>Subaru BRZ

I don't get it, its almost the exact same car. I don't know much about manufactures but what brought this on? Are there other examples of this?

It just doesn't make sense, three manufactures, one almost identical car.

BRZ has a less aggressive look and more luxurious interior.
FRS is more basic, aggressive, and has a more track-adjusted suspension.
GT86 is for Asian markets.
>>
Chevy City Express/Nissan NV200

Its the same van, nothing different. They just popped different badges on the front and on the steering wheel.
>>
>>14166940

Cool but how does something like this happen? I've seen it happen before with the rav4 and vitara but with three brands? It just seems so nonsensical why go through with it?
>>
>>14166998

It's not hard bro.. Toyota sells it as a scion for American youth, rest of world youth doesn't have scion so Toyota sells under itself.

Subaru actually made them all but in allot less numbers as what Toyo wanted. I feel subie didn't want to do it anyway but it still happened.

I actually hate the 86 front and head lights.
>>
Well to start off with, Scion is simply a branch of Toyota, so the GT86 is really only two companies collaborating on a single vehicle, which is not unheard of at all. In this case Subaru designed the engine while Toyota designed the chassis, I believe. Not sure about anything more specific than that.

But for other examples you can look at DSM, which was a partnership between Chrysler and Mitsubishi and resulted in several sister cars such as the Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon and Mitsubishi 3000GT/Dodge Stealth. Additionally, Ford has often worked with Mazda, resulting in very similar cars like the Mazda 323/Ford Escort.
>>
>>14166998
There are different reason. Sharing the R&D costs makes cars more profitable for the manufacturers. Also, some brands might sell better in areas than other brands do. Or maybe one manufacturer doesnt have plans to R&D a vehicle to answer other new vehicles so they might make a deal to just purchase and rebadge another companies vehicle just to get a market share.

The frs/brz for example. The scion brand is more youth oriented, suburu probably wouldnt sell very well outside of europe and north america and as for the toyota version, they probably didnt want to fuck with their image oversees or maybe since everyone thinks toyota is super reliable they wouldnt buy any of the either two.
>>
Plus subaru did it with Saab for the saabaru

Saab exterior front with Impreza interior and rear'ish. It was like the fiat and Miata roadster. Fiat outside Mazda inside.
>>
>>14166923

Almost the same car maybe, but they have different setups which becomes apparent if you've driven both.

The GT-86 and FR-S ride more smoothly with higher dampening and lower spring rates. They're driftier. The BRZ has less dampening and higher spring rates, rides much more rugged and capable over rough terrain as a Subaru normally does.
>>
>>14167086

Say Toyota in the us first thing people think is old Toyo pick up truck. Or boring. Where scion came from, which has totally gone downhill lately.
>>
>>14166923
and

>three manufactures

all 86's are built at the same plant.
>>
>>14167050
>I actually hate the 86 front and head lights.
And God hates you.

OP it was just a business deal. Sports cars don't sell as well as they did in the 90s and early 00s so they wanted to hedge their bets a bit. Toyota got the way better end of the deal. Scion literally IS Toyota.
>>
in what way is this hard to understand

It's a marketing thing.

Slap a GMC badge on a silverado and you now have a "classy" truck that appeals to yuppies that wants the utility of a truck without looking like an inbred chevy driving redneck.

Scared your new sports car won't sell well in the states? Call it a Datsun 240z and save the Nissan brand some face.

When it comes to the FRS/BRZ/GT86 just look at who makes it. Subaru can pull it off in the U.S. because the WRX gives them a reputation for sporty cars. Toyota on the other hand has nothing sporting in their line up. They're more known for reliable econoboxes in the U.S. which would make people see the GT86 as more of a shitty economy car than a sporty coupe. That's why they sell it under the Scion banner which is newer and has less of a stereotype with it.

Honestly both did bad as far as front design.

My brz is black so the face isn't as noticeable but any other color looks eh.

Frs front looks better in person but if they would have out brz headlights on frs I think it would have helped.
>>
The GT86 and the FRS are the same exact car. The BRZ has a few different bumpers and interior bits. And the brand difference is because it is a Subaru engine, and Toyota everything else. The FRS is for America and Canada, while the GT86 is for Europe and Austraila.
>>
Subaru builds the AS1(triplets) in Gunma, derived from a modified Impreza chassis. There's STI hardware in there.
Toyota designed the body, supplies the 6AT (derived from the ISF autobox), and shared their D4-S direct injection.
Aisin supplies the 6MT
It's a Subaru regardless of how one paints it.
>>
I'm actually in the middle of deciding which way to go right now. I test drove both, and the BRZ definitely feels slightly better on bumpy ass roads and is quieter, what with a padded trunk. It also just feels a little more mature.

The only question I have is how do headlights compare? BRZ uses halogen I think while FRS uses something else? It's odd but I do a decent bit of night commuting so it's a plus to know I got the better lights as well.

The 86 is the base model, pretty much like the FRS except with 16" wheels

Toyota wanted to revive the 86 but their engineering department doesn't know shit but ecoboxes anymore so they brought subaru into the boat. Contracts were signed and the joint venture started. Both companies are allowed to sell the car and do so but with slightly different optic. The FRS is just a poorspec GT86 so american teenagers can afford one.

Wrong. The 86 and GT86 are the exact same. They call it the 86 in Asia because muh tofu heritage and the GT86 in Europe because tofu heritage is unknown in Europe and just calling it the 86 wouldn't be enough to indicate that it's a sports car.

Wat. tires by far are better.
CF driveshafts are only really useful for drag racing and they still do nothing for power output, they just help with putting power down due to their flex (And they are alot stronger for high-hp applications)

Though going back up the comments anon was on about weight not power. id disagree though, lexan windows would shave ALOT of weight, so would a one-piece CF front end.

A one piece CF/Fiberglass front end would probably also give you a shitload better weight distribution to boot.

A CF/Fiberglass rear hatch with lexan window would also save alot of money. Alot of guys with coupes do that pretty early on.

Toyota owns a controlling share in Subaru. Since Toyota is scared of any sort of sportyness now, but they wanted a cheap sports car to appeal to the youth again, they payed off Subaru to make a sports car for them, the agreement being it would be jointly badged. So Toyota paid for most of the development costs, but Subaru did the heavy lifting, which is why it uses a Subaru Boxer engine and a modified Impreza chassis, it's a bit like the Miata and the Fiat 200, though a bit more direct. This likely foreshadows the death of the affordable sports car; Since this took two fucking manufacturers to make, if they don't sell like hotcakes, it won't be worth it for manufacturers to develop cheap coupes in the future, which is why Nissan copped out of the IDx and may cancel the Z line in the future.
