True, it actually exist a really long time ago if you want to get into prototypes and so forth (kind of like fuel injection being as old as the internal combustion engine itself - sometimes things just take a while to catch on or for the technology to catch up with the idea). Actually similar ideas were used outside of the automotive industry comparatively in ancient mills. They were just the first to really use it widely for practical applications in mass production vehicles. Essentially VTEC was marketed phenomenally well. I'm guessing you haven't driven an actually fast racing kart. Shifter kart power/weight ratios reach almost F1 car levels if I remember correctly. There is no ABS, no TCS, no power steering, an insanely quick steering rack, and literally zero suspension. The engine is screaming in your ear right next to you, thr gas tank is between your legs and usually leaking a bit onto your right leg, and the radiator hoses heat is right against your back. The vibration on some can be tooth-chattering as well, not to mention the cornering forces can literally bruise your ribs. Not to mention your ass is literally an inch off the ground as you're going like 80+mph on longer straights.
