Any reason not to purchase a 2005 Honda Civic Ex manual?

>VTEC yo
>127 HP? Lolwut
>30+ mpg

Is the VTEC engine really slow due to such a low HP or does the magic of VTEC make it pretty snappy? I'm not looking to race but I don't want to snails pace either.
>>
>>14105852
You dont buy a honda to go fast, with the exception of a type R
However like most hondas you can swap in a different engine, dump a few grand into it and make 300 to the front wheels, which is the only place the power should ever be desu
>>
>>14105863
I saw a 2001 with a 0-60 of 7 that said stock.

Faster than my current gen.

Still snail pace huh?
>>
>>14105888
They're all slow
The older you go the lighter they get so obv, if you're looking to build a honda you go with older platforms
>>
You'd be better off getting a Si model, v6 accord, cobalt ss, Grand Prix gtp if you want speed

Worse gas mileage

OP here
Any car that can compare but is faster? I thought vtec meant it would go pretty fast if I needed.
>>
>>14106252
Read about vtec on wikipedia
It's not a magic go fast button.
>>
I have an 8th gen lx sedan. It's not fast or sporty by any means but it's not as boring as many other commuters I've been in. There's enough power to work with, but vtec on the sohc is between 1.5 and 4k if I remember right. There's none of that "kick" shit on it. The cam profile is basically just for mpg. Steering feel is pretty alright compared to my ae86 and I've had fun on canyon roads without the guilt of beating on a 30 year old car. Mainly though, it's reliable as shit and you can get nearly 40 mpg out of it.

If I had the option, I would have got the Si though.
>>
>>14106252

No, VTEC isn't as special as it once was. It's just Honda's version of variable valve timing. Most automotive manufacturers have some sort of variable vale timing (VVT) now. If you're wanting something with a bit of pep, but you want to keep it to a small japanese car, get something with a turbo. I think the MR2 is a good choice.

Just don't, own two of them and terrible cars. Go back to the fifth and sixth generation of the civic. One has a blown hg and I'm pretty sure the second is on its way there
>>
>>14106270
Isn't MR2 snap oversteer gonna kill me or is that the meme.

If I can find Si for 6k I'd buy one but does it work with regular civic aftermarket or does it have different requirements.
>>
>>14106252
Unless that Wojak weighs 675lbs then I'm pretty sure the weights are heavier.
>>
>>14105852
I had one, and so did my parents.

Its a perfect car. I wish I repaired mine, instead of selling it.

I got 32mpg nor matter what I did. solid gas mileage.

Neuspeed strut bars help out a TON.
a good magnaflow exhaust and headers help
aluminum crank pulley helps

just dont buy cheap ebay shit. you can improve their performance a bit, but dont bother making it fast.

Had mine go to 187k miles with no serious issues
>>
>>14105852
VTEC just makes small engines reasonably powerful. By that I mean powerful enough to get out of its own way. They prioritized mileage on the non-Si cars. It's not the same level VTEC that Type R (or some Si) engines get.

If you're not in a rust-prone area and don't need great mileage, I'd look for a Mazda3 2.3L instead.
>>
>>14105863
>you dont buy a honda to go fast
fuck you dude
>>
>>14105852
Nope, if a solid Daily driver is what you are after then stop right there. you found it.
>>
>>14106396
South with no snow ever.

I'll look into the Mazda. Isn't the type r super expensive? I was looking at the rsx type s but it's power va mileage vs interior just didn't add up.

I don't want a race car but I don't want to hit the highway with no push power

127hp is plenty for such a small car. don't worry about it not being enough. Also. the fact that it is a manual will help it feel faster than it really is.

127. What is this. A Kia Rio?

Not even the 160hp EP3 broke into the 7s. That was highly optimistic.

Rather just buy a stock engine that's zippy.

>>14106592

>>
A reliable, inexpensive to maintain econobox. It's a slow car the modern vtec is just for fas mileage. You will never feel it engage.
>>
>>14106448
The Type R was never sold in the US.

The RSX Type S has a similar engine as the Civic Type R of the same era. It's a great car, but only if you drive it like a race car - that's true of every naturally aspirated fast VTEC engine. It sounds like that isn't for you.

You want something with a larger engine or a turbo. Besides the Mazda3, the Sentra SE-R might work. Spec-V just means it's a manual transmission SE-R. The GTI is great too, if you don't need reliability.
>>
>>14106538

Well I mean the EM2 is a fun car but it has no power. Cornering is great in it but you'll know the engine ain't up to the task. It sounds great though.
>>
>>14106614
Faster than a 94 ranger?
4.0L v6 manual

I just want to get something with better gas mileage and speed. Shouldn't be hard.

This. My old mini had 120-something HP and it had no problem merging, overtaking, or cruising at 100MPH. It did get a little gutless over 80MPH or so, but with a stick you can always get the most out of the engine. Just don't be afraid to rev the shit out of it or drop a few gears when you need power.

I regrets trading it in a little.
>>
>>14106620

What the fuck do I do with an FF car that is 3,000 pounds and a wheelbase of 101.8 inches
>>
>>14106630
No, I beat EX civics in my 5spd Explorer Sport.
>>
>>14106302

>MR2 Snap oversteer.

It's just a meme, you'd honestly rather have oversteer than understeer.

>SI, different parts.

The only difference between a Civic SI and a non-Si counter part are some minor suspension changes and the engine. Typically your standard Civic will have a 1.4-1.8l Engine and the Si will have 2.4L~ This is what gives it alittle more power.

You could take an Si and bolt on a turbo and get a car with a decent bit of acceleration behind it, but without a turbo it's just a slightly less boring civic.
>>
>>14106821
A Si in the U.S. is equivalent to a Si-R in other countries friend.
>>
>>14106735
Then what 5k car with decent mileage and reliability can beat my 4 v6 ranger in acceleration
>>
because you can get a rsx with nearly double the horsepower and a liftback
>>
>>14106728
>"hurr durr guys I want a basemodel civic because vtak makes it fast"
>"omg this SHO is stupid because it weighs this much even though it's much faster and double the horsepower of a civic"
>>
>>14106682
The older ones (Mk IV and earlier) are full of electrical issues. The newer ones only have engine issues.

>>14106630
Most compacts with a 2.3L+ or turbocharged engine should be able to do that. A few 2.0L models can do it too.

>>14106839
Sort of, not really. The Canadian Si-R was basically a USDM Si. Both were one level below the JDM Si-R.

Corolla xrs. Those ran pretty good and with some minor mods could get to 180-190hp

My 2001 ex civic gets around that. Id say yes its probably accurate because of the weight mostly.

Been seeing a couple of threads about EM2s lately. They're really nice cars and the interior is pretty cozy. Great MPGs and makes for decent "spirited" driving despite the lack of power.

You can make it fast, but you're gonna have to pay at least 5k~. Much better options out there for performance, but it's reliable as hell and it's got personality.
>>
>>14109163
>EM2
>Paper weight engine

Are we talking about the 99-00 Civic Si? I had one, the engine is far from a paperweight, car got over 30mpg, you had to rev the shit out of it but that roar when VTEC changes the cam phase on the B16A2 was awesome for a 4 banger, also the chassis code is EM1, study up you stupid fucks
>>
>>14109251
EM2 is the '01-'05 Civic coupe, the car in the OP. You stupid fuck.
>>
>>14109542

>>
>>14106521

>broke into

>seven second 0-60

usually when someone says "broke into 7s" they're referring to cars that can stand on their back wheels
>>
>>14106504
It's probably going to weight 300 lbs less than a late model Kia Rio, which should be enough to offset all that weight you're bringing to the thread.
>>
>>14110212
EP3s are faster than EM2s, whoever said they aren't is stupid.

>>14110454
Except when someone is implicitly discussing 0-60 times.
>>
>>14105852
Get a 6mt Acura TL
It looks better, way more space, 270 hp and 0-60 can get as low as 5.5 if you dont care about your clutch
>>
>>14109251
No this is 01-05 engine anon.
>>14110212
Hatch back is interesting you are right though that si doesn't have the weight distribution issue of the coupe si. It is pretty lightweight already though.

Variable valve LIFT NOT TIMING YOU FUCKO
>>
There extremely slow. The engine is a D17 and it does not respond well to mods or even boost. The best thing people do to that chassis is do a K20/K24 swap. Surprisingly the car is actually lighter than a DC integra.

They're good cars but not even remotely "peppy". Even an EP3 would be a lot quicker and those are very slow as well.
>>
>>14111338
The north American k20a3 is slow, my Ep3 is anything but, k24/k20 swap

>Si of em2
You mean EP3? There was no EM2 Si in the U.S.

>>14107934
No, the original implementation of VTEC in the B-series engines was to have a radical cam grind for top end power and the smaller lobes were for streetability. TODA makes what are called VTEC killers which eliminate the economy lobe activity. VTEC was solely to retain low RPM driveability and have the car idle decently.
