Find some random asshole on the street, give him your wallet, set fire to your clothes and then catch the bus while telling everyone on the bus you own a Porsche.

That's what having a 944 as your first car is like.
>>
How do you think an extremely old exotic will be for a first car?
>>
>>14183529
Good assuming the previous owner has fixed absolute everything in the car and replaced absolute everything with more reliable parts. In any other situation it's one of the worst cars to start out with unless you have shitloads of money, place and interest in wrenching your car instead of being able to drive it..
>>
They're the most common rwd car being posted on Craigslist for $1,500 or less in my area.

That's not a good thing.
>>
stop going to websites like car throttle
>>
>>14183529
Buy a running one for braps and a non-running one for parts.
Could probably do that for less than $5000

Lots of better cheap RWD platforms out there.
>>
>>14183529
I owned one of these years ago. though it was a turbo. here's the jist
>super good interior quality if it was decently cared for
>handles good FOR IT'S DAY, but average for today
>parts are expensive and some are getting hard to find
>the turbo is a maintenance monster
>the front bumper looks like shit on the NA
>labor hours are sort of high for average repairs
>it's OLD which means bushings, lines, tubes, gaskets will all need replacing unless owner has PROOF he already did it
>if that rear glass breaks LOLOLOLOLOL GL.
the 944 S2 was the best of both worlds. Way more reliable than the turbo but about the same stock times. faster and better looking than the NA

Saving up to buy one of these hopefully in a few years. Gonna try and buy one through a forum or through PCA instead of Craigslist, not going to cheap out on it either. Weird thing is that from what I've read, it's never consistent. Either it craps out in all regards or you change the timing belt and pump every few years and it never breaks down.
>>
>>14186878
Wouldnt it be better to have a 911 instead of a 944?
>>
>>14186911
Yeah, that's the obvious choice. Shooped this during a Steam Chat with one of my friends talking about the 944.
>>

>>
>>14183529
Not joking i have a 944 for a first car.

It's been treating me well so far. the previous owner gutted it and installed race seats and a 4-point after he took it to autocross. not too uncomfortable and as a daily driver it's alright. only complaint is that since it's a Porsche, replacement parts have been expensive and hard to find. may post pics later
>>
>>14187163
Do you have a list of things you are planning to change in the near future?

How is the suspension?
>>
>>14183529
Durable and fun. Easy to work on, too.

But relatively unreliable and you're gonna get assraped on the price of parts.
>>
>>14186858
Nope
>>
>>14187183
have to redo the timing chain. only major repair i need to do. Everything else i did on the car were silly little things that arose from the car being gutted. the suspension is a little stiff but not too bad, i live in eastern PA with windy but shit roads and it's great.

>>14187215
BTW i paid 2,300 for the car in all. after towing it over to my state and registering it and doing little repairs i'm in it for about 3,000

my 944 was my first car. Insurance is cheap because it's a classic, but they fairly unreliable, and repairs are expensive. If you can borrow a parent's car as a daily then it would be fine, but I wouldn't daily it as a first car.

Me again. Though it isn't very reliable, It is still an absolutely excellent car, and my 944 is the best car iv'e ever owned, despite its downfalls.
>>
Do you have the time and energy to properly maintain your car and do basic repairs? Do you have enough savings to drop a coupe hundred on a part here and there? They're fun cars, and while I don't think I you should let /o/ demoralize you (it bothers me how this board thinks working on a car is a bad thing, as much as it bothers me to see how fucking lazy my generation of enthusiasts is) you should also know that it'll take work to keep it running, you'll need to treat it well for it to be reliable.

So what's the NA like compared to the Turbo? Seeing as the average turbo I see is three or four times the price of the average NA, is it really worth the difference? The low price of the 944 kind of mellows out with maintenance costs, but that seems moot when it's so expensive.
>>
>>14193202
I think someone here said they're 5k cars, which means that if you buy a cheap one you'll spend the difference fixing it right away.
There's really no such thing as a cheap Porsche.
>>
>>14193288
>The low price of the 944 kind of mellows out with maintenance costs

Yeah, I'm saying theoretically, buy an NA for $4000 and spend $2000 fixing it up, but most Turbos I've come across are like 12k minimum, so unless they're somehow more reliable, is what comes to probably a difference of $9000 between the car itself and more extensive turbo maintenance really worth it?
>>
>>14193467
Pretty sure the turbo just has the advantage of being significantly faster than the NA, and of course rarity.

Better in performance but worse in every other practical regard. Fewer were produced so parts are rarer, and therefor more expensive, and the cars themselves are more expensive because they are faster, but again, mostly because they are rarer. You're better off buying a normal one and modifying or outright swapping the engine if you want better performance out of it.

I might be coming into enough money soon to get myself a 964.

What's /o/'s opinion?

Are they reliable? Daily driveable? How fucked am I if something goes wrong?

>Buy a 944 with a good body and a blown motor or something else horrendously wrong with it on the cheap
>buy a similar year VW Sciorocco with good underpinnings but maybe a trashed body or an autotrans on the cheap
>engine swap and stuff

I really don't know why more people don't do this. The Sciorocco is mechanically the SAME car.

The secret is out 944fags

>Not swapping the engine and bell housing for an LS kit for added reliability and power

If you're going to swap the engine for reliability's sake, why not swap it for something more powerful with cheaper parts and greater community support?

Yup, far more than the 944 for the matter.

>How fucked am I if something goes wrong?
I'm betting most pre-996 parts used in previous 911 models are compatible, so I'm guessing you're probably golden. Not completely sure though, might be better to wait for the reply of someone who actually owned or worked around one.
>>
>>14183529
You're better off buying an early high mileage 986 Boxster
>>
>>14193935
The 964 is more expensive than a well sorted 996 or 997.1

I second this, a 986 boxster is similarly priced to a 944.

>>
>>14187200
hell an E30 would be a better option.
>>
>>14201663
in what sense?
>>
>>14201681
Actually more reliable and easier to get more power out of, and bigger aftermarket so it probably could be made to handle better.
>>
>>14201696
fair enough. the 944 has some parts interchangeability with the 924/928/968 as well as vws and audis, to get decent power out of an NA you need to swap engines which is easier than it would be in a lot of cases, the transaxle layout makes handling possible in a different league to the e30.
the aftermarket and amount of research done into the modifying of e30s is a massive advantage though.
as for reliability both cars suffer from old age more than anything and i'd say they're similar although the e30 is easier to work on and has cheaper parts which matters more because shit will break frequently on either car now.
>>
>>14201749
No doubt both being unmodified the 944 would pummel the E30, I wasn't arguing that, but its just that time has not been kind to the 944, whereas E30 has only gained from a richer aftermarket and larger fanbase.
>>
>>14201783
i don't know it's hard to find good examples of either now.
like for like e30s are cheaper though (316is etc).
80% of examples of either car are shit imo.
but a few 944s are seriously well kept garage dwellers with owners really devoted to the cars despite the relative low value.
i don't see that in e30s unless it's an m or something.
they also seem to rust less than e30s which is a big deal to me.

stop asking people who have never owned a porsche about a classic niche porsche. you wont get any accurate info here. ive built numerous porsches, including a 944, head over to rennlist and ask there. you will only get inaccurate info here.
>>
>>14195029
you should learn to read. the ls1 weighs like 15 more pounds than the na 944. it does nothing to the weight distribution.
