Okay from what I'm reading, it seems like it's not so much booby traps, but more like locals throwing rocks at racers, holding them at gunpoint for ransom or money, and stealing from them or trying to guide them down the wrong path with the intention of mugging the racers.

I think that was probably the original incarnation in Europe and Africa. You must understand that there were many groups of the locals that hated the Dakar. They didn't bring revenue to the towns and quite often people were killed from racers going the wrong way and shit like that.

I would highly doubt that happens in Argentina and Chile.

In 2009 they switched to South America since the 2008 race was cancelled due to terrorist threats. Racing in the Dakar is one of my dreams.
