I paid a dude 800 cash for a manual transmission 1995 Geo Metro hatchback and didn't even know how to drive it. I stalled 8 or 9 times on the way home (it was only a few miles) and got my first ticket at 17 years old for expired tags, no insurance, and reckless driving.

Then I proceeded to spend $350 each month on insurance. I ended up not even driving my senior year because I couldn't afford insurance + my parents charging me rent.

I can't really say one way or the other for the quality of the vehicles, especially as ranger varied so much over the years...but, I would probably throw my vote at the ranger, purely because the sheer amount of fleet sales makes getting parts borderline free. They both seem fairly dependable otherwise.

Chevy S-10's and their GMC equivalent are just as fine, though not quite as good looking as Rangers (I think). Old Mazda B series trucks are great as well, easier to fix but they are a bit harder to find parts for. I had a b2600i, I was able to squeeze out 30-35 mpg on the highway by being really careful. Those 4cyl engines are yummy.

I wouldn't go for the Tacoma or Frontier, they are also newer.

For all intensive purposes, mid-90's S10 chevy and Ford Rangers are pretty much the same offering and potential, and have the safety features and reliability you want so you might as well look for either or.

There is some praise to be had about the old 'yota trucks as well like the Hilux, but they are scarce.

Just talk to the kid, there are lots of options available in that market. Manual can be fun (and a little truck is easy to learn on), King Cab can be useful. I wouldn't go for a four door anything.

If you can find one, Jeep Comanche pickups are also cool. Nothing wrong with them and despite their slight scarcity in this world, there are plenty of parts because it is essentially the same platform as the Cherokee.
