brakes, but because he's on ice, the wheels just slide.

I learned some valuable lessons that weren't covered during my OTR training from doing this:

>never set your brakes in freezing conditions, find a level spot to park so you won't roll
>always carry a hammer so you can bang on your brake shoes to get them to disengage when frozen

I set my brakes and passed out. 10 hours later its 5 degrees and I'm stuck, parked on a slab of ice. I poured alcohol into the air line, onto the brake shoes, tried rocking back and forth, banging on my shit with a hammer etc. Six hours later, I was still stuck, even with my locking differentials. Never again, I said.

Got into my 1981 5-spd corolla station wagon after I had been training/otr for 3 months.

I felt like I was hugging the ground
I drove 60mph in the far right lane, all the time on the highway
I never used my center rear view mirror
I was obsessively glancing at my side mirror (only had one back in the early 80s)
I kept a ridiculously long following distance

When I rode with other people, I was honestly frightened by how close they would follow other cars, and how rapid an d careless they were when braking.

It's a 133 truck company, so I am guessing either the training will be one on one and great, or the direct opposite. Probably direct opposite.

So, if somebody picks a bad company that screws with their dac report when it is not legitimately warranted, how bad is this likely to damage the driver's career?
>>
>>14230387
I had 8 weeks of one on one training with Werner after CDL school and that really only scratches the surface of everything you need to know to be cut loose solo.

Unless you're willing to go after companies too small to be arsed with DAC, it can be a career ender.
>>
>>14230392
Hmm. I was really wanting not to be in a truck with a trainer over a month, but I might have a totally different opinion when/if I am horrified and driving such a big vehicle in fucking February alone in Michigan or some shit.

I was really leaning towards them for the contract-free CDL, but this has really made me pause. I've seen some that recommend them and some that say they like to flunk you out of training if you don't catch on quick and/or mess with the DAC.
>>
>>14226667
You mean all you need to change a tire on the road is two tire irons and to be super ripped? Sounds like it's right up most driver's alley.

I went through Gary, so it might be a little different.

Accommodation, lunch and dinner are provided. They pay you $90 for every 8+ hour day and $45 for anything less than that.

You do 7 days of on site training.
Day 1 you do your medical test and a bunch of in processing stuff
Day 2 you do trip planning and backing
Day 3 you do backing and short drives
Day 4 you do backing and short drives
Day 5 you do backing and slightly longer drives
Day 6 you do backing and mostly highway driving
Day 7 you do flatbed securement if you're flatbed and then wait to do a DMV style test.

After that you go out with a trainer for ~2 weeks, when he says you're ready you'll go back to the terminal do another DMV style test and you're in.

At this point you they try to find you a truck and you can start working.

What division did you sign on to?

Very serious, folks will steal a whole trailer and truck if there's a hint of value. Generally the closer you are to a border the higher the risk. A lot of the time I had to check in with an entirely different set of people whose whole job was to watch me as I drove. I even had an escort leaving San Bernardino. Granted he was probably a very hopeful thief who got dissapointed after my 6th hour driving

So basically, you use air pressure to apply your service brakes. That is, you push the brake pedal, air shoots down the brake hose which acts on a diaphragm which pushes a pushrod which moves the slack adjustor which turns the S cam which pushes the shoes and linings against the drum. HOWEVER the park brake works the other way around. When the park brake is applied, there is no air pressure in the park brake circuit and a spring pushes thru the service brake diaphragm and pushes the pushrod in to apply the brakes. When you release the park brake you fill the rear half of the brake chambers with air which pulls the spring back and holds it captive so that it can't apply the brake anymore. there are a few slightly differing versions of this system but that's how the guts of it works.

So basically it needs a certain range of pressure to help keep both valves closed, otherwise a at least one valve opens.

i.e.
Too much psi above range (Braking), the brakes apply, too little psi below range (Park Brake), they apply.

Dunno if this helps others understand a bit more clearly, but here.

So what was the mistake?
>>
>>14240736
I dropped a fucking trailer. I thought everything was kosher - it fucking LOOKED kosher, I couldn't even tug the truck out from underneath the trailer after hooking it. The other drivers are pretty sure my fifth wheel wasn't 100% locked and the sharp U-turn pulled the lock jaw open.
>>
>>14240747
But you tug tested it twice? What do you think happened? What SHOULD you have done?
I just wanna know so it doesn't happen to me in the future
>>
>>14240736
If like he said, checked the locking jaw and pulled twice, the locking jaw must've become undone, pulled out under the trailer without the landing gear down and fell on the chassis
>>
>>14240755
I did the coupling correctly - the only likely mistake on my part is that the locking jaw may not have been 100% in place, but it sure as hell looked like it was. From now on I'll be sure to tug hard enough to damn near scoot the trailer forward, and remember to trailer brake check every time (get up to ~5mph and pull trailer brake lever).
Fuck that scared the shit out of me though.
>>
>>14240747
Maybe you left the parking brake on while tugging and it felt like it was engaged?

>>14240779

Have the stop rod adjustment on your 5th wheel checked. That's a lot of slop. What's the model of your 5th wheel?

>>14240779
>>14240758
Tug testing won't solve anything. You need to learn what the locked distance on your 5th wheel is based on the distance between the inside of the handle and the outside of the top plate. Measure that, and check it along with the visual inspection of the locking jaw, and the stop rod adjustment. Unless the kingpin is worn, all of these measurements being in spec with no ice or debris in the locking jaw will ensure proper engagement of the wedge and jaw.

>>14241018
My recommendations are for Fontaine 5th wheels from ~1975-2012.

I don't think there would be a huge demand. Anything smaller is probably going to be a fleet truck, and they want cheap shit that can get fixed fast. I rarely even see Kenworth straight trucks. Always Internationals or Freightliners. Or Sterling (RIPIP).

There are a handful of companies that run Volvo daycabs. Some have single rear axles.

>>14240706
That sucks. I have seen that happen (or heard) a few times in our yard. Always in the morning when I am half asleep. Wakes me up real quick. They just use 2 forklifts to pick up the front of the trailer.

It's crazy seeing those "Turnpike Doubles". I have been seeing them a little bit lately since I have been way out west and on the toll roads more. Two 53' trailers. Also, I wonder exactly how that Pete crashed into the front of a car. Or if the car hit the truck.

Forgot to share this with u guys
Picked up paper filters and other random paper products from OH a few days ago and the shipper legit couldn't give a rats ass.
I took the pic and sent it to dispatch who forwarded it to receivers and they seemed cool with it so no harm no foul.
Total weight was 4068 lbs. Lol

Ain't my call unfortunately. They will be switching over to dualies on the drives soon at least.
>>
Would any of you drivers enter your truck in the Dakar?
>>
>>14245459
Hmm, so they have to either leave the trailer right at the exit or have another tractor meet up and grab it? Either way, I wouldn't want to make too many turns at stoplights and stuff with two 53' trailers.

I have been seeing them a bit on the Sawgrass Expressway recently, which is another FL toll road like the Turnpike.

Railroader here, just passed my Class A driving and skills tests today. Went to a private school, wasn't too terribly expensive. Most of the time I won't be towing, but I'll occasionally tow a backhoe behind an International WorkStar. Feels good man (minus the International part).

I'm not too worried about it....currently locked out from my job. Union paid for CDL training. I'm just considering this since my kids are older and it's not that big of a deal. The railroads also require some travel, I'd assume. Your job is track maintenance, right?
>>

>>14247324

You may be disappointed.

We're mostly a midwest company, and I know for a fact that our flatbed freight is starving out west right now. They just flew a few guys into Wisconsin to borrow trucks so they could keep working.

You can make it work, but for your benefit I'd recommend finding a company that operates in your area.

>Also, I wonder exactly how that Pete crashed into the front of a car. Or if the car hit the truck.
He hit the back of the car and pushed it into something else. Look where the side view mirror is on the car's door. That's what I meant when I said he was another tailgating Pete driver.
>>
>>14247325
Yessir, track maintenance (MOW). Travel is required, but some people get lucky (or already have a CDL before they hire on) and can hold close to home after they hire out. On average I'd say it takes about 4-5 years of seniority to hold close to home.

On the other hand, you have guys that will spend an entire career on the road, but that is their choice.
>>
>>14248079
I love working with MOW types and curve crews. They give zero fucks and just want to get the trucks the fuck out of there so they can check into their hotel rooms, get trashed, or start their 20 hour drive back home for the weekend.

3300+ miles logged in my 8 day summary

I remember the naysayers all throughout cdl school and otr training saying that you'd be lucky to get 2500 miles a week, realistically, yet my first 2 weeks have each been over 3k

I spoke to a transam driver while doing laundry... he was a nub just like me. Said his otr training lasted 13 days. He said he had been stuck there for a day because he didn't know how to move his tandems back. A dock worker helped him move them to the rear for loading. Also he said he has never scaled a load before and he didn't know how.

As much as I freak out about shit, and as much as I've fucked things up even after my 3+ months of training, I can't BELIEVE a training program could be that short.

Electric buses in Seattle have run on overhead wires since the 1940's. They just bought a new batch that have enough batteries for a couple miles of off-wire maneuvering (although most of the fleet is older buses could only coast or be pushed when off-wire). Most of these buses would otherwise have been powered by Cummins ISL diesels or M11's before that, which is what they run on the non-electric routes.
>>
>>14250768
Why would you ever suggest someone try to make 13cpm?

>>14249357
There are already class 6 hybrids. Electric motors are ideal for starting from a dead stop, but only ultracapacitors have enough juice to do anything within a reasonable weight at this point, so they only push for a few seconds before the ICE has to take over.

Noob can make negative pay by being scammed by a lease to 60k by getting into a good company and working his ass off.
Generic otr company driver can make 50K easy with a little experience. Add 10k-40k for the better companies, private fleets, unions, or special niches. If you're a smart owner op like truckerfag (read: not average) you can make well over $100k.

Then there's various low paying local shit and/or class b stuff that really doesn't pay all that much, like $30-$50k.

Driving a truck for Amazon:
- You get a fleet spec cascadia
- Forward collision mitigation system
- no cruise control
- lane departure warning system
- driver facing cameras, running at all times
- no riders
- cell phones are not allowed in company trucks
- no truck modifications allowed, including (especially) CBs
- radios are removed for your safety
- you are not allowed to have any kind of food in the truck (it's a loss prevention thing, you understand)
- no books (amazon sells books, you know)
- trucks are governed at 55 and you better make those next-day appointments you little shit
- sitting in the cage with other drivers is the most exciting part of the job

Nah, they bought some trailers which led to some people speculating that they plan to buy their own trucks.

The reality is that a company as big as Amazon probably just wants trailers for extended mobile storage purposes and can't be assed to run their own trucks.

If anything they'll contract a dedicated carrier to move the trailers that they own, so you'll see a truck with Amazon in big letters on the door and "operated by wat truking llc" in small letters below it. Amazon has no influence on how wat truking runs their drivers off of Amazon property, so on a dedicated Amazon account you'd still have your ass in a cage at both ends.
>>
>>14256387

This is what Dollar General does. They own the trailers and then companies like US Xpress or Werner will pull the trailers around to the stores.

>>14256283
Hahaha. I think you got the truck spec and cage part right (minus the no radio part), but the rest is a bit of a caricature.

If they would pay like they pay us warehouse plebs, it will be slightly above average with great benefits but little room to move up. Probably a lot of hurry up and wait to satisfy muh customers.

>>14256312
Not yet, but their entire long term business plan is to become an ecommerce monopoly that has complete control of every aspect of their business to "have the best experience for muh customers" The only reason we have good benefits and such is to look like a good liberal company from a distance, because that's what the customers want.

Amazon's already buying out existing trucking companies or setting up their own in foreign countries - france and china both in the news lately. They've just leased a bunch of 767 freighter jets to try and cut-out the express shippers here in the US. It's only a matter of time until they build their own truck fleet or purchase an existing trucking company.

Amazon likes to do things in-house. How much they spend on shipping really bothers them.

Found what appears to be the source of my coolant leak. Lost a gallon overnight. Guy parked next to me said its not that bad...

What do you think? Is it worthy of spending my hours on-duty to put it in the shop? Or will it get better when weather gets warmer?
>>
>>14264614
whats cheaper a gallon of coolant a day or one day in repairs?
>>
>>14264390
The autotragic in the volvo ain't THAT bad. Just set it to 'power' mode when going through hills and it'll do its damn best to maintain speed. My route takes me through 3 major cities per day and just the fact that I no longer have a one leg leg-day is good enough to tolerate the automatic.

Granted, heavier loads etc deff would make use of a manual better but just letting y'all know that there are certain cases where auto becomes preferred over a manual.
>>
>>14264614
I'd snug it up 1/8th turn and if it stops, coat the seam in RTV and see what it does. Might just be a cold leak. Throw it in the shop next time you're home.

>>14264390
All automatics degrade with time. Mine needs all new hoses, valves, servos, and wiring, but $5,000 is a bit steep for the minor nuisances it's causing. If I can get it past 6th gear in the morning without it locking up, I'm good for the rest of the day.

What do you guys think of Melton? They keep calling me and sending me emails so I finally asked to talk to a recruiter
>8 day oriention in Oklahoma (I'm in Cali)
>those 8 days are paid 500 bucks, free hotel, breakfast, lunch
>greyhound ride there is paid
>after orientation you go min 21 days with trainer and get paid 70 bucks per day
>after trainer you get own truck and 41cpm
I heard anything over 40cpm is decent. Does it sound good?
They say they refund up to 1200bucks if you bring them a receipt of the truck school you went to. Also something about loyalty program if you stay with them for like a year you get 2000.

Cons:
>driver cams
Supposedly the recruiter said they don't record 24hrs, only when an event happens. Like accident, swerving, running over something
>winter time for newbie driver
Is getting experience right after school during blizzards, hailstorms, thunderstorms a bad idea?
>work 3 weeks home 3 days
>one week = 24hr day off
Doesn't sound too bad

pls respond
>>
>>14265754
Also you average 2100-2500 miles per week.

Have any of you done company road tests? Do they send you home for every little thing like always starting in 1st gear or being too close to curbs/signs?
>>
>>14265754
Melton has been said to be good. Not sure if true.

41cpm for company newbs is good, so long as they give you enough miles. 2500+ miles/week is what you want.

Driver cams are a good thing in my opinion. I'm glad my company is using them now.

You're gonna be driving in winter conditions. Do you want a trainer with you on your first time doing this? Or do you want to be running solo? I'm learning this wintery shit solo, and I do NOT recommend it. I'm lucky to have not fucked up more than I already have... things are different in the winter. Any other season is probably ezpz123z compared to this shit. They say there are two seasons in trucking: winter and construction.

Im still a newb but I hope this helps
>>
>>14265961
Yeah that winter stuff you said does make sense. Do you feel 21 days OTR is too short? I read your other post where 3+months isn't enough. Do the trainers teach you how to slide your tandems, etc?
>>
>>14265198
Thanks, will do.

Any recommendations on a cb radio? I'd really like to have one but have no idea on how to install it. Do I need a power inverter for it? What about an antenna? I don't need to hear people in china... just a couple miles down the freeway. Also, whats with that stupid echo that everyone has? Is that intentional? It makes it very difficult to understand them. How do I avoid having that with my setup?
>>
>>14265993
People learn at different rates, but I feel that there are many things I'm still learning after my long training. I'm not sure if longer training is the answer though.

Sliding tandems is easy under normal conditions. Truck driving is easy under normal conditions. The problem is that conditions are never normal. Each trailer is different. Some are new, some are old, some are bent, some are broken, some aren't broken in. Some are rusty, some are frozen, some are leaking air... you get the idea. A good trainer will take the time to explain what to do in each situation. But the reality is, you most likely won't experience every situation with your trainer. Just make sure you keep a few tools with you. Hammer, tire pressure gauge, bolt cutters (for those braided steel seals), wd40, pliers, screwdriver, socket set, duct tape... things like that.
>>
>>14264390
I wonder what is so different about big trucks that make automagical transmissions mechanically impracticle?
>>
>>14266350
weight.
>>14266020
what are you driving? as another anon pointed out most of the new trucks have plugs for a cb already installed. you'll just need to find it. freighliners have it behind the sunglasses holder drivers side.
>>
>>14266350
The sheer amount of torque they endure, I'd imagine. A robotic manual would be ideal but I hear Volvo tried that before, and maybe their autos are still exactly that, but that they were finicky as fuck and prone to breaking.
>>
>>14265993
They'll keep you in training as long as you need to be. 21 days is a minimum.

Ask questions. If you're shut down somewhere with a diner, sit at the bar and ask questions. Then ask your trainer about those answers. Training will be what you make of it.

>>14266020
Scratch together $300 and go to a CB shop. Ask for a used peaked and tuned cobra 29 with an Astatic mic installed. The coaxial cable cut from a reel and hand crimped and soldered is more important than the antenna, so if they try to jew you on it, go for the coax over the antenna, since you can swap that out yourself in 10 minutes later.

Echo boards cost about $30 installed and can be turned off with a knob.

30 or so watts barefoot will get you about a 3 mile range with a stock antenna.

Vibration.

Most truck automatics are manual transmissions with automated shifting. The internals are pretty much bulletproof, but the automation is what fucks the driver.

Stock CB power and coaxial is garbage.

I bought pic related... there was red, a blue and a green. Wasn't sure which one but the red said high temp and oil resistant. I bought a shitty socket set too. Are there any good brands of tools at truck stops? Or is it all chinese garbage?

My buddy says he's clearing $1750 a week after taxes at PAM in an O/O's truck. How true can that be?

Also, I'm in Otey Mesa, CA and at the Pilot a mile from the border, how fucked am I?

I live in Springfield IL and I'm a poorfag, are there any companies nearby that offer paid CDL schooling or something like that so I don't have to go into more debt to become a trucker? Or are there programs that can pay for my CDL training? I have no idea where to start looking for this kind of stuff.

WV sure has backroad hills that are a pain in the ass but good lord - the receivers!
Every time I have walked into a shipping office in WV, nothing but qt3.14s working. And they all have features made from Hitler's wet dreams.

Still doesn't make up for its shit geography tho

If you got a grant and don't owe anything, bum off your parents while you get your GED. Then keep looking for a trucking job, but you seriously aren't going to find one, so look for other shit too. Try to get on another construction gig or get an apprenticeship with a tradesman or something.
>>
>>14272967
Short of farm hand work you are boned till 21. You might get lucky with some shady moving companies or if you have any distribution centers in need of a hostler otherwise get really chummy with the dump truck guys and one might let you drive one of his beater trucks
>>

Get another grant to the CC to get your GED.

Once you've got a GED go ahead and get an AA. GED's are worthless by themselves, but an AA/AS shows that you put in some effort towards educating yourself (and really aren't that hard to get), and tend to convince employers that you aren't a complete moron/fuckup (even if you still are). many CC's have combined GED/AA programs.

By the time you get your AA, you'll be 21 and can truck to pay off any loans you may have incurred (shouldn't be too bad, state community colleges are usually pretty cheap).
