Cabin:
2 Door Single?
2 Door Extended?
4 Door with small rear?
4 Door full size doors?

Short Bed?
Long Bed?

2WD/4WD

Auto/Manual

Some reason the internet thinks Regular cab/ Long Bed is the best truck, manual with 4wd. That shit is rare as fuck, and ANYTHING manual + 4x4 costs a SHIT TON.

I have a Regular Cab work truck ('02 Sierra), and it just sucks. Really. I wish it had at least 1' behind the seat for expensive tools or things in general. It would help so much. The side cargo bins are full of HVAC stuff. The bed is for big parts/ materials, the roof is for ladders. It's definitely not a long bed, but it's a good size.

I'm thinking about getting rid of my jalopy SUV and getting a 4 door pickup with a short bed. Some reason this setup is like, heresy on car forums. Just cause something has more doors doesn't mean it's a family hauler. And even those little 4' beds on the S10 and Toyota pickups were great, you just leave the tailgate down, and strap up whatever hangs off. Not that the Ridgeline or Explorer SportTrac were good, but it's plenty of truck.

Maybe on /o/, in real life hardly anyone would want that which is why hardly any were/are made

>Best daily driver
Regular cab short bed 4x4 manual or auto is fine as long as the trans is stout

>Best for hauling
Crew cab long bed 4x4 same trans requirements

OP I bought a manual 4x4 V10 Ram 2500 regular cab long bed for $1900. The clutch was out and the front of the frame had some rust but I was using it as a parts truck so I didn't care about that. Funny thing is when I posted about my project on the Dodge forum a few guys didn't think they made the 2500s in reg cab long bed kek so they are rare. Pic related

Super Cab/King Cab. Short bed, 4x4 manual.

Lets you haul more shit out of the weather if need be, and lets you put a better sound system in if wanted, and you can hoon on the gravel roads with the manual and 4x4, and the manual will let you haul heavier loads with less power.

90% of the v10's on my craigslist are that combination, my friend even owns one just like that

If im going to have a regular cab it better be a diesel 4x4, or a V8 gas 2wd
if im going to have a crew cab it better be diesel and 4x4
and if you own an extended cab you should kill yourself because theyre all ugly

Personally: biggest cab option and biggest bed, 4wd, automagic. Pickups are for pulling big things in a straight line. Might as well pull the most things with the most comfort possible, with the most friends (or mexican laborers) possible.

If I were running a fleet and wanted the least cents per mile I'd buy a cabover flatbed or a minivan not some styleside garbage.

I don't think they did diesels in regular cab short bed but you could swap one in with a bit of effort.

>>14207487
Yeah the parts truck was from Texas and the body was clean but the front bit of the frame had cancer rust. Not sure how to be quite honest.

ive never seen one but i really want to start with a clean v10 shortbed, regularcab body which will be hard to find and swap a 24v valve in it
im a diesel mechanic so i have to mess with the motor so i may as well start with it out of the truck
>>
>>14207547

you couldnt get one bud, your best bet if you want a reg cab short bed diesel is buying a reg cab long bed diesel and cutting 2 feet out of the frame

yeah if you want to do a RCSB diesel you are best to start with a 3/4 ton frame and running gear anyways, that much torque on a 1/2 ton frame is going to be too much

I think RCSB was only available in 1500s. Your best bet will be to do essentially what I did. Start with a 1500 truck, probably V6 auto whatever you can find cheapest with a straight body and frame, then buy any diesel 4x4 truck. Pull the engine, trans, wiring, driveshafts, and axles out of the diesel truck and swap them into the 1500. Gain back some profit by selling the drivetrain from the recipient truck and scrapping the parts shell.

You can put the diesel engine and trans in the 1500 with the 1500 axles but I woudn't trust them to stand up to even stock Cummins torque.

theres threads of people doing this and completely destroying their trucks, but they were towing heavy stuff which is stupid

either 2 door single or 4 door with half door on the rear

short bed in either case, 4wd

I don't understand why crew cabs are so popular, its turning your truck into a minivan, particularly with the extra short beds in some trucks that can't even fit a whole sheet of plywood etc

The stock 1500 axles will survive minimal abuse, but it's cheaper to just buy a parts truck. And if you have it you might as well swap in the beefy axles.

Depends heavily on the application.

For a DD?

Fuck regular cabs, extended cabs with no doors, and extended cabs with one/two suicide doors.

Suicide doors are a pain in the ass in parking lots. To access the rear passenger compartment you pretty much have to have noone parking next to you. I've had to throw shit through the rear window to get it in the backseat before. I mean, on a midsize truck they might not be that bad, but a fullsize truck is wide as fuck. And the extended cabs with no doors? After a while, the seat won't want to slide up to let you in the back and you have to crawl over seats. I mean, extended cabs are nice, because you can throw your rifle on the backseat, rather than bouncing around behind the seat of a regular cab.

The only use I see for a regular cab is for off road use with tight trails. But if I'm mud riding, I would want a stereo with subs underneath the rear seat. There's also the size problem. Regular cabs are made for short people. No room to back the seat up.

Double cabs (extended cabs with normal opening doors) are a better idea than extended cabs, but most people who buy double cabs wish they got a crew cab. Another thing about double cabs and extended cabs, the rear passengers have to be short.

There's a reason crew cabs are the number one seller.

Tl;dr

DD for a family with older kids: Crew cab
DD for a family with younger kids: Double cab
Off road toy: Extended cab
SWB: Regular cab
