How do the air brake pressures work in a truck? All I know is that if you release the brake pipe pressure, the brakes apply, like in a train. What is the full release pressure?

That was my tank pressure. It was dumping air as fast it was compressing it so the pressure wouldn't build. Usually stop with the application needle around 30psi, but it goes as high as pic related. (Middle gauge in the second column from the right)

I was in NE and it was in the singles. Drove through IA, for several hours it was between 0 and -2. Now in OH, 13 degrees.

Speaking of Ohio, I got pulled over on the Ohio turnpike. The guy was pretty nice, no violations, but he complained about my windshield cellphone mount. He also asked me if I had any shotguns, which leads me to believe that he that my guitar case was a gun case... which was probably why I got pulled to begin with. He checked my logs and let me go pretty quickly.

So do companies and owner/operators even use cb radios on the road anymore or is that something that got played up in convoy and smokey and the bandit?

Asking because when I was working with a hauler company doing tomatoes (I was the guy who set out markers on where to turn in the dirt roads and direct the drivers on where to drop the empties and which set had been sitting the longest) and I got issued a cell phone with ptt and inacurate phone numbers.

Also what's your record haul that you delivered without getting over weight? Iirc we had one trailer set that made it to the cannery ring in at 126thousand.

I've got my radio on all the time and it's helped out a lot by giving me advance warning of problems ahead. Occasionally you run across good conversations between trucks heading your way, and not long ago a particularly gregarious driver got I65 karaoke night going, but most of the time it's just verbal dreck spewed over the airwaves.

I don't think hes trying to adjust his tandems... I think his tandem brake shoes are frozen to the drums and his trailer brakes aren't disengaging. Or perhaps his trailer air line is frozen.

I believe he is trying to jostle his tandem wheels free from the brakes, but because he's on ice, the wheels just slide.

I learned some valuable lessons that weren't covered during my OTR training from doing this:

>never set your brakes in freezing conditions, find a level spot to park so you won't roll
>always carry a hammer so you can bang on your brake shoes to get them to disengage when frozen

I set my brakes and passed out. 10 hours later its 5 degrees and I'm stuck, parked on a slab of ice. I poured alcohol into the air line, onto the brake shoes, tried rocking back and forth, banging on my shit with a hammer etc. Six hours later, I was still stuck, even with my locking differentials. Never again, I said.

When I fairy trucks around our little yard, the first day I did this it was almost all 10-18 speeds I was driving around. First time using a tractors clutch, first thought was holy hell it's like moving a cinder block on pavement, second thought was why in gods name do they grab at the fucking top.

Anywho, got back in my 6 speed Camaro and coudln't feel my clutch for a while. Like I couldn't feel the grab point at all, stalled right away on flat ground and had to get use to driving it again.

So, I have an interview with a smaller midsize trucking company Friday. They train new drivers without a CDL from Tennessee for free without a contract. 2 weeks to get the CDL and 3 weeks otr. The company is RE West. I have heard mixed reviews about them, so I dunno.

I've also had it where there are three set of lights right after our yard and even though I leave with all my tires rotating with no issues - I'll have to stop at the lights and when they turn green, tires are seized up again.....at all 3 lights.

I'm about to travel to Roehl Headquarters for my first trucking job. What should I expect in this hiring process?

I went through Gary, so it might be a little different.

Accommodation, lunch and dinner are provided. They pay you $90 for every 8+ hour day and $45 for anything less than that.

You do 7 days of on site training.
Day 1 you do your medical test and a bunch of in processing stuff
Day 2 you do trip planning and backing
Day 3 you do backing and short drives
Day 4 you do backing and short drives
Day 5 you do backing and slightly longer drives
Day 6 you do backing and mostly highway driving
Day 7 you do flatbed securement if you're flatbed and then wait to do a DMV style test.

After that you go out with a trainer for ~2 weeks, when he says you're ready you'll go back to the terminal do another DMV style test and you're in.

At this point you they try to find you a truck and you can start working.

What division did you sign on to?

So basically, you use air pressure to apply your service brakes. That is, you push the brake pedal, air shoots down the brake hose which acts on a diaphragm which pushes a pushrod which moves the slack adjustor which turns the S cam which pushes the shoes and linings against the drum. HOWEVER the park brake works the other way around. When the park brake is applied, there is no air pressure in the park brake circuit and a spring pushes thru the service brake diaphragm and pushes the pushrod in to apply the brakes. When you release the park brake you fill the rear half of the brake chambers with air which pulls the spring back and holds it captive so that it can't apply the brake anymore. there are a few slightly differing versions of this system but that's how the guts of it works.

I think Schneider can me a mediocre okay starter company from what I read, but I'd avoid any dollar store accounts. If they have bulk openings near you, that could be good for experience from what I read. It's hazmat tanker, so I'd keep that in mind as far as risk and complications go.

3300+ miles logged in my 8 day summary

I remember the naysayers all throughout cdl school and otr training saying that you'd be lucky to get 2500 miles a week, realistically, yet my first 2 weeks have each been over 3k

I spoke to a transam driver while doing laundry... he was a nub just like me. Said his otr training lasted 13 days. He said he had been stuck there for a day because he didn't know how to move his tandems back. A dock worker helped him move them to the rear for loading. Also he said he has never scaled a load before and he didn't know how.

As much as I freak out about shit, and as much as I've fucked things up even after my 3+ months of training, I can't BELIEVE a training program could be that short.

Noob can make negative pay by being scammed by a lease to 60k by getting into a good company and working his ass off.
Generic otr company driver can make 50K easy with a little experience. Add 10k-40k for the better companies, private fleets, unions, or special niches. If you're a smart owner op like truckerfag (read: not average) you can make well over $100k.

Then there's various low paying local shit and/or class b stuff that really doesn't pay all that much, like $30-$50k.

The reality is that a company as big as Amazon probably just wants trailers for extended mobile storage purposes and can't be assed to run their own trucks.

If anything they'll contract a dedicated carrier to move the trailers that they own, so you'll see a truck with Amazon in big letters on the door and "operated by wat truking llc" in small letters below it. Amazon has no influence on how wat truking runs their drivers off of Amazon property, so on a dedicated Amazon account you'd still have your ass in a cage at both ends.

The autotragic in the volvo ain't THAT bad. Just set it to 'power' mode when going through hills and it'll do its damn best to maintain speed. My route takes me through 3 major cities per day and just the fact that I no longer have a one leg leg-day is good enough to tolerate the automatic.

Granted, heavier loads etc deff would make use of a manual better but just letting y'all know that there are certain cases where auto becomes preferred over a manual.

All automatics degrade with time. Mine needs all new hoses, valves, servos, and wiring, but $5,000 is a bit steep for the minor nuisances it's causing. If I can get it past 6th gear in the morning without it locking up, I'm good for the rest of the day.

What do you guys think of Melton? They keep calling me and sending me emails so I finally asked to talk to a recruiter

41cpm for company newbs is good, so long as they give you enough miles. 2500+ miles/week is what you want.

Driver cams are a good thing in my opinion. I'm glad my company is using them now.

You're gonna be driving in winter conditions. Do you want a trainer with you on your first time doing this? Or do you want to be running solo? I'm learning this wintery shit solo, and I do NOT recommend it. I'm lucky to have not fucked up more than I already have... things are different in the winter. Any other season is probably ezpz123z compared to this shit. They say there are two seasons in trucking: winter and construction.

People learn at different rates, but I feel that there are many things I'm still learning after my long training. I'm not sure if longer training is the answer though.

Sliding tandems is easy under normal conditions. Truck driving is easy under normal conditions. The problem is that conditions are never normal. Each trailer is different. Some are new, some are old, some are bent, some are broken, some aren't broken in. Some are rusty, some are frozen, some are leaking air... you get the idea. A good trainer will take the time to explain what to do in each situation. But the reality is, you most likely won't experience every situation with your trainer. Just make sure you keep a few tools with you. Hammer, tire pressure gauge, bolt cutters (for those braided steel seals), wd40, pliers, screwdriver, socket set, duct tape... things like that.

Ask questions. If you're shut down somewhere with a diner, sit at the bar and ask questions. Then ask your trainer about those answers. Training will be what you make of it.

Scratch together $300 and go to a CB shop. Ask for a used peaked and tuned cobra 29 with an Astatic mic installed. The coaxial cable cut from a reel and hand crimped and soldered is more important than the antenna, so if they try to jew you on it, go for the coax over the antenna, since you can swap that out yourself in 10 minutes later.

Echo boards cost about $30 installed and can be turned off with a knob.
