WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING? These prices can't last, can they? I know people who are buying huge gas inefficient SUVs to drive themselves crazy distances to work because "gas is cheap now".

A lot of things are happening. Gas prices are just one of many indicators.

some gas stations are over-pricing 93 +0.80 from regular, which sucks.
>>
>>14133356
In my area, regular is $2.43 and supreme (93 AKI) is $3.05, a difference of 62 cents. It sucks that the price gap between grades of gas is still so wide. It used to only be ten or fifteen cents between each grade.

Plenti as a rewards program is the biggest waste of time though. One cent for every gallon of gas you pump? It's not even worth the time or effort to carry or swipe the loyalty card.

>WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING?
Arabs are trying to price US/Canada out of the market.
Meanwhile, everyone who hates Russia tries to kill their economy by dumping oil on the market.
>>
>>14133432
How long is that sustainable? If oil prices rise, then the US wells will start production as the oil prices rise above the break-even threshold again. Iran sanctions are ending and they're going to increase the oil supply (currently 2 million barrels production more than demand) by 25% further putting downard pressure on prices.

Everyone is making more and is still suffering. Oil company stocks are dropping and saudi arabia is raising taxes while slashing the budget because oil prices don't support their spending anymore.

>How long is that sustainable?
Arabs have used their oil money to buy 6x6 SUVs and ice hockey arenas in the desert. Now they can afford a little less of that, but it was never sustainable.
The US spends a massive amount of resources in this price battle, but as long as oil is traded in $, they can afford to do that. If the US economy goes under, the entire world economy follows, then gas prices are the least of your worries.

Gas taxes are insane. They tax a 3,000 lb sedan at the same rate a 20,000lb+ trailer that puts far more wear and tear on the road. It punishes consumers. Raising the gas tax now would be a mistake.

At least when I was in Boise a few weeks back, the gas station near the airport printed that 48 cents of each gallon went to taxes.

What the hell is happening in California?
>>
>>14134621
http://time.com/money/3957143/gas-prices-increase-california/
>California gas is subject to especially high local taxes and fees (which add on about 70¢ per gallon), and state rules require that only special low-pollution blends of fuel are used. As a result, California gas stations can only get fuel from a select few refineries. And when demand increases quickly or there are production issues that slow the local supply, California gas prices—which are high compared to the rest of the country to begin with—hit the roof
tl;dr the state taxes it to hell and requires a very special more expensive fuel blend

We have been. Until just last week, Congress banned the exportation of US oil. We can export it now with that new fucking omnibus budget. The rub though, in order to lift the ban, republicans had to allow democrats to spend 3 billion dollars on "green energy". So that's 3 billion in the garbage for tax payers.

I hope these prices don't last. Oil is one of the main bread and butter shipments for the railroad that I work for. We are suffering big time with crude prices being as low as they are. As of last month there were 3,500 TY&E employees laid off and that number was rising. I have friends who were working up north in the oil fields too and they have lost their jobs already. Sucks for everyone else but I'd rather be paying $4/gallon and know I've got a job waiting for me tomorrow.

I'm not starving because my expertise is related to a piece of software not specific to the oil industry. I'm just going to other companies instead.
