A lower number is thinner, higher is thicker. The w stands for winter. So for example 5w20 is a 5 weight oil in the cold and 20 in the hot. Depending on the temperature range you'll be driving the car in, you'll want a different multiweight oil. It gets down to about 32F and up to 110F where I live, so I use 5w40 in the winter and 10w40 in summer.

I always use 0W no matter what engine and what time of year. Cold oil is always never going to be too thin, so you want it as thin as possible when cold. the second number is the weight of oil at operating temperature, so 0W-30 and regular old 30 weight (30W-30) oil will (theoretically) behave exactly the same way when your car is warmed up.
