I bought a 2014 Honda Accord 2 years ago and every winter my average MPG dips down to 14-18. I live in North Dakota, where it is cold as shit (-20F some days) but this shouldn't hurt my average that bad, should it? I seem to get 20-26 in the summer time. Anyone else have similar problems?
>>
>I bought a 2014 Honda Accord 2 years ago
Why?
>>
>>14131974
maybe you scraped on snow and fucked up your fuel line. Get it checked
>>
>>14131974
>this shouldn't hurt my average that bad, should it?
In the winter, your engine takes waaaay longer to warm up to normal operating temperatures where it's most efficient, so yes, the winter will hurt your economy by a lot, especially if you drive hard while the engine's not warm. You might try buying a block heater to warm up the engine electronically before you go somewhere. Of course you should look into whether or not it can be done on your car and if it's worth the cost.
>>
>>14132057
>electronically
I meant electrically.
>>
>>14132057
This. Also your winter tires may decrease economy. I've had tires lower my economy by up to 4 mpg.
>>
If your like the average north dakotan and leave your car running while getting groceries that might be why.
>>
>>14132171
That reminds me, if you let your car sit and idle for a while to warm up before you go somewhere, that's worse than just starting the car and driving gently until the engine warms up. When you idle, you are getting 0mpg, but when you drive gently, you are getting greater than 0mpg while warming the engine up faster.
>>
>>14132192
and if you drive on a cold engine you increase the chance of blowing a head gasket.

gtfo enviro-mentalist.
>>
>>14131974
My car does this. When it dips below 40F my mpgs drop badly. I think the tuning on some cars cant handle cold air.
>>
>>14132192
From a MPG standpoint it's bad but from an engine health standpoint you want a warm engine. We are talking about below zero temperature here.

and driving it easy while it's warming is not going to kill a head gasket. But your transmission won't appreciate you letting the engine warm up while it just gets residual heat and then you hop in and say "oh it's warmed up!" and proceed to hoon it.

>mfw I knew someone who did that
>>
>>14132192
Are you stupid? Who is concerned about fuel economy when the car is not moving on purpose?
>>
>>14132229
>>14132251
Exaggeration much? Driving it gently is not going to hurt it. Flooring it on a cold engine will definitely break something after a while.

>>14132264
The OP asked about his fuel economy in the winter and I gave him suggestions for improving it. Did you not read the thread at all?

Don't forget winter gas lowers mpg

I agree but that's v8 MPG numbers. In fact I'd be mad about 20-26 mpg

This is the 8,000th time I've had to post this; WHEN YOU LET IT WARM UP STATIONARY YOU'RE DRASTICALLY INCREASING THE TIME THE ENGINE STAYS COLD AND THEREFORE CAUSE A SHITLOAD MORE WEAR TO IT. Every fucking manual says to drive the car lightly, not idle it.
>>
My Z pisses in your Accords intake, fuck off queer.
Go ahead and benchrace. I've owned more vehicles than you've seen years, and I was thoroughly underwhelmed by the Accord. The interior is 90s KIA tier too.

They are what got me interested in sports coupes again, but they are a letdown in reality. And I am a Honda fanboi. The 370z blew the Accord away in the feels dept, that's why I bought one instead.

The 370z has Jap class with muscle acceleration, and the handling characteristics you'd expect from a traditional two seat rwd coupe making 330+hp at the crank.

You fell for the meme, while people who actually like cars and driving chose any number of quicker sharp handling cars in the price range.

Idling has done nothing to my car and modern cars automatically raise the revs to warm the car up faster at idle. There's no benefit driving a cold car around.

Okay go read your manual because I'm not going to sit here while you stick fingers in your ears and yell about how you're right
>>
op here, I just don't understand why my MPG drops so drastically. It's rated at 26 city/ 34 highway.

V6 engine in your Accord? Should be normal. You got 3 things working against you:
>1.) Shits cold, 0F
>2.) 10% Ethanol blend at the pumps, this decreases mileage.
>3.) Current refined gas has more butane in it for winter blends.

Heavy car, cold temps, cheap ethanol, butane blends='meh' MPG
>>
>>14132433
MPG ratings are an average. They arent what you will get.
>>
>>14132433
Your driving habits dictates fuel economy mostly. Second would be stuff like the air filter, fuel filter, tire pressure. Third would be problems with your car like you might have hit something, bad sensors making the car run rich. I'd expect a slight drop as winter blend gas is less fuel efficient and the extra idle time warming up your car.

BTW, what octane gas are you using?
>>
>>14132445
I bought the car brand new though, so I don't understand how anything could be wrong, I've never been in an accident.

I use above 90 octane, never anything below.
>>
>>14132441
He can get pure gas in North Dakota. Or 100LL if he didn't get such a shit car.
>>
>>14131974
your driving habits have probably changed also as the engine isn't up to temp it's trying to heat itself up. maybe block off your grille
>>
>>14132459
Only use the octane your manual recommends. The whole "regular, plus, premium" thing is a marketing ploy. Using an octane higher than your car is built for will result in less MPG. It's more resistant to burning which allows higher compression in performance cars.
>>
>>14132472
You do know that modern engines (not the econo-boxes) can take advantage of different octanes, right. The higher octane equals less power isnt true anymore.

Uh, no it won't. The only problem is using fuel with too low an octane rating, which will cause engine knocking. Using too high an octane will certainly not decrease your economy, but it will cost you more money.

>>14132507
They never did. Once the spark plug fires, then it doesn't matter what the octane rating/anti-knock index is, the fuel is igniting anyways.
>>
>>14132459
ur car calls for regular dipshit

My ranger would get 26-28 in the summer and dip down into 22-24 in winter. It never got below 0 degrees here.
>>
>>14132535
You get into a situation where you need to go WOT and the engine is still cold.
>>
>>14132441
No, it's a 2014 Honda Accord Sport, it's only a V4
>>
>>14132548
Well, if going WOT and damaging the engine means saving your life, then why the fuck not?

(yes, I know his particular car does not have a V4 engine, I'm just trolling)
>>
>>14132192
Fuck you I like my car warm when i go into to get groceries, food, etc.

If you have keyless start you can just get out of the car and lock it while its still on
>>
>>14132557
I think I'll idle my engine for a few minutes and eat the cost.
>>
>>14132507
The EU and US passed laws a few years ago requiring all new engines to be able on 87 octane. Engines now detune themselves when running on 87. Economy cars are tuned for 87 from the start so they wont lose HP, most family sedans will lose a few HP but not enough to be noticeable. Engines with aggressive tuning will get fucked in the ass if you use 87.

http://www.autoblog.com/2015/01/05/2015-ford-mustang-ecoboost-loses-big-power-on-87-octane/

I think the new corvette loses between 50-60 HP when running on 87 octane. There was a video about it on youtube but it got taken down...for some strange reason kek.
>>
>>14132570
For the six hundred fifty seven thousand two hundred and thirty eighth time, the OP's concern was why his fuel economy sucks in the winter.

>>14132578
learn2defensivedriving

>>14132579
So how does that work, exactly? Does the engine just change maps as soon as it detects excessive knocking?
>>
>>14132579
Turbo car loses power on 87, BIG FUCKING SURPRISE.
>>
>>14132584
>Defensive driving

Yeah fuck that, I do this thing called offensive driving.
>>
>>14132535
Show me dyno charts where stock tuned cars get more power using high octane.
>>
>>14132584
>So how does that work, exactly? Does the engine just change maps as soon as it detects excessive knocking?
New engines have anti knock sensors so they dont (shouldnt) knock. My guess it has to do with many expensive sensors and algorithms.

>>
>>14131974
A drop in economy is normal during winter but 14 mpg in a modern Accord? What the fuck are you doing?
>>
>>14132605
I don't understand why you're asking about something unrelated now. Yes, certain high performance cars are made for high octane fuel but are tuned down when you use lower octane fuel as >>14132579 said. But you were talking about using a HIGHER octane fuel than is required. In your average commuter car, there will be practically no benefit. Maybe a very slight increase in economy, but the economy will absolutely not decrease.

Higher octane fuel prevents predetonation (knocking), which is where the fuel starts to combust before the spark plug ignites it, which is obviously a bad thing. When you use 87 octane in a car that requires 87 octane, there will be very little or no knocking. When you use 93 octane in that car, there will still be no knocking, but the fuel costs a lot more. Once the fuel is compressed all the way and ignited, it all burns practically the same way.
>>
>>14132636
sick front wheel burnouts on a cold engine, brah
>>
>>14132650
All it does is adjust to keep running, using an octane other than what the car is tuned for has no benefit or is worse.
>>
>>14132695
So, you're just repeating what I said? I can't tell if you're arguing with me or not.
