OP here. Just tested the car, it had a rattle in the engine and an oil leak on the ground as I drove off. The paint work looked a bit shabby and home-done, too. I am thinking they are asking too much ($3,100 AUD).

Fuck yes. Engine probably has bad rings and a blown turbo seal, but that's worth. Wouldn't cost too much to get it back on the road if it's just the fuel pump though.

30X/ MX3 is good. Hard to find one with low K's but being a mazda its generally reliable. I had a '98 323. Was pretty decent. The 323 will have more parts available, both 1st and 3rd party. You're going to have a hard time finding a 323 in good condition as they're usually owned by mums and grandma's who don't care for it. The v6's are also extremely hard to find with low k's and not in automatic.

MX3 look better ascetically imo.

Although, 90% of the F2Ts I've seen in the last year have had both of those problems. So I doubt it would be a far cry from what I said.
