Make sure you get to start it cold. See how well it starts first time. Take it up to highway speeds if you can and make sure 5th doesn't shit the bed. If you can get it to a garage and on a ramp having a look underneath is a good idea.
Other than that make sure all the electrics work fine and replace that awful looking red shift boot.

I also had an '86 MR2 for my first car, though mine's white. Snap oversteer is a meme (it's usually lift off oversteer that gets people) but I've encountered neither.
Not sure what you've learnt to drive in but remember it's very basic with no TC or ABS.

If you don't lack common sense then go for it. Mid-rear cars aren't exactly beginner friendly but MR2 is so weak you won't lose control unless you are a dumbass who don't know his own limits.

As for alternatives there is always a miata. Just as slow and just as fun but easier to work on.

You don't crash trying to accelerate quickly, you crash trying to push your car on windy roads or by driving in bad conditions. If you plan on pushing it (which I assume you are since you're looking at an AW11 instead of a standard shitbox) and you've never driven aggressively before, yes, it is dangerous. I doubt that's going to stop you, though, so just learn the quirks of the car before you try anything dumb, and when you do, start doing dumb things at a reasonable pace, don't just jump straight into it.

I own a a 90 Accord, and a AW11. and have drive an EG.

I can CONFIRM that a 2800 pigfat accord is faster and handles better, not to mention a EG is leagues ahead of a AW11.

The AW11 is a great car. It's more fun to drive, requires way more technique and skill to drive properly. The 4AGE is very rev happy, and loves to go up and down all day. Slamming through the gears is everything you could want.

For feels, get an AW11. For speed get a Civic.

In comparison to a Civic, the AW11 feels.... legacy. It feels barbaric. It doesn't have a lot of horse power, but you do have to control it. If you get one you will have to conquer the machine.

The civic is the opposite, it feels refined in comparison, it's very forgiving, understeer is always predictable, and can be avoided. But nonetheless, it is faster.

It is dangerous. I'm 20 and have driven a myriad of cars. I went from a FF car which seemed to enjoy understeer to an AW11. The first day it rained I spun out at a corner I never thought I could spinout at and I didn't lift or brake, the back end just lost grip and rotated. I'm very lucky the corner exited to an open field and there was no traffic.
This car will kill you if you're an inexperienced driver and push the limits of the car, which you will.
If you do get it at least take it to a parking lot in the rain and get it to spin out a shit ton of times so you know how it feels and you know how to correct it.
