Ive always liked the Supra and the 2jz motor that came in it and have always wanted one. BUT, since Supra's are out of my price range and are slowly growing in price, I figured the next best step would be to get a different model car with the 2jz in it.

IS300
or
SC300

In /o/'s opinion which is the better car between the 2?

This is gonan be a project car and most of the money is going into the engine and suspension. I'm not really worried as to what looks like. Just something that will rip up the road.

Its 300lbs lighter. Weight-to-power ratio of 15.21 (IS300) to 15.53 (SC300). So, Stock for Stock, I would put my money on the IS300.

In a sense the 2jz is the worst thing about the Supra, it ruins the handling.
Better to get a cheap Supra and drop a 1uz in it.

IS300 if you're in it for performance.

The SC is a grand touring car, not a sports car. It's great on the highway, but it's heavy and awkward in corners.

IS300 has great handling stock and can be improved from there. Also weighs less despite having two more doors.

It's rare to find a manual in either.

I chose the IS/Altezza, the more I drive it the more I like it.

People often make that mistake for some reason and is simply not true. If it was, most of the parts would simply bolt over between the two. However that is not the case. The Supra and SC/Soarer are different chassis. The Supra is an A platform and the SC/Soarer is a Z platform.

The block, rods, and crank are identical between the two. It's arguable that the GE engines are just as strong as the GTE. Plenty of NA-T conversions out there.

You can boost the na, it's a common thing to do and you can buy literally everything for it off the shelf anyway.

On the non-vvti engines the only real diffrence are the pistons and head (has different ports and bolt pattens for the manifolds)
oil return blocked off and no oil quirters iirc (which can be taken care of)

VVTi has weaker conecting rods in addition

Cousin of mine had an na-t GS300 making 420whp. It's not an impossible thing to do.

The IS has better amenities than the SC which barely changed since it hit the streets for MY1992. The IS looks nicer and objectively it's the better car.

The only reason to pick the SC is because it looks sportier.

Pistons are different
VVTi has weaker rods, IS even more so.

Yes they are.

Besides the turboes and associated plumbing, the only mechanical difference between a pre-VVT-i GE and GTE are:

- the head design
- the lower CR pistons
- the oil squirters

VVT-i GE motors got thinner and weaker rods.

I'm not familiar enough to say how common the A70 is with the Z30, but that's because I've never heard of someone bolting up A70 parts to a Z30 or vice-versa. I have heard that there are some parts are interchangeable to with A80, though.
