I'm a britbong looking for a decent 'hot hatch' and the two best options seem to be an Astra GTC (1.6 180bhp) or a VW Scirroco (2.0 210bhp).

Anyone got any experience with either? Which should I go for? The Astra is cheaper but the VW drives better.
>>
>>14120803
You considered the Megane RS265? Also, why not the full Astra VXR?
>>
>>14120803

both are shit and chav tier

Look for something else.
>>
>>14120841

I've thought about the RS, but it's a bit basic inside for me - plus I don't trust the French.

And the Astra VxR is out of my price range - decent used one is about £15k.
>>
>>14120848

Care to offer any suggestions? I've been searching a lot recently and can't find anything else that ticks all the boxes.
>>
>>14120859

Megane or Clio if you're willing to drop a notch on the segment
Focus
1 series
Minis (compressor, non turbos)

Not trusting the French is a retard argument. Cars nowadays are made to the same standards and it's just a matter of pure chance it works alright or if it gives you problems.

Plus, no one beats the French in hot hatches.

Opel is shit by default, any vag car has the "status" tax and underdelivers. You could however consider the GTI since it's a tad better than the Scirroco, albeit they're the same car underneath, as said, the Scirroco is chav tier.
>>
>>14120873

It seems chav tier is a matter of perspective. I'd say a GTi is pretty basic looking and chav tier (despite the newer ones driving brilliantly).

I have considered a 1 series coupe, they look pretty sweet.
>>
>>14120803
Megane III RS
Leon Cupra
Focus ST
BMW 130i
>>
>>14120889

Not really, but tomato, tomato. Scirrocos will only deserve any proper appreciation after they go under the "every dick and meek can buy one" threshold and bounce back up. GTIs on the other hand, already have pedigree IF you don't murder them.
>>
>>14120894

I had a 1P Cupra.

It's not a bad car by any means, but I wouldn't buy another (or any other VAG product for that matter). I guess that says a lot.

BMW needs a proper LSD. Focus is the weakest. Personally I would go for the Megane.
>>
Volvo C30 T5.
>>
>>14120894

The leon cupra 280bhp interested me - though seemed a bit pricey and it looks pretty run of the mill.

I looked at the focus ST, but the old ones look like shit, and a modern one is at least £20k.
>>
what about the impreza
>>
>>14120855
>doesn't trust the French, presumably due to reliability concerns

I have a Scirocco, its bretty good
>>
>>14120977

Also I have previously owned a Focus ST and 1 Series. I have previously driven a Megane RS and a Subara WRX PPP S.

If interior etc is a concern then its Scirocco or 1 Series anyday. I actually sold the ST after like 3 months because it was so badly made. The Megane is a joke in construction.
>>
>>14120803
Focus ST or RS if you can afford it. Or a Fiesta equivalent if you fit in one, because they're like go-karts.

Astras tend to be pigs at low speeds. Plenty of power, but sluggish in the turns.
VW is shit. Premium price, shit quality.
Never buy a French car. Ever.
And a BMW is pigfat no matter what you get, because RWD.
That leaves you with Ford. The Focus is going to be a better car all-around, and hot-hatch mods will make it even better.
>>
Get an EP3 Civic for 4k, put another 6 into tuning it to 300bhp with a used JSRC kit, KPRO and map, and essential handling mods (FRSU and LSD) and you will spank most every hot hatch on the road in the straights and the twisties.
>>
>>14120973

The French thing was a joke.

But I still don't trust cars made by cheese-eating surrender monkeys.

>>
>>14121005

That's the problem with Ford - I'm 6'2 so I'd look stupid in a fiesta.

The modern focus ST is decent, but way too expensive - and the old 2.5L run like shit.

Actually the old 2.5 is wonderful. If I could have that engine in the Roc I would anyday. Its the rest of the package that lets it down.
>>
>>14121052

Really? I read that it swallowed fuel horribly for a start.

Plus the old ST looks like the slightly awkward cousin of a standard focus.

Oh man it drank fuel like no tomorrow, but who cares about shit like that? I just tried to keep it above 20mpg and it was all good.

The looks were one thing that didnt bother me. I really quite liked looking like the average pleb in a 'sport' trim Focus till I left them in the fucking weeds. Mine was modified to a touch under 300bhp before it went.
>>
>>14121005
you're talking shit FA.m
the ST is the weakest of the current euro hot hatches and an RS is over OP's budget
>>
>>14121052
>nose heavier than a Jew's
>loose rear end
>completely numb acceleration because everything is so fucking heavy
>Mustang-tier lolcantturn
Did they deliberately fuck up the ST so the RS would be considered a comparative masterpiece?
>>
>>14121081

Man I think you have the car wrong. Its not supposed to be a Ferrari. Its supposed to drive like a fucking insane factory riced Focus. It kicks its arse out when you lift, like a 205GTI, and steering under power just doesnt happen because its torque steer city.

But in return you get an absolute peach of an engine. And lets be honest, unless you are a little scardey bitch the tail swinging out is fun as fuck. Remember that new the ST cost sweet FA.
>>
>>14120803
>britbong looking for a decent hot hatch
what is it with bongs and faggy hot hatches
>>
>>14121103

Bongland has small roads which require smaller cars to fit on them properly.

Plus girls like a decent looking hatch with a bit of speed.
>>
>>14121090
I never said it was meant to be a Ferrari.
The Focus ST was a shit car whose shortcomings could not be overcome by the wonderful B525's sound. A engine can only go so far to make up for a car's shortcomings.
>>
>>14121116

Id disagree, but then I did sell mine because it was so shittily built. I think on its day the engine won it for me and it was a pretty fun package overall.

I dont think Ill ever have another Ford though.
>>
>>14120803
Get an absolutely mint super low miles clio 182 for like 4k
>>
>>14121123
I had mine for about 8 weeks.

The initial surge of power and the 5-pot noise sealed the deal for me, and the first couple of weeks were bliss. But once I started living with it, I reealised what a loathsome car it is.

I guess in many ways car ownership is a lot like marriage.
>>
>>14121163

I had mine for about 3 months. I wonder if this is average lifespan for ST ownership heh
>>
>>14121171
It really is. STs used to be popular in my ends but after about 3-6 months I'd notice the same guy driving a different car.

There's one orange prefacelift ST here now, and the owner has whacked a custom straight-through exhaust, which he drives around at 2am keeping it in mostly in first or second gear for maximum farts.
>>
>>14121188

My biggest regret with mine was changing the exhaust. I had to do it to utilise the rest of the modifications but in hindsight it was a mistake. There is a guy near me who builds ST's for rallying and track racing and he had a spare race spec 3" decatted system which I snapped up. It was funny as fuck popping and banging in tunnels and on the way to work, less funny trying to park up at 2am at my suburban house.
>>
>>14121005
>Not wanting RWD?
>>
>>14121043
>That's the problem with Ford - I'm 6'2 so I'd look stupid in a fiesta.
No you wouldnt, stop making up the worst excuses possible
>>
>>14121212

I don't even want the fiesta ST, i just don't like the looks of it.
>>
>>14121200
Driving from Sussex to Tees Valley with a loud exhaust is a fucking pain in the arse. Never again.
>>
The Astra is totally fucking shit and not an actual hot hatch in any sense of the word, and when you tell people you have a hot hatch Astra and they ask if it's the VXR, you'll have to explain that it's just a GTC.

Save your money and buy either a Clio 182 Trophy or a 172 Cup. Both will embarrass the Astra and the Scirocco in a straight line and on the twisty stuff.

If you're unable to stop being a stupid fuck about french cars, then the Golf GTI is better than the scirocco, but still not as good as the Clio's. BMW 130i M Sport is also worth a look.
>>
>>14121043
>I'm 6'2 so I'd look stupid in a fiesta.

You'd feel pretty stupid, and get back pains. It's a car for girls and manlets, so let's assume you're going for a 'large hatchback', like the Focus and Astra.

If it's expensive, go for a used one. The new shape goes back to mid-2011, and I'm pretty sure the new STs do. And the newer engine is the same ecoboost as from the Mustang, just minus turbos.

>>14121078
Maybe weakest on paper, but Ford ergonomics. Doesn't matter if you go 0-60 half a second faster if you're uncomfortable doing it, or can't reach the heated screen controls from the gearstick easily.

>>14121103
What is it with Americans and lolcantturn overpowered underperforming rustbucket muscle cars?
Hot hatches are good for twisty roads and high fuel prices.
